For a standard 16:9 YouTube video, downscale 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) to 1920 × 1080, keep the source frame rate, and export an SDR file using YouTube’s recommended upload settings. If you mean a continuous YouTube Live broadcast rather than a playlist of uploaded videos, use the separate live-ingest guidance; the two workflows have different settings.
First decide what “playlist stream” means
A YouTube playlist normally plays individual videos that have already been uploaded. In that case, export each video at the resolution you want, upload it, and arrange the entries in the playlist. Follow YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

If you mean a continuous real-time YouTube Live broadcast, your encoder sends a live feed to YouTube, which transcodes it into viewer formats. Use YouTube’s separate live encoder settings rather than treating upload bitrates as live-ingest requirements. YouTube says low-latency improvement is unavailable for 4K live streams.

For 16:9 footage, set the output to 1920 × 1080. YouTube defines 4K UHD as 3840 × 2160. Downscaling reduces the pixel dimensions; it cannot restore detail that was not captured in the source.

Keep the source aspect ratio. YouTube’s player adapts to a video’s dimensions and format, so a source that is not 16:9 does not have to be stretched into a 16:9 frame. Fitting the whole image may leave unused space; cropping fills more of the frame but cuts off edges. Those are creative choices. YouTube advises against baking padding or black bars into the file because they can interfere with dynamic player adaptation. See its guidance on video aspect ratio and resolution.
Export an SDR 1080p upload
- Open the original in a video editor. YouTube’s 4K workflow guide gives Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro as examples; none is required. If your editor struggles with 4K, use a 1080p or 720p proxy while editing, then ensure the final export uses the original media at 1080p. YouTube explains that proxy edits can be synced to the 4K source for export. See its 4K video workflow guide and proxy-editing guidance.
- Set the frame size. For 16:9, choose 1920 × 1080. For another aspect ratio, preserve the intended shape rather than forcing 16:9.
- Keep the recorded frame rate. YouTube’s guidance says: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” Choose progressive scan for the export.
- Use the SDR upload format and color settings. YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video and BT.709 color for SDR. Do not apply these SDR settings blindly to HDR footage; YouTube lists separate HDR guidance on its upload-settings page.
- Choose the bitrate for the frame rate. YouTube’s current SDR upload recommendations are 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24, 25, or 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 48, 50, or 60 fps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder, scene, or source needs exactly that bitrate.
- Render, watch the file, then upload it. Check that the picture is not stretched or unintentionally cropped, audio is present, and the file plays through before adding it to the playlist.
HDR sources need a suitable HDR-aware workflow; do not assume that an SDR export recipe preserves HDR color or brightness correctly.

Keep playlist videos separate or join them?
Keep entries separate
If viewers should see distinct playlist entries, export and upload each clip independently, then put them in the intended order in YouTube. This avoids rendering a single long concatenated file and preserves separate titles and entries.

Before joining, check each clip’s dimensions, frame rate, audio streams, codecs, and duration. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join files without re-encoding, but it expects matching streams and time bases; inaccurate duration information can cause gaps or artifacts. If the sources differ and need re-encoding, FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter: “This operation is recommended if you need to re-encode.” See the FFmpeg concatenation FAQ.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
There is no safe universal command for joining unknown clips: the right filter and output settings depend on their actual properties. Normalize mismatched clips and render a consistent output rather than assuming dissimilar files can be concatenated unchanged.

A playlist of uploaded videos and a live encoder feed are different delivery paths. For Live, consult YouTube’s live settings and match your encoder output to its ingest recommendations; the upload bitrate figures above are not live settings. YouTube handles transcoding of a live input into multiple output formats. If the material is prerecorded, decide whether you want ordinary playlist playback or an actual Live event before choosing the workflow.

Common problems and fixes
- The picture looks squashed or stretched: the export dimensions changed the aspect ratio. Re-export with the source ratio preserved; choose fit or crop deliberately instead of stretching.
- The 4K edit stutters: edit with a 1080p or 720p proxy, and verify that the final render is linked or synced to the original media and set to 1080p.
- The joined video has gaps or glitches: inspect stream compatibility and durations. The concat demuxer requires matching streams and time bases; use a re-encoding workflow such as FFmpeg’s concat filter when the clips differ.
- The exported file looks wrong compared with HDR source footage: the SDR settings may not preserve HDR. Use an HDR-aware export workflow and consult YouTube’s separate HDR recommendations.
- A live encoder will not behave as expected with upload settings: upload recommendations apply to pre-rendered files. Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance for a real-time ingest stream.
