Run the default branch first: Happo uses it as the baseline for pull-request comparisons. The CI mechanics are not India-specific; confirm billing, taxes, currency conversion and payment options with Happo before budgeting in rupees.
Before adding Happo to the workflow
Happo captures UI states and compares them across commits to flag visual changes. Its CI CLI can create a report for a commit, compare a pull request against a baseline and post a status when it has permission. Happo describes visual testing in CI as a way to catch regressions early in its Continuous Integration documentation.

- Check your UI setup. Happo has integrations for Storybook, Playwright and Cypress. The generic CI workflow below is not a substitute for the dedicated Playwright or Cypress setup; follow the integration guide that matches your project.
- Choose browser targets deliberately. Include browsers that matter to your users and fit your plan. More browsers and component variants increase snapshot usage.
- Check the default branch name. The example assumes
main. Replace it if your repository uses another default branch.
Happo’s overview and integration information is available at Happo.

Install the package
For an npm project, add Happo as a development dependency:
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
npm install --save-dev happo
The Happo repository also documents installation with pnpm and Yarn. Use the package manager and lockfile already adopted by your project.
Add the configuration
Happo’s repository README illustrates a happo.config.ts configuration that reads credentials from environment variables and declares browser targets. A minimal example shape is:
export default {
apiKey: process.env.HAPPO_API_KEY,
secret: process.env.HAPPO_API_SECRET,
targets: {
chrome: { /* target configuration */ },
firefox: { /* target configuration */ },
'ios-safari': { /* target configuration */ },
},
};
Use the exact target configuration supported by the integration and project setup; the browser names above illustrate the available target choices, not a complete application-specific configuration. See the Happo repository README for configuration and target examples. Do not commit credential values in this file.

Store the credentials in GitHub Actions
- In the GitHub repository, open Settings → Secrets and variables → Actions.
- Select New repository secret and create
HAPPO_API_KEY. - Create a second repository secret named
HAPPO_API_SECRET. - Reference those secrets as environment variables in the Happo workflow step, as shown below.
Keep the secret values out of workflow YAML, configuration files and logs. For repositories that use environments or organization-level secrets, ensure the workflow has access to the secrets in the context where it runs.
Add the GitHub Actions workflow
Save this as .github/workflows/happo.yml. It follows Happo’s documented CI pattern: check out the pull-request head or pushed ref, fetch enough history for comparison, fetch main for non-main runs, install dependencies and invoke Happo.
name: Happo CI
on:
push:
branches: [main]
pull_request:
jobs:
happo:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
with:
ref: ${{ github.event.pull_request.head.sha || github.ref }}
fetch-depth: 100
- name: Fetch main branch
if: github.ref != 'refs/heads/main'
run: git fetch origin main:main
- uses: actions/setup-node@v4
- run: npm ci
- run: npx happo
env:
HAPPO_API_KEY: ${{ secrets.HAPPO_API_KEY }}
HAPPO_API_SECRET: ${{ secrets.HAPPO_API_SECRET }}
Adjust every main reference if your default branch has another name, including the push trigger, conditional and fetch command. If your repository’s merge-base or branch arrangement requires a different comparison base, use Happo’s documented base-branch option. The current CI guide is at Happo Continuous Integration.

Seed the baseline
Run the workflow on the default branch so Happo has a report to use as the pull-request baseline. Until that report exists, a pull-request run may not have the expected comparison point. The documented pattern fetches the default branch on non-default-branch runs so the CLI can compare against it.
Account for pull-request security
GitHub does not expose repository secrets to workflows triggered from forks by default. If a fork-originated pull request cannot access the Happo credentials, do not work around that by printing or embedding secrets. Decide whether to run without Happo for that event or adopt a permissions and trusted-workflow arrangement that fits your security policy.
Choose the right integration and estimate snapshots
Happo’s general configuration path can suit a direct setup, but teams using a UI test framework should use the corresponding integration instructions:

Estimate monthly demand before increasing browser coverage or running more often. Happo defines one snapshot as one component variant in one browser. Its estimate is:
Monthly snapshots = component variants × browsers × Happo runs per month.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For example, 40 variants captured in 2 browsers on 20 runs in a month would imply 1,600 snapshots, using Happo’s stated definition. Treat this as a planning calculation: the actual number depends on what the integration captures and how often CI runs.

Happo plan limits and India billing questions
The following are USD prices and limits published on Happo’s pricing page, accessed in 2026. They are vendor-listed plan terms, not an estimate of an Indian startup’s final rupee cost.
| Plan | Published price | Monthly snapshots | Browser coverage listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | 5,000 | Chrome |
| Starter | $149/month | 50,000 | Chrome, Firefox |
| Growth | $399/month | 150,000 | Chrome, Firefox, Safari |
| Pro | $749/month | 300,000 | Chrome, Firefox, Safari, iOS Safari, Edge |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | 1M+ listed | Not stated on the pricing page |
The pricing page lists additional snapshots at $0.006 each on the Starter, Growth and Pro plans. Check the live Happo pricing page before selecting a plan, since vendor terms can change.
The reviewed pricing information does not establish INR billing, GST invoice handling, Indian payment-method availability, or data-residency terms. Happo says payments are available by credit card, ACH or wire through Stripe, but that does not confirm which methods are available to an Indian business. Ask Happo for the current terms and an India-specific total before purchasing; do not treat the USD list price as the payable rupee amount.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- Missing credentials or authentication failure: check that both secrets exist under the repository or workflow environment, that their names match the YAML exactly, and that the job is allowed to access them. Do not print secret values while debugging.
- No pull-request baseline: run the workflow on the default branch first. Verify the default branch name and ensure the non-default run fetches that branch.
- Comparison cannot find the right commit: confirm the workflow checks out the intended pull-request head or push ref and fetches enough history for the comparison. Adapt the base-branch configuration if your repository does not use
main. - Workflow fails on a fork pull request: GitHub withholds repository secrets from fork-triggered workflows by default. Treat this as an expected security boundary and choose a safe workflow policy rather than exposing credentials.
- Browser target unavailable: check that the selected browser is included in the current Happo plan and supported by the integration configuration.
- Usage grows faster than expected: recalculate variants × browsers × runs. Reduce redundant targets or capture scope only if doing so preserves the coverage your team needs.
- Storybook, Playwright or Cypress captures do not reflect the intended states: check the framework-specific Happo integration instructions; the generic CI command alone does not define those integrations.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot API rather than component-level visual regression testing, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: its API returns clean screenshots or PDFs, removes known consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.
One GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, this cURL call captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
