If your Social Security number (SSN) or other personal data was exposed, first find out exactly what information was involved and whether there are signs it has been misused. Secure any affected accounts, check your credit reports, and place a free credit freeze or fraud alert if appropriate. If you find actual identity theft, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan.
A breach notice alone does not prove someone has used your information. Keep the notice, read what the company says was exposed, and check whether it offers free credit monitoring. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends using that offer when one is available, but monitoring does not replace securing accounts or checking your reports.

Start by identifying what was exposed
Keep the breach notice and note which details were involved: an SSN, account credentials, payment information, or other personal data. Check the notice for the company’s recommended steps, a fraud or security contact, and any free monitoring offer. Use contact details from the notice or the company’s trusted website—not an unexpected message or caller claiming to help.

The FTC lists unexplained bank withdrawals, unfamiliar credit accounts or charges, collection notices for debts you do not recognize, unexpected medical bills, and IRS notices about duplicate tax returns or unknown employment income as possible warning signs. An exposure without these signs still warrants care, but it is not proof of identity theft.

A credit freeze and a fraud alert are different tools. A freeze restricts access to your credit report; an alert asks businesses to take steps to verify identity before issuing credit. Neither is a universal lock on every use of an SSN, such as tax filing, medical billing, or employment verification.
| Option | What it does | Duration and setup | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Limits access to your credit report and can make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name. | Free. Request it separately from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus. It remains until you lift or remove it. | You may need to lift it when applying for credit or a service that checks your credit. A freeze is not the same as a fraud alert. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before issuing credit. | Free and lasts one year. Contact one nationwide bureau; it must notify the other two. | It does not block access to your credit report. |
| Extended fraud alert | According to the FTC, potential creditors must contact you before issuing credit. | Free and lasts seven years. You need an FTC Identity Theft Report. | It is intended for identity theft victims and requires documentation. |
For a freeze, contact each bureau directly using its official freeze process. For an initial fraud alert, contact any one of the three nationwide bureaus. The FTC explains the rights and procedures for freezes and fraud alerts.

Take the steps that match the kind of misuse
Tax-related identity theft
Respond to IRS notices and follow their instructions. Filing your tax return early can reduce the chance that an identity thief files first. If the issue is not resolved, IdentityTheft.gov’s tax recovery guidance covers Form 14039 and specialized IRS assistance.
Employment misuse
Review your Social Security work history and contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) about errors. The FTC recovery guidance also points to E-Verify’s myE-Verify option to lock an SSN for employment verification. That is a targeted employment measure, not a general lock on all uses of an SSN.

- Personal Information Protection: there are 4 pieces of address blocker roller stamps in 2 different sizes, and 5 pieces of 1.5 ml inks, a total of 9 pieces. Mainly applied to hide information such as social security numbers, bank statements, billing addresses, shipping addresses, tax documents and so on, protecting your personal information
- Re Inking Unlimitedly: the information blocker stamp can cover information of the length about 100 meters. And each security stamper roller has an oil hole, so you don't have to worry about you having to throw away the roller stamps when the ink runs out. They can be refilled with oil for repeated use, saving time and energy
- Cover Fast: our identity protection rollers come in 2 different sizes, and you can choose different sizes according to different areas of information to cover large amounts of private information in a fast and clean way, avoiding identity theft and rejecting privacy disclosure harassment
- Easy to Use: just remove the lid on the ID stamp blocker roller and open it, and then gently slide it on the place where the information needs to be covered. It is suitable for most ordinary paper with black words, and can protect your personal privacy in time
- Save Time and Energy: compared with the shredder, the personal confidential stamp has a small size, easy to carry, can be applied anytime and anywhere. Compared to the marker, it covers a larger area and can be quickly covered with a single swipe. There is no need to worry about whether you can not protect your privacy in time
A replacement SSN is generally not available just because the number was exposed; the recovery guidance says there must generally be evidence of misuse. A new number may not resolve every problem because government and business records can remain linked to the old one.
Misuse involving a child
If a child’s information was used, contact the business, request that the account be closed, and ask for written confirmation. You can also ask for a manual search for a credit file. A parent or guardian can request a credit freeze for a minor by following each bureau’s process.

If the problem involves benefits or another government record, contact the agency responsible and follow its identity-theft instructions. A credit freeze addresses access to credit reports; it does not settle issues in agency records.
