To stream a recorded Nintendo Switch gameplay VOD continuously on YouTube, add the video file to OBS as a Media Source, turn on Loop, connect OBS to YouTube with your stream URL and stream key, then start the livestream in YouTube Studio after checking its preview. The Switch cannot currently stream gameplay directly to YouTube, according to Nintendo; an existing VOD can be streamed from a computer without a capture card.
What you need for a continuous prerecorded stream
The simplest setup is for a VOD that is already saved as a video file on your computer. OBS plays and loops that file, while its encoder sends the stream to YouTube. The computer, OBS, encoder connection, and internet uplink must remain operational while the stream is live.

- A video file you have the rights to stream.
- A computer running OBS and enough available storage for the file.
- A YouTube channel eligible for livestreaming, plus its stream URL and stream key.
- A reliable upload connection with bandwidth headroom above the selected stream bitrate.
You do not need a capture card just to loop a VOD that is already on the computer. A capture card is relevant only if you still need to record longer gameplay from the console.

How do I stream prerecorded gameplay on YouTube with OBS?
- Check YouTube livestream eligibility. The channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the planned broadcast time. See YouTube’s encoder livestream setup guidance.
- Create or open the livestream in YouTube Studio. Use the encoder workflow in the Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast on your channel.
- Add the VOD to OBS. In OBS, add a Media Source, choose the local video file, and enable Loop. Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that its audio is audible in the OBS mixer. OBS documents the Media Source’s looping option in its Media Sources guide.
- Configure OBS to send the stream to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If using a custom ingest setup, use the stream URL provided by YouTube together with the key. Use a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain; YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate in its streaming tips.
- Wait for the YouTube preview. Start the encoder output in OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview for picture and sound. Test privately or as unlisted first where practical. Verify that the VOD loops back to its beginning and that no unwanted desktop audio or other content is being broadcast.
- Start the event and monitor it. Once the preview is correct, start the livestream in YouTube Studio. Keep OBS, the computer, and the network running; check stream health and audio periodically rather than assuming a loop makes the broadcast unattended-proof.
How do I loop a video on OBS?
Use a Media Source for the local VOD and enable its Loop option. Looping restarts playback when the file reaches its end; it does not itself start a YouTube event, restore a failed connection, or keep the computer awake. Check the transition from the final frame back to the start before going live, especially if the video or soundtrack has a noticeable gap, abrupt cut, or silence at the file boundary.

Can I stream Switch gameplay directly to YouTube?
Nintendo says gameplay cannot currently be streamed directly from a Switch to YouTube. The practical route is to stream an existing video file from a computer. If you still need to create long-form footage, a capture card can feed the console’s video signal into a computer for recording or encoding. Compatibility depends on the particular capture device, computer, and console setup; a vendor’s example guide does not establish that every capture card works with every configuration.
Why the Switch Capture Button is not a full-session recorder
Nintendo’s built-in capture feature saves up to 30 seconds of gameplay from before the Capture Button is pressed, and the resulting compatible clips are available in Album. Some games do not support the feature. Nintendo documents transferring captures to a Windows computer using a data-capable USB cable connected directly to the Switch; the dock’s USB ports do not support that transfer feature. A microSD card is an alternative transfer method. These clips and transfer options are not a substitute for recording a full gameplay session.

How long can a YouTube livestream run before it stops saving?
Plan for sessions shorter than 12 hours if the replay archive matters. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. These are platform behaviors, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. Keep a local recording if the footage must be preserved, and deliberately end and restart the broadcast before reaching the 12-hour threshold. Each restart creates a separate live event.

Nintendo’s Game Content Guidelines, updated September 2, 2024, apply to livestreams as well as uploads: Nintendo Game Content Guidelines. Nintendo encourages creator-added input such as commentary or creative editing, and says creators may not simply upload or livestream an existing Nintendo video or gameplay footage without their own creative or editorial input. Its guidelines separately permit posting gameplay videos and screenshots captured using Nintendo system features, such as the Switch Capture Button, without additional input or commentary. That allowance should not be assumed to settle every case involving a long repeated loop.

Before broadcasting, review the current Nintendo guideline and consider the specific game, the nature and length of the repeated footage, and any music or other third-party material included in it. Nintendo says third-party intellectual property requires the necessary permissions and that creators must not imply Nintendo sponsorship or affiliation. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules are separate from Nintendo’s permissions; meeting one platform’s requirements does not automatically establish compliance with the other.
Keeping the broadcast reliable
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends about 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate. Other traffic on the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS.
- Test the whole chain. Confirm the file plays, the loop returns cleanly, audio is present, the YouTube preview appears, and the event starts as expected before relying on the setup.
- Keep equipment running. A local OBS stream depends on the computer, software, encoder, and network continuing to operate. Disable sleep or shutdown behavior that would interrupt the machine, and monitor the broadcast.
- Protect the archive. Maintain a local copy or recording when the replay is important, and end and restart sessions before 12 hours rather than relying on YouTube to archive a longer stream.
- Plan for interruptions. A dropped connection or stopped computer interrupts the stream. A loop setting only repeats the file while OBS is running; it is not a recovery mechanism.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No YouTube preview | Incorrect stream key or URL, encoder not started, or livestream activation still pending. | Recheck the key in OBS and the event in YouTube Studio. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| Video plays once and stops | The Media Source loop option is not enabled or the wrong source/file is selected. | Open the Media Source properties in OBS, verify the selected file, and enable Loop. |
| Stream buffers, drops frames, or disconnects | Insufficient or inconsistent upload bandwidth, competing network traffic, or a computer/encoder issue. | Check YouTube stream health, reduce the stream bitrate if necessary, preserve the recommended upload headroom, and test the connection. |
| Picture appears but audio is missing or wrong | The file has no usable audio, the source is muted, or the wrong audio is being sent. | Check playback in OBS, inspect the audio mixer and meters, and listen to the YouTube preview before starting the event. |
| Replay is missing or incomplete | The stream exceeded 12 hours or archiving did not complete as expected. | Keep a local recording and schedule sessions below 12 hours; YouTube does not promise capture of longer broadcasts. |
| Capture footage is unavailable | The game may not support the Switch Capture feature, or the transfer method is unsupported. | Check game support. For USB transfer, connect a data-capable cable directly to the console rather than to the dock; use microSD as an alternative. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep an uploaded recording looping on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: StreamNeo. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not live camera input, and streams to YouTube only.
