If OBS audio goes silent during an overnight sleep-sounds stream, first check the OBS mixer meter while the sound should be playing. A meter with no movement points to playback or capture; a moving meter means check OBS routing, output, and whether the problem is only local monitoring. These are separate signal paths, and the right fix depends on which one failed.
Why does OBS audio stop after running all night?
There is no single established overnight audio defect that explains every 24/7 OBS stream. The source could be an OBS Media Source, a browser or app, a capture device, or desktop audio; the operating system, OBS version, and affected output are also unknown. Start by locating where the signal disappears rather than changing settings at random.

Check the mixer meter when the audio is silent
If the meter does not move
In the OBS Audio Mixer, watch the meter for the source that should be playing. OBS documents the meter as an indicator of source level. If it shows no incoming level, investigate the playback or capture path before changing stream output settings:

- Check that the selected capture or playback device is still the intended one.
- Verify the operating system or playback application is still sending sound to that device.
- If a capture device is tied to a particular scene, make sure the relevant scene is active.
OBS can use Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture sources at scene level. The official guide warns that selecting the same device both in a scene and globally under Settings → Audio can cause echo. Choose one deliberate capture route for each device and recheck the meter: OBS audio sources guide.

If the meter moves
A moving meter means audio is reaching OBS, but it does not by itself prove viewers can hear it. Check that the source is not muted and its fader is not down. Then confirm the source is assigned to an audio track used by the stream or recording. OBS documents these mixer controls in its audio mixer guide.
Test the output independently: make a short recording or check the live stream from another device. This tells you whether the stream or recording is silent, or only your headphones and speakers are.

Separate monitoring from stream audio
OBS’s local monitoring lets the operator hear a source through a selected monitoring device; it is distinct from sending audio to a stream or recording. If an independent stream or recording has sound but your headphones do not, inspect the monitoring device and that source’s monitoring mode in the OBS mixer and audio settings.
A report for one setup on macOS 14 with OBS 30.2.3 describes monitoring stopping after a device reconnection, Mac lock, or restart. The reporter recovered monitoring by toggling it. That is a reasonable recovery check for a similar symptom, not a guaranteed permanent fix or evidence that stream output failed: OBS project issue report.

Test looping media and scene changes
If the sleep sounds come from an audio-only Media Source, test the source’s playback separately from local monitoring. One report describes monitoring loss around scene transitions, playback stop/start, or looping, but does not establish that stream output also failed. If the meter still moves, verify an actual recording or stream before concluding the sound is missing for viewers: OBS project issue report.
Record enough detail to reproduce the failure
Before replacing hardware, changing drivers, or rebuilding the scene, note these details while the problem is present:

- Operating system and OBS version.
- Sound source type: Media Source, browser or app, capture device, or desktop audio.
- The selected input, output, and monitoring devices.
- Whether the mixer meter moves.
- Whether the silence affects local monitoring, a recording, the live stream, or more than one of these.
- Whether it follows a scene change, playback transition, device reconnection, lock, or restart.
These observations narrow the affected signal path. The individual reports above describe specific setups; they do not establish one cause for every overnight stream failure.
