You can run recorded open house tours continuously on YouTube Live by looping the video files in a playback system and sending that output through a software or hardware encoder. YouTube Live handles the incoming stream; the system that plays and repeats the tour files must provide the looping. Set up the channel and encoder, test the stream, and monitor it after launch—continuous operation depends on the playback system, internet connection, power, and recovery plan.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. It must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch: YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Recorded tour files and a playback system that explicitly supports looping or scheduled playback of video files. YouTube explains how an encoder sends a feed, but does not prescribe or certify a particular app or device for looping prerecorded files.
- A software encoder on a computer or a dedicated hardware encoder. YouTube supports both approaches; choose one that can play the files continuously and send a compatible feed to YouTube.
- A stable upload connection, power for the playback and encoding equipment, and a way to monitor the broadcast. A continuous stream is only as dependable as this whole chain.
- Permission to show each property and any identifiable people, plus rights to music and other third-party media in the video.
Choose a playback and encoding setup
Software encoder on a computer
A computer-based setup can work if the selected playback and encoder software supports file playback or playlist looping, along with the YouTube ingest settings you need. Confirm that the computer can remain powered, connected, and unattended for the intended duration. Check how the software behaves if playback ends, the encoder disconnects, or the computer restarts; do not assume looping or automatic restart without verifying it in the chosen software.

Dedicated hardware encoder
A hardware encoder can be appropriate for a dedicated installation, but verify that the specific model supports prerecorded file playback and looping. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, while also describing software encoders as an option and noting that expensive equipment is not necessary to get started: YouTube live streaming tips. That guidance is not a requirement to buy hardware.

Neither category guarantees uninterrupted playback by itself. Before committing, check whether the system can repeat the tour files, restart after interruption, be monitored remotely, and sustain your chosen YouTube output settings. Also account for the cost of equipment, power, internet service, and the time required to monitor and recover the stream.

Prepare the tour videos and viewer information
Make the prerecorded nature clear
Describe the channel and broadcast accurately. State that viewers are watching prerecorded open house tours in the stream title and description, and use an on-screen label or graphic where appropriate. Do not present a recorded tour as live footage.
Review rights and privacy
Before scheduling or starting the broadcast, confirm that you have permission to show each property and any people who can be identified. Clear music and all other third-party material for this use. YouTube places responsibility for necessary rights to livestream content on the channel operator; see its livestream terms and conditions and guidance on avoiding live-streaming restrictions.

Build and test the playlist
Put the tour videos in the intended order and test the complete loop in the selected playback system. Check that transitions do not create unintended gaps, silent sections, or unexpected end screens. These are practical checks of your chosen playback setup; YouTube’s encoder documentation does not define a universal looping procedure.

- Enable live streaming early. In YouTube, confirm that the channel is verified and eligible. If this is its first livestream activation, allow up to 24 hours for access to become available.
- Open Live Control Room and create a stream. Set the stream’s title, description, visibility, and other available options for your broadcast. Explain that the tours are prerecorded. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream controls such as latency and DVR.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s corresponding output fields. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it in a recording or screenshot. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes connecting an encoder to a stream.
- Select a supported output configuration. Match resolution and frame rate to what the playback system, encoder, and upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table for the configuration you choose.
- Start the encoder preview and inspect it. Confirm that the correct tour is playing, video is visible, audio is audible and synchronized, and YouTube receives the feed. Check the stream’s accessibility using the channel or watch page and a mobile device before making the broadcast public.
- Start the broadcast deliberately. Once the preview and settings are right, begin the stream in Live Control Room and confirm that the public-facing page shows the intended content.
Use suitable video and audio settings
For H.264 at 1080p and 30 frames per second, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists a 5 Mbps minimum video bitrate and recommends 14 Mbps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio, its listed settings are 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. These figures are YouTube’s platform guidance verified in 2026; consult its table for other codecs, resolutions, or frame rates rather than applying the 1080p30 figures to every setup: YouTube encoder settings.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, in its encoder guidance. Use it if your encoder supports the recommended connection. Whatever settings you select, test with representative tour footage and audio: motion, image detail, and sound can expose problems that a static preview does not.
Monitor the stream and plan for recovery
After launch, monitor YouTube’s stream health and the actual watch page. Check that the video continues to move through the playlist, audio remains present, and viewers can access the stream. The encoder’s connection, the playback loop, computer or device power, and internet service can each interrupt a continuous broadcast; YouTube settings alone do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Decide in advance who will respond to a dropped feed and how they will restart playback or reconnect the encoder. Test the recovery procedure before relying on unattended operation. Keep the stream key private, and if it is exposed, replace it through the stream settings before continuing.

End the broadcast and understand the archive limit
When the continuous broadcast should end, stop it deliberately in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived in full; if you need a complete recording, arrange and verify a separate recording workflow rather than relying on the automatic archive.
