How the 24/7 setup works
A YouTube livestream is not a playlist of uploaded VODs playing directly on a watch page. An encoder reads the videos and sends a live audio-video feed to a YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s API documentation uses a 24/7 feed as an example of a live broadcast, and Chess.com identifies OBS and Streamlabs as software options for streaming chess content.

The basic chain is: authorized chess VOD files → encoder playlist or scene → YouTube Live broadcast. The encoder and its source files must remain available for the stream to continue. With a local encoder, that means the computer, power, and internet connection must stay on.
Prepare the VODs and check your rights
Use files you have permission to stream
You are responsible for having the rights needed to show the live feed and any resulting archive on YouTube. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

That responsibility applies to the whole video, not just the chessboard: commentary, music, overlays, tournament footage, and other creators’ VODs can have separate owners. A video being publicly viewable, or available to download, does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.
Chess.com material has limits
Chess.com’s creator guidance says community members may stream or post their games subject to its community policy, but may not stream or post paid content, including lessons and videos. It also cautions creators not to imply Chess.com sponsorship or endorsement. This does not establish permission for another creator’s VOD, a tournament broadcast, music, or third-party overlays; clear those separately.

Account for live Content ID checks
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a placeholder and warning; unresolved material may lead to temporary interruption or termination. Even when you hold a license, YouTube says the live feed may still be interrupted unless your channel is on the rightsholder’s Content ID allowlist. Keep permission records and ask the relevant rightsholder about allowlisting when applicable.
Set up the broadcast and encoder
- Create or select a YouTube Live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the live-control workflow and create a broadcast or select the one you intend to use. Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it can send video to your channel.
- Configure an encoder. In OBS or another encoder, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in its streaming settings. OBS is one software starting point for chess streaming; interface wording can vary by version. Use RTMPS where the encoder and YouTube workflow offer it.
- Add the VODs as a looping source. Arrange the authorized files in a playlist or equivalent media source, enable looping, and confirm the transition from the last item back to the first. Check that each file’s audio and video are present. Keep the files available to the encoder for the full run.
- Choose a sustainable output profile. Start with a resolution and frame rate that keep the board readable without exceeding the upload connection or overloading the computer. Use constant bitrate (CBR), and set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Start privately or unlisted and test. Start the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, then verify video, audio, the watch page, and stream health before making the broadcast public. Confirm that the stream key belongs to the intended broadcast.
- Monitor the operation. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and encoder status. Keep at least 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends. If you are also recording locally, verify that the recording file is growing and that storage is sufficient.
Choose resolution, codec, and bitrate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; up to 60 fps; CBR; and a two-second recommended keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its recommended bitrates for common chess-stream profiles are:

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of quality on a particular connection. Select a rate your upload can sustain continuously, then leave the recommended headroom for other network traffic and bitrate variation. Chessboards are often visually static, so a higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better; prioritize legible pieces and stable playback, and test the actual files and network you will use.
Plan for archives and long-running continuity
A stream beyond 12 hours may not be saved
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If the archive and rewind matter, keep independent local recordings and consider ending and restarting before the 12-hour boundary. That is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee that every restart pattern will preserve every archive.

Balance uninterrupted viewing with recoverability
One long broadcast is simpler for viewers who want a continuous feed, but it carries the stated archive and DVR limitations. Planned shorter broadcasts can fit the archive guidance better, while requiring you to manage each restart and its viewing continuity. Keep original VOD files and local recordings separate from YouTube’s archive so that a missing platform capture does not erase your only copy.
