Use MKVToolNix to inspect an MKV, choose the audio track or tracks you want to keep, and remux the file. Track selection removes unwanted audio streams; it does not convert the file to YouTube’s recommended upload format or re-encode its audio or video. Uploads and live streams also use different YouTube guidance, so choose the workflow that matches your destination.
Choose the audio track before removing anything
First identify which stream contains the language, commentary, or mix you need. Track IDs are specific to the file and to the tool’s input; do not assume that a media player’s displayed track number is the same ID used by mkvmerge. MKVToolNix documents track identification and selection in its mkvmerge manual. The online manual can change, so check the documentation bundled with your installed version if its options differ.

- Make a working copy of the source MKV so you can return to the original if you select the wrong stream.
- Inspect the file in MKVToolNix GUI, or run
mkvmerge --identify input.mkv. For machine-readable identification, usemkvmerge -J input.mkv. Note the IDs and descriptions of the audio tracks. - Decide which tracks to retain. Keep any alternate language, commentary, or audio mix required by your intended audience; remove only streams you have confirmed are unnecessary.
- Note any subtitles, chapters, attachments, or other streams that must also be preserved. Audio selection alone does not express whether you want to keep or discard those other elements.
Remove tracks with MKVToolNix GUI
- Open MKVToolNix GUI and add the source MKV to the multiplexer.
- In the track list, identify the audio streams using their displayed language and other available details. Uncheck each audio track you do not want in the output.
- Review the non-audio tracks and leave selected the subtitles, chapters, attachments, and video you need.
- Choose a new output filename, then start multiplexing.
- Open or identify the output file and confirm that it contains the intended audio track and the non-audio streams you chose to keep.
Remove tracks with the command line
After identifying the IDs in your input, pass the IDs of the audio tracks to retain with --audio-tracks. For example, if the IDs you intend to keep are 1 and 3:

Replace those example IDs with the IDs reported for your file. The mkvmerge manual documents the selection syntax and notes that options affecting an input must appear before that input filename. By default, mkvmerge copies all audio tracks; this option selects which ones to copy. It remuxes the selected streams rather than re-encoding them. Consult the manual for your installed version if the syntax or behavior differs.
Check the result before upload or broadcast
- Re-open the output or identify its streams to make sure the unwanted audio is gone and the intended track remains.
- Listen near the beginning and at a later point. Confirm you kept the correct language or mix and that the sound stays synchronized.
- Keep the original if it may be useful as an archive or if you need to revise the selection.
These are validation steps to perform on your file; removing tracks does not itself establish that the result is suitable for every upload or live-stream workflow.

For a normal YouTube upload, check the container and codec separately
Track removal does not turn an MKV into an MP4 or change its codecs. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings recommend the MP4 container and list AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio for audio. The page recommends 48 kHz audio; its listed audio bitrates are 128 kbps for mono, 384 kbps for stereo, and 512 kbps for 5.1. These are upload recommendations, not track-selection instructions or generic live-stream requirements.
If the retained streams and container do not match your upload needs, use an export or conversion workflow that supports the required container and codecs. MKVToolNix remuxing selects and packages streams; it does not re-encode them. OBS describes MKV as its default recording container and says it is resilient if recording is interrupted, though it may need remuxing for editing software. Its recording output guide also discusses fragmented MP4/MOV for uses such as uploads to platforms including YouTube. The guide is dated 2023-03-26; check current software and platform guidance before choosing a recording or export format.

For a live YouTube stream, use live encoder settings
A live broadcast is a different pipeline from uploading a finished video. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. It says 5.1 surround over those protocols is supported only with AAC. Do not apply the upload page’s container or bitrate recommendations as though they were universal live requirements; configure the encoder and protocol you are actually using.
