To stream live on YouTube, enable live streaming on an eligible channel, choose a method—phone, webcam, encoder, or console—and check the preview and connection before going live. A webcam is simplest for a straightforward presentation; use an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio and video. You do not need expensive equipment to get started.
Check whether your channel can go live
- Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction. YouTube’s current guidance also sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16.
- Enable live streaming before the event. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until just before you plan to broadcast.
- For mobile live streaming, YouTube lists an additional minimum of 50 subscribers, a supported Android or iOS device, channel verification, enabled live streaming, and no live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days.
Requirements and interface labels can change. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance if your account does not show the expected option.

Phone or tablet
Use mobile streaming for quick updates, vlogs, or broadcasts where you want to move around with the camera. It has the extra subscriber and device requirements above, so it may not be available to a new or smaller channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.

Computer webcam
Webcam streaming is a simple choice for a face-to-camera broadcast or basic presentation. You need a computer with a webcam and live streaming enabled; YouTube’s webcam help page lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as supported browsers. In YouTube Studio, choose Create, then Go Live, and select Webcam.

If your computer does not have a usable camera, a USB webcam is optional—not a universal requirement. Start with equipment you already have and add gear only to solve a specific problem, such as poor framing or unclear audio.
Encoder
An encoder is software or hardware that sends a prepared audio-and-video feed to YouTube. Choose this route for gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external cameras and microphones. You will create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder, start its feed, then check the preview before going live on YouTube. Never share your stream key: anyone with it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel.

Console
Modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles may support direct streaming. The exact controls depend on the console and its current software, so follow the console maker’s instructions and YouTube’s overview of ways to stream.

- Verify and check the channel. Confirm that the channel is verified and has no active live-streaming restriction. Make sure the person broadcasting meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement.
- Enable live streaming early. Find the live-streaming option in YouTube Studio and complete activation. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation; mobile also requires at least 50 subscribers.
- Choose the method that fits the content. Use a phone for a mobile update, a webcam for a simple computer presentation, an encoder for screen or production control, or a supported console for gameplay.
- Prepare only the equipment you need. A webcam route needs a webcam. An encoder can work with external audio or video equipment, but those additions are optional when your existing setup is adequate. YouTube’s advice is straightforward: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Test your upload connection and framing. YouTube recommends approximately 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total bitrate of the stream. Check that your picture, framing, and audio are clear, and inspect the preview in Live Control Room before making the stream public.
- For an encoder, send a test feed first. Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder, and start its feed early. Confirm that the preview appears and check the watch page—including on mobile—before the event begins.
- Go live and monitor the broadcast. Once the preview and audio/video look right, start the stream in YouTube. Keep an eye on the broadcast rather than assuming that a successful encoder connection guarantees viewers can see and hear everything as intended.

The encoder feed does not appear in YouTube
Confirm that the encoder uses the server URL and stream key for the stream you created in Live Control Room. Check for a typo or an old key, then restart the encoder feed and wait for the preview. Keep the key private.
The stream stutters or drops
Compare your available upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate and leave approximately 20% headroom, as YouTube recommends. If the connection cannot sustain the feed, reduce the stream’s demands or use a more reliable network, then check the preview again.

A normal phone, webcam, encoder, or console setup is designed around a live broadcast from that device. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without leaving a computer or home connection on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
