Create or schedule a YouTube Live event, connect an encoder with the event’s stream URL and stream key, and feed it a file or looping playlist. A software encoder such as OBS needs a computer that stays on; a standalone encoder or cloud service can remove that requirement.
The direct answer
YouTube Live accepts an encoder feed, not just a camera or screen capture. The encoder converts your prerecorded file or playlist into a live stream and sends it to YouTube over RTMPS. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming, create or schedule an event, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder, start the encoder, wait for the Live Control Room preview, and select Go live. Your viewers see a normal live watch page without seeing your desktop.

For a continuous channel, the media source must be configured to loop or advance through a playlist. The encoder must also remain connected and running. That last requirement is the key difference between methods: OBS and other software encoders depend on a computer, while a standalone appliance or a cloud service can continue when your home computer is off.

Meet YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules
- Your channel must be verified.
- The channel must not have live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days.
- The person operating the stream must be at least 16 years old.
- First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so activate the feature before your planned broadcast.
These are channel-level requirements. Changing encoders does not bypass a restriction or shorten the first-time activation window.

Prepare the media and rights
Keep the source files in a format your chosen encoder can decode and test every file before scheduling a long broadcast. You must own the videos and music or have a licence that covers streaming on YouTube. YouTube’s encoder documentation explains how to transport a signal; it does not grant permission to use someone else’s recording, music, sports footage or television content.
A loop can also create a reused-content problem if the material is not meaningfully yours or licensed for this use. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetisation policies for your channel, and keep licences, permissions and attribution records where applicable. A successful connection to YouTube is not evidence that a copyright claim will not occur.
Choose the delivery method
There are three practical ways to keep prerecorded video live. If your priority is an always-on channel without leaving equipment at home, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs from the cloud, accepts any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free.
| Method | What stays running | Automation and control | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A cloud slot | Upload files or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and loop continuously; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. | Requires a StreamNeo subscription after the first free day. |
| Software encoder (for example, OBS) | A computer, its operating system and the encoder application | Flexible media sources and playlists; scheduled starts and restart behavior depend on your computer and encoder configuration. | The computer, power, storage and internet connection must remain available. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | The appliance, network connection and its attached storage or media source | Can operate independently of a computer. YouTube’s verified list includes the AJA HELO Plus; its PlayToStream function schedules prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. | Up-front hardware cost and possible separate storage or networking costs. |
Set up a prerecorded YouTube Live stream with an encoder
1. Enable live streaming and open Live Control Room
- Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio and choose the live-streaming option to reach Live Control Room.
- If live streaming is not enabled, complete channel verification and activation. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
Do not wait until the broadcast day to discover that activation is pending. A channel can be verified and still be unable to start immediately while activation is processing.
2. Create or schedule the event
- In Live Control Room, create a new live event or schedule one for a future date and time.
- Enter the title, description, visibility and other event details appropriate to your channel.
- Open the stream settings and copy both values YouTube provides: the stream URL (the server endpoint) and the stream key (the secret identifier that authorises your encoder).
Scheduling gives you a watch-page URL and lets you promote the broadcast before it starts. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in a description, screenshot or support request. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
3. Configure the software encoder on a computer
Install and open a software encoder such as OBS on the computer that will run the stream. In its streaming settings, select YouTube if the application offers a YouTube service. If it asks for a custom server, paste YouTube’s stream URL into the server field and the stream key into the key field.
Add the prerecorded content as the encoder’s media source. For one file, use a media source configured to restart or loop when playback ends. For multiple files, use the encoder’s playlist or media-source feature and put the files in the desired order. Confirm that the playlist actually returns to its first item after the last item; a playlist that stops at the end will end your broadcast even though YouTube is still available.

| Setting | What to decide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. | It protects the connection between the encoder and YouTube. |
| Resolution | Choose the resolution you intend to deliver and that your upload can sustain. | YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into multiple output formats, but the incoming signal still determines the source quality. |
| Frame rate | Match the source’s frame rate rather than forcing an unnecessary conversion. | Unexpected frame-rate conversion can add judder or increase the encoder workload. |
| Bitrate | Set a stable video and audio bitrate within YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate. | A bitrate that exceeds your sustained upload capacity causes buffering and dropped connections; an unnecessarily low bitrate reduces detail. |
| Keyframes | Use a consistent keyframe interval. OBS documentation specifically advises consistency so automatic quality transitions can occur smoothly. | Irregular keyframes can make adaptive delivery and stream processing less predictable. |
| Audio | Include an audio track when the programme has sound, and verify that the selected source is not muted. | A video can appear healthy in preview while delivering silence if the wrong source is selected. |
There is no single bitrate that fits every file and connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the resolution and frame rate you select, then leave enough upload headroom for normal network variation. If your original file is 4K but the connection cannot sustain the required bitrate, a lower output resolution can be more reliable than repeated reconnects.
4. Start the encoder and verify the preview
- Start playback of the file or playlist in the encoder.
- Start streaming in the encoder. The status should show that it is sending data to YouTube.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the preview. Check the picture, motion, crop, aspect ratio and audio meters.
- When the preview is healthy, select Go live. The event then appears on its watch page and can be delivered to subscriber feeds according to YouTube’s notification and visibility rules.
Starting the encoder is not always the same as publishing the event. If you never select Go live, YouTube may continue showing a waiting or preview state rather than a public broadcast.
5. Keep the playlist running
For a 24/7 channel, enable looping at the media-source or playlist level and watch the first transition from one file to the next. Look for a black frame, missing audio, a stalled source or an unexpected end-of-file action. A short test event is safer than discovering a playlist error after several hours.

Monitor the encoder’s connection, CPU and storage conditions. A software encoder can stop because the computer sleeps, reboots for updates, loses power, runs out of disk space or closes the application. A standalone encoder still needs power and a stable network, even though it does not need a general-purpose computer.
6. End the event and understand archiving
When you want to stop, stop sending the media from the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete, automatically archived recording; plan your own recordings or shorter scheduled events if an archive is important.
Using a standalone encoder instead of a computer
AJA HELO Plus and prerecorded playback
YouTube’s verified hardware-encoder list includes the AJA HELO Plus, a standalone H.264 encoder. Its PlayToStream capability allows prerecorded media to be scheduled and streamed directly to YouTube Live without a computer. The appliance can therefore remove the operating-system and OBS dependency from the setup.
The connection sequence remains the same: create or schedule the YouTube event, enter the stream URL and key in the encoder, select the media and schedule or start playback, then confirm the Live Control Room preview before choosing Go live. Verify the exact playlist, scheduling, storage and restart functions in the current HELO Plus documentation before buying; hardware capabilities and firmware interfaces can change.

When hardware is a good fit
- You need a dedicated appliance rather than a multipurpose computer.
- You want the encoder to remain independent of desktop applications and operating-system notifications.
- You already have suitable storage, power protection and wired networking for the appliance.
- The up-front purchase cost is acceptable compared with keeping a computer running.
Hardware does not remove every failure mode. A lost internet connection, power interruption, damaged media file or revoked stream key can still stop the broadcast. Confirm what automatic reconnect and scheduling behavior the specific model provides instead of assuming every encoder behaves the same way.

Copyright, reused content and channel safety
Use material you are authorised to stream
Before uploading a file or adding it to a playlist, confirm that your permission covers public performance, online streaming and any music embedded in the recording. A licence for personal playback or a purchased download is not automatically a YouTube streaming licence. Keep documentation for stock footage, music licences, commissioned work and releases.
Do not treat a loop as permission or monetisation
Looping a video changes its delivery pattern, not its ownership. YouTube may receive copyright claims or apply reused-content rules even when the encoder setup is technically correct. Avoid presenting another creator’s work as your own, and check current YouTube policy before relying on a continuous loop for monetisation.
Protect the stream key
The stream key authorises an encoder to publish to the event. Store it in the encoder’s secure settings, limit access to the people who operate the channel and rotate it if it is exposed. A public stream URL is useful for viewers; the private key is not.
Troubleshooting: symptoms, causes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder has not started, the stream URL or key is wrong, or the connection is not reaching YouTube. | Confirm the encoder shows an active outgoing stream, re-copy the URL and key, check RTMPS selection, then restart the encoder. |
| “Invalid stream key” or authorisation error | The key belongs to a different event, was reset, contains an extra character or has been exposed and replaced. | Copy the current key from the same YouTube event, paste it without added spaces and save the encoder settings before starting again. |
| Preview is available but the event will not go live | The encoder is sending data, but the publishing step has not been completed. | Wait for a healthy preview and select Go live in Live Control Room. |
| Buffering, dropped frames or repeated reconnects | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, the bitrate is too high, or the computer is overloaded. | Measure sustained upload capacity, reduce output bitrate or resolution within YouTube’s guidance, close competing traffic and check CPU usage. A wired connection and a cloud or hardware alternative can remove a home-computer bottleneck, but neither can repair an unstable source network. |
| Video is stretched, cropped or surrounded by bars | The source aspect ratio and encoder output canvas do not match. | Set the output dimensions to match the intended presentation, preview the crop before going live and avoid stretching a source merely to fill the frame. |
| No sound | The media source has no audio track, the wrong audio device is selected, or the source is muted. | Play the file locally, inspect the encoder’s audio meters and confirm that the media source is routed to the stream mix. |
| Playlist stops after one file | Looping is disabled or the playlist’s end action is set to stop. | Enable loop or repeat in the media source, test the transition and verify that every file is readable by the encoder. |
| Stream stops when the laptop lid closes | The operating system suspends the computer or the encoder process exits. | Prevent sleep during the broadcast, keep the computer powered and test recovery after a restart. If the computer must be off, use a standalone encoder or cloud service instead. |
| Stream ends after a power or network outage | The encoder did not reconnect or restart its media source. | Check the encoder’s reconnect and startup options, use a UPS where appropriate and test an outage before advertising a 24/7 schedule. |
| No automatic archive is visible | The event exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold or the event was ended before processing completed. | YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For longer programming, retain local source files and plan separate shorter events when an archive is required. |
Costs and operating trade-offs
Software encoder costs
A software encoder may be free, but the complete setup is not cost-free: the computer consumes power, needs enough storage and processing capacity, and must remain connected. An internet outage, sleep mode, update or accidental application close can interrupt the stream. You are responsible for monitoring and recovery.
Standalone hardware costs
A hardware encoder requires an up-front purchase and may need separate media storage, network equipment, replacement power supplies or firmware maintenance. It can reduce dependence on a general-purpose computer, but it does not remove the need for reliable power, internet service and properly prepared media.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without a computer, OBS or a home connection staying on. The same service is used for every plan: one always-on YouTube stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, support from the StreamNeo team and 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across your active slots. Uploads are streamed as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and no quality tiers.
- Upload: Add a recording or build a playlist in StreamNeo.
- Add the stream key: Paste the YouTube stream key once and connect the destination.
- Go live: Start the slot; StreamNeo loops the uploaded media in the cloud while your computer can be off.

Final checklist before publishing a continuous stream
- Channel verification is complete, live streaming is enabled and no recent live-stream restriction blocks the channel.
- The operator is at least 16 and first-time activation has completed.
- Every video and audio element is owned or licensed for YouTube streaming.
- The correct YouTube event, stream URL and private stream key are configured.
- RTMPS is selected where supported.
- Resolution, frame rate, bitrate and consistent keyframe timing are appropriate for the source and upload connection.
- The playlist loops, transitions cleanly and contains no unreadable files.
- The Live Control Room preview shows the intended picture and audio before Go live is selected.
- Power, networking, storage and restart behavior have been tested for the chosen software, hardware or cloud method.
- You have a plan for streams longer than 12 hours because YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a YouTube stream URL and a stream key?
The stream URL identifies the YouTube server endpoint that receives the encoder feed. The stream key is the private value that authorises your encoder to publish to the selected event, so it should be kept secret and reset if exposed.
