How to Prepare ProRes Files for Continuous YouTube Streaming Without Huge Uploads

You can keep your ProRes master and send YouTube a compressed live feed instead. Learn how to choose the codec, bitrate, keyframes, and continuous playout method.

You do not need to send a ProRes-sized stream to YouTube. Keep the ProRes file as your high-quality master, then encode a smaller live delivery stream in H.264, HEVC/H.265, or AV1 at a bitrate suited to your resolution and frame rate. For continuous playback, run that encoder locally or use a hosted service; either way, test the actual stream and leave upload-bandwidth headroom.

Why ProRes is a poor fit for the live delivery stream

ProRes is useful as a high-quality source or editing master, but its file size does not dictate the bitrate of your live output. A live encoder reads the source and creates a separate delivery stream using a codec and bitrate supported by YouTube Live. Keep the original ProRes file if you may want to edit it again or preserve a high-quality archive; transcode the outgoing live feed rather than treating the master as the delivery format.

YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured feed to YouTube in the first place. YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, HEVC/H.265 and AV1, with AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). The page’s current recommendations were accessed October 3, 2026; YouTube does not show a publication date for them.

Choose a live output that fits your material and connection

Start with the resolution and frame rate your viewers need, then select the corresponding recommendation in YouTube’s live bitrate table. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of identical visual quality across all material, encoders, or scenes. The examples below are YouTube’s current page recommendations accessed October 3, 2026:

  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Output H.264 recommended bitrate AV1/HEVC recommended bitrate
1080p30 10 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps

H.264 is a straightforward starting choice when encoder compatibility matters. HEVC/H.265 and AV1 are also listed for live ingestion, with different recommended bitrates for some output modes. Check YouTube’s full live bitrate table for other resolutions and frame rates rather than extrapolating from these examples.

Use constant bitrate and keyframes deliberately

  • Set the encoder to CBR, as YouTube recommends.
  • Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Use AAC or MP3 audio if the stream includes audio.
  • YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Avoid choosing a higher frame rate than the source or the viewing experience requires.

Match color settings to the source

For SDR live video, YouTube specifies Rec. 709. For HDR live streaming over RTMP(S), its live settings recommend H.265. Do not label ordinary SDR footage as HDR. HDR workflows depend on correct transfer-function, primaries, and matrix metadata; incorrect tagging can produce an unintended result.

Prepare the ProRes source and start continuous playout

  1. Inspect the source. Note its resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, color treatment (SDR or HDR), and whether it contains the audio you want to stream. Use an output mode that fits the content rather than needlessly increasing resolution or frame rate.
  2. Keep the master separate. Preserve the ProRes original for editing or archiving when that matters. Configure your encoder or playout workflow to create a compressed live output; do not upload the source file as though it were the live ingest stream.
  3. Choose where playout runs. A local encoder or playlist workflow gives you direct control, but the computer and network connection must stay available for the full run. YouTube’s encoder directory lists software encoders, including OBS, as well as a cloud-service category for continuous prerecorded-video streaming. The directory is not an independent review of any provider’s performance, terms, or reliability.
  4. Configure the live encoder. Select RTMP/RTMPS, a supported codec, CBR, your resolution and frame rate, the appropriate bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Set audio to AAC or MP3 if needed. Add the YouTube stream key in the encoder or hosted service as directed by that product, and keep the key private.
  5. Preview before committing to a long run. Start a test in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the preview, and check that both video and audio are behaving as intended. Test representative scenes, including fast movement if the video has it.
  6. Monitor the continuous run. Watch stream health and the encoder’s output. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the bitrate or choose a lower resolution/frame rate, then test again.

Plan enough upload bandwidth

YouTube advises leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Compare the total outgoing stream bitrate—not your download speed—with measured, reliable outbound capacity. If you send a primary and backup stream, account for both. A connection that barely matches the video bitrate leaves little margin for normal variation and can cause instability during a long run. YouTube’s live encoder guidance describes the live requirements, and its bandwidth guidance discusses the upload headroom recommendation.

Do not confuse a live stream with a finished-video upload

A finished video uploaded to your channel is a different operation from a continuous live feed. For conventional uploads, YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 and listed audio formats, plus Fast Start (the moov atom at the front). Its SDR upload recommendations include 8 Mbps for 1080p standard frame rate and 5 Mbps for 720p standard frame rate; those are upload recommendations, not live ingest settings. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.

For HDR uploads, YouTube says ProRes 422 and ProRes 4444 can work, but require very high bitrates for high quality and may increase upload and processing time. YouTube supports PQ or HLG workflows and says correct HDR metadata is essential; it cautions against applying HDR metadata to footage that was not graded in HDR. Its HDR guidance lists HEVC/H.265, AV1, and VP9 Profile 2 as codecs that support 10-bit HDR with reasonable bitrates. These upload-specific details do not change the live encoder settings above. See YouTube’s HDR video guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The stream drops or becomes unstable: Compare the outgoing bitrate with dependable upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom. Lower the bitrate or output resolution if the connection cannot sustain the feed.
  • The stream looks poor despite following a bitrate recommendation: Treat the table as a starting recommendation, not a quality guarantee. Check that resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate are appropriate for the content, and test representative scenes in the preview.
  • Video appears washed out or color is wrong: Check that SDR output uses Rec. 709 and that HDR metadata is not being applied to SDR material. For HDR, verify the source’s grading and metadata workflow.
  • The live workflow seems to require uploading a huge file first: Confirm whether you are using a live encoder or a conventional video upload workflow. For live, the encoder should produce a compressed delivery stream from the ProRes source; upload recommendations are a separate set of settings.
  • Continuous playback stops when a local machine is unavailable: A local workflow depends on that computer and its connection remaining available. Consider hosted playout if you do not want a computer at home responsible for the run, and assess the provider’s current features and terms directly.
