To stream vertical video to YouTube with Castr, send a source into Castr, add YouTube as a destination, and configure the portrait output in YouTube Live Control Room. Castr forwards the video; YouTube’s vertical layout or your encoder determines how viewers see it. Set up the vertical format before going live—YouTube says you cannot add it after a stream has started.
How Castr and YouTube handle a vertical live stream
Castr is the ingest and distribution step: it receives a source and forwards it to configured destinations. YouTube controls the vertical viewing format through its Live Control Room layout or through a separate portrait feed sent by an encoder. Castr’s documented setup does not establish that Castr automatically creates a separate portrait composition.

The steps below use the workflow in Castr’s live-streaming guide, dated August 4, 2026. Dashboard labels and plan-dependent destination limits can change, so confirm the current options in your Castr account. Castr’s broader multistream guide, dated May 17, 2023, describes encoder feeds arriving over RTMP or SRT; treat it as general workflow guidance rather than a guarantee of current interface details.

Set up Castr and add YouTube
- Create a live stream in Castr. Choose a hosting region and the source method that matches your production. Castr documents publishing via RTMP/RTMPS and a webcam option.
- Send your source to Castr. For encoder ingest, configure the encoder to publish to Castr using the connection method shown in your account. Castr’s multistream guide describes RTMP or SRT ingest; verify the current supported options and connection details in the dashboard.
- Add YouTube as a destination. In the stream’s destination setup, choose YouTube. Connect a linked YouTube account or enter the platform server and stream key, then complete any requested platform fields.
- Enable the destination. Check that YouTube is turned on for the stream before proceeding to YouTube Live Control Room. If you use a Castr plan with destination limits, check the current plan details before adding other destinations.
Choose how YouTube will create the vertical experience
YouTube documents two ways to stream in both horizontal and vertical formats. Choose based on whether you want YouTube to adapt one feed or your production encoder to deliver separate compositions.

Option 1: Let YouTube adapt one source
- In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the built-in dual stream before starting the broadcast.
- Inspect the vertical preview. Select center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked, then adjust zoom and position to keep the important subject in frame.
- Check the horizontal and vertical previews before going live. A crop that looks acceptable in 16:9 may cut off faces, text, or other important details in 9:16.
Option 2: Send separate horizontal and vertical feeds
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and select Encoder for the vertical preview.
- Choose RTMP(S), then select the second stream key for the vertical feed.
- Configure your encoder and Castr destination mapping so the horizontal feed goes to its horizontal key and the portrait feed goes to the vertical key. Confirm the exact mapping in your current encoder and Castr setup before the event; do not assume one Castr feed creates both compositions.
- Once both formats are configured and previews look correct, go live from YouTube Studio.
Check eligibility and test before the event
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube’s vertical-live guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person live streaming must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube Studio for current account status.
- Decide the audience format. Choose portrait-only production or a dual-format broadcast, and plan framing accordingly.
- Verify the destination and preview. Confirm the Castr YouTube destination is enabled. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview for the format or formats you intend to send.
- Test audio and video.} YouTube recommends preparing encoder streams ahead of time, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video, and testing with an unlisted stream if appropriate.
- If streaming from a phone, lock screen rotation, test network speed, and test audio and video with an unlisted stream. YouTube notes that an external battery pack can be useful, but it is optional.
What viewers see—and what vertical changes
YouTube says vertical live streams can appear while viewers browse Shorts and open into a full-screen vertical experience in the YouTube mobile app. Discovery is an opportunity, not a guarantee of audience reach. The vertical live feed is not currently available on tablets, and scheduled live streams and Premieres do not appear in that feed.
YouTube’s feature comparison distinguishes some vertical and horizontal functions. The documented vertical experience includes vertical-feed discovery, scrollable live streams, and certain fan-funding features. The horizontal format supports clickable links in chat and channel descriptions, live pre-roll and mid-roll ads, 4K broadcast bitrate, Premieres, and Live Redirect; the comparison does not list these for the vertical feed. Feature eligibility and behavior can change, so check YouTube Studio for the current details.

For YouTube’s built-in dual stream, viewers share a stream URL and chat. Live Control Room reports metrics for both streams together during and after the broadcast; metrics for only the vertical stream become available 24 hours later.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- The stream is live but not portrait. Confirm that YouTube’s built-in vertical layout is enabled, or that the encoder’s portrait feed is routed to the second vertical stream key. Castr forwarding alone does not prove that a portrait composition has been created.
- The portrait preview cuts off the subject. In YouTube’s built-in layout, try fit to phone width or stacked instead of center crop, then adjust zoom and position. With an encoder-produced feed, correct the composition in the production setup and recheck the preview.
- The vertical feed does not appear. Check the Stream tab’s Encoder selection, RTMP(S) setting, second stream key, and matching route from encoder through Castr. Confirm the destination is enabled.
- You cannot add vertical after going live. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added once a stream has started. Stop and configure the vertical format before the next broadcast.
- Audio, video, or connection quality is unreliable. Test an unlisted stream, verify network speed where relevant, and monitor audio and video in Live Control Room before the public event.
