If an SVG icon is visible in the browser but missing from an HTML-to-PNG export, first identify how the icon is embedded and which renderer creates the PNG. The export may use a separate resource-loading path that fails on external SVGs, sprites, CSS images, or cross-origin assets. For html2canvas, check its resource errors and CORS behavior; enabling CORS cannot override a server that does not grant permission.
Why a visible SVG can disappear from a PNG
A browser page and an HTML-to-canvas converter do not necessarily render the same way. A browser may display an icon while a separate capture pipeline fails to fetch or use the SVG, one of its dependencies, or a cross-origin resource. The applicable fix depends on the converter, browser, and SVG markup; the html2canvas options below are specific to that library, not universal HTML-to-PNG settings. Its documentation also describes rendering limitations that can affect results: html2canvas documentation.

Identify how the icon is included
Inspect the element in the page and determine which case applies:
- Inline SVG: the
<svg>markup is in the HTML. This is a useful first test because it avoids a separate SVG file request, although renderer compatibility or referenced resources can still matter. - SVG in an image element: an
<img src="…svg">requires the converter to load the SVG as an image. - CSS background: inspect the computed
background-imageURL and whether that asset loads during capture. - External SVG sprite: a
<use>reference to a symbol in another file adds an external resource path that may fail independently.
SVGs used as images have restrictions on loading external resources such as images and stylesheets. Making an SVG self-contained can help isolate that issue; see MDN: SVG as an image and the SVG 2 linking specification.

Diagnose the failure in order
- Record the renderer and environment. Note the HTML-to-PNG library and version, browser, and whether capture runs in the browser or elsewhere. Do not apply
html2canvassettings to another renderer. - Check the browser console and network panel. Look for failed SVG requests, blocked cross-origin requests, missing sprite files, or dependent image and stylesheet errors. Confirm the resource loads before capture begins.
- Reduce the page to one icon. Make a minimal reproduction containing the same icon and capture call. If an inline version works but the external version does not, investigate the resource request and origin before changing rendering settings.
- Try a self-contained SVG. Inline the SVG markup or embed dependencies as data URLs for a diagnostic capture. If that fixes the minimal case, external references are implicated; it does not rule out a separate renderer limitation.
- Test one renderer option at a time. For html2canvas, inspect the resource error callback and test its documented CORS or rendering options as appropriate. Compare the generated PNG in the actual browser and library version.
Fix cross-origin loading without bypassing browser security
If the SVG or an image it uses is hosted on a different origin, the asset server must return suitable CORS permission for the canvas use case. In html2canvas, useCORS defaults to false; setting it to true asks the library to attempt CORS-enabled image loading. It cannot grant permission the remote server has not sent. See the html2canvas configuration and its FAQ.
When you control the asset host, configure the appropriate CORS response there. If you cannot change the remote server, options include serving the asset from the same origin or using an application-side proxy that retrieves it and serves it suitably. A proxy must be implemented and secured by your application; the converter option alone is not a permission bypass. MDN explains that reading a tainted canvas, including during export, raises a SecurityError: Use cross-origin images in a canvas.

Do not treat allowTaint as a way to make a cross-origin canvas readable. Whether a draw is allowed and whether the resulting canvas is origin-clean are separate concerns. The export must use a permitted loading path.

| Option | Documented behavior | When to investigate it |
|---|---|---|
useCORS |
Attempts to load images from a server using CORS; default is false. |
The asset is cross-origin and its server can return suitable CORS headers. |
proxy |
Configures a proxy for loading images. | The asset server cannot be changed and you have a suitable application-side proxy. |
foreignObjectRendering |
Enables the foreign-object rendering path; default is false. |
A minimal reproduction suggests the selected rendering path may be relevant. Validate output in the target browser. |
imageTimeout |
Sets the image loading timeout; default is 15000 ms. | Network evidence suggests a resource is still loading when capture proceeds. |
onError |
Provides a callback for resource errors. | You need to surface failed image or SVG loading while investigating. |
For exact signatures and version-specific behavior, use the html2canvas configuration reference. Increasing a timeout will not repair an inaccessible URL, missing CORS permission, or unsupported SVG dependency.
Choose a remedy based on where it fails
| Remedy | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Inline SVG or make dependencies self-contained | You want to test whether an external reference is the cause. | May require markup or build changes and does not guarantee compatibility with every renderer. |
| Enable CORS-aware loading and configure the asset server | The resource is cross-origin and you control its response headers. | The server must grant permission; the client setting cannot supply it. |
| Serve the asset locally or through a same-origin proxy | You cannot configure the remote server but can arrange a permitted application-side asset path. | Requires application and proxy setup. |
| Change renderer configuration or rendering path | Resources load, but a minimal test still points to renderer behavior. | Options vary by library and browser; verify the output in the environment that matters. |
Troubleshoot common symptoms
- The icon appears in the page but not in the export: inspect the capture tool’s network and console errors, then test the icon inline. Browser visibility alone does not establish that the converter can load or render it.
- The SVG request fails with a cross-origin error: configure suitable CORS headers on the asset server, or arrange a same-origin asset path. In html2canvas, test
useCORS: trueonly when the server permits the request. - The SVG loads, but its internal image or stylesheet is missing: inspect the SVG’s dependencies. SVG image contexts restrict external resource loading; try a self-contained version or data URLs as a diagnostic.
- The export throws
SecurityError: the canvas is tainted. Do not rely on an option as a security bypass; make the resource load through a permitted CORS or same-origin path. - Only html2canvas examples fail: use its
onErrorcallback and verify each option against the installed version. Its behavior does not describe another renderer. - No minimal test isolates the problem: share the converter and version, browser, capture code, a minimal reproduction, and whether the icon is inline, an image, a background, or an external sprite reference.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot rather than an in-app canvas export, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. Its browser capture can remove known cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with the outcome reported in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
cURL example, targeting a page with an SVG icon:

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting useCORS: true always fix missing SVG icons in html2canvas?
No. It only attempts CORS-enabled loading; the asset server still has to permit the request.
Will converting an external SVG to a data URL guarantee it renders?
No. It helps test whether external dependencies are the issue, but does not eliminate renderer-specific SVG limitations.
