To capture a website as it appears in iPhone Safari through Selenium Grid, route a WebDriver session from Grid 4 to an Appium server configured for iOS. Appium drives Safari on either a simulator or a connected iPhone; after the page reaches the state you want, call the WebDriver screenshot API. Selenium’s Safari documentation directs iOS Safari automation to Appium.
This setup is for testing or capturing Safari on an iOS device. A simulator can be enough for layout checks; use real hardware when the behavior you need to inspect depends on a physical iPhone. The screenshot command captures the current viewport in a web context, not necessarily the entire page.

How the Grid-to-iPhone capture flow works
- Prepare a Mac and an iPhone or iOS simulator for Safari WebDriver automation.
- Start Appium with the iOS driver and make that Appium server reachable from Selenium Grid 4.
- Configure Grid’s relay to forward the session request to Appium.
- Request a Safari session with capabilities that match the available iOS device or simulator.
- Navigate to the target URL, wait for the page state you need, and save the WebDriver screenshot.
Grid routes the session request; Appium and its iOS driver perform the device automation. A Grid endpoint alone does not provide an iPhone or make Safari available: the Appium endpoint and a usable iOS device or simulator must be configured first.
Choose a real iPhone or an iOS simulator
Use a simulator for many layout checks
Appium supports Mobile Safari automation on simulated iOS devices. A simulator can be suitable when you need to check a viewport, responsive layout, or a repeatable web-page state without depending on a particular physical handset. Xcode is required for iOS simulators.

Use real hardware when hardware behavior matters
Choose a connected iPhone when the test depends on actual device behavior. Apple’s documented real-device Safari WebDriver setup uses a connected Mac. Do not assume every workflow requires buying an iPhone: Appium also supports simulators, and the right choice depends on what the test is meant to establish.
Enable iOS Safari automation
For Apple’s documented iOS and iPadOS WebDriver setup, enable the relevant Safari options on the device and enable WebDriver on the Mac. Menu wording and availability can vary with iOS, macOS, and Xcode versions, so check Apple’s current instructions for the versions installed in your environment.
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Safari > Advanced and enable Web Inspector and Remote Automation.
- Connect the device to the Mac used to automate it and complete any device trust or pairing prompts.
- Enable WebDriver on the Mac as described in Apple’s Safari WebDriver setup documentation.
- For a simulator, install and select a compatible iOS simulator through Xcode instead of connecting a physical device.
- Install Appium and its iOS driver, then confirm the Appium server can see the intended device or simulator before routing sessions through Grid.
Connect Appium to Selenium Grid 4
Appium’s Grid guide describes using Grid 4’s relay feature to proxy WebDriver requests to an Appium server. Configure Grid with the Appium endpoint and the routing details required by the Grid and Appium versions you run; the precise configuration is version-dependent, so use the current Appium Grid relay documentation rather than copying an unversioned snippet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake the Appium host address routable from the Grid process. If Grid and Appium run on different machines or containers, localhost and 127.0.0.1 refer to the Grid host itself, not the Appium host. Use a hostname or IP address that Grid can reach, and check firewall rules and port exposure between the hosts.

Before debugging a screenshot script, verify that a session request sent through the Grid endpoint is actually relayed to Appium and that the requested device is available. This separates routing problems from page-loading or screenshot problems.
Request a Safari session and save a screenshot
The example below uses Python Selenium’s remote WebDriver interface. It assumes Appium, the iOS driver, the device or simulator, and Grid’s Appium relay are already configured. Capability names and relay matching must agree with the Appium and Grid versions in use; update the device name and Grid URL for your environment.
from pathlib import Path
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
GRID_URL = "http://localhost:4444"
TARGET_URL = "https://example.com"
options = webdriver.SafariOptions()
options.set_capability("platformName", "iOS")
options.set_capability("browserName", "Safari")
options.set_capability("appium:automationName", "XCUITest")
options.set_capability("appium:deviceName", "iPhone Simulator")
# For a simulator, specify the installed iOS version if required by your setup:
# options.set_capability("appium:platformVersion", "YOUR_IOS_VERSION")
driver = webdriver.Remote(command_executor=GRID_URL, options=options)
try:
driver.get(TARGET_URL)
WebDriverWait(driver, 30).until(
lambda d: d.execute_script("return document.readyState") == "complete"
)
# Add an application-specific wait here if the content appears after load.
Path("iphone-safari.png").write_bytes(driver.get_screenshot_as_png())
finally:
driver.quit()
Remove the accidental leading space before driver = webdriver.Remote if copying from a renderer that preserves indentation: the line must align with try:. Replace the example URL and device name, and supply any platform version or other capabilities required by your Appium setup. For a real iPhone, use its configured device name and ensure it is connected to the Mac hosting the iOS automation.

The explicit wait checks for the browser document’s complete ready state. That does not guarantee that client-rendered content, images, animations, or a particular element are ready. Add a wait for a meaningful selector or application state before capturing if the page fills in after navigation.

Understand what the screenshot contains
Appium’s screenshot reference describes a capture as the current viewport in a native context and the window in a web context. For a normal Mobile Safari page, treat the result as the visible browser viewport at capture time. Do not assume the WebDriver screenshot call produces a full-page image.
If you need the complete long page, verify that the specific installed driver and capture method support that behavior, then test it on the target iOS version. The documented screenshot behavior cited here does not establish universal full-page capture support. For a viewport capture, scroll to the required section first and take the screenshot only after that section is visible.
Keep the session reliable and control concurrency
- Limit concurrent Safari sessions. Apple documents that only one Safari browser instance and one WebDriver session can be attached at a time. Plan Grid capacity around the device and this Safari session limit; do not assume one Safari endpoint can serve parallel sessions.
- Wait for the state you intend to test. A successful navigation does not mean delayed page content has rendered. Wait for a target element or application-specific condition.
- Keep host addressing explicit. Use an Appium hostname or IP address reachable from Grid, especially when the services run on separate hosts.
- Match capabilities to registered devices. A request for a device name or iOS version that is not available to Appium may fail to create a session.
- Close sessions in a
finallyblock. This releases the WebDriver session after success or an exception and helps avoid leaving Safari occupied.
Common errors and fixes
Grid cannot create or route the session
Check that Grid’s relay configuration points to the correct Appium endpoint, the endpoint is reachable from the Grid host, and the request’s capabilities match the relay and available device. When Grid and Appium are on separate machines, replace loopback addresses with a reachable hostname or IP address.
Appium cannot find the requested iPhone or simulator
Confirm that the device is connected and trusted, or that the simulator is installed and available through Xcode. Make the requested device name and iOS version match what Appium can use. Simulator automation requires Xcode.

Safari automation does not start on a real device
Recheck Web Inspector and Remote Automation in the device’s Safari Advanced settings, the Mac’s WebDriver configuration, and the device’s connection to that Mac. Apple’s documented flow is based on a connected Mac.
The page loads but the screenshot is blank or incomplete
Wait for the page state the test actually needs, not only a successful navigation. Check whether the site renders content asynchronously, whether the target is below the fold, and whether the capture happens in the intended web context.
A second session is refused or stalls
Check whether another Safari instance or WebDriver session is already attached to that device. Apple documents a one-session-at-a-time Safari limit; serialize work for that endpoint or allocate separate available devices, while respecting each device’s own limits.

If you need a website screenshot by URL rather than proof of how the page renders on an actual iPhone, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace this Appium workflow for a real iPhone Safari capture.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
