To stream prerecorded lessons as a continuous YouTube Live channel, send a repeating lesson playlist to YouTube through an encoder, using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. You can run the encoder on a computer or dedicated hardware, or use a cloud service for the looping stream. Before relying on any setup, test the playlist loop, connection recovery, and monitoring: YouTube’s setup guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted or permanent streaming.
What you need before setting up
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and says streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Recorded lesson files that you have the rights to stream, including any music, images, or other third-party material they contain.
- An encoding solution that can send the files as a live feed and repeat or schedule them as needed. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders; its help also lists a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded video.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the outgoing stream and other network use.
A capture card, dedicated encoder, or wired connection may suit a particular production, but none is universally required just to stream prerecorded files.

Choose how the lessons will run continuously
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder; it does not turn a folder of lesson files into a continuous channel by itself. The encoder or service must play the lessons in the intended order and send that output to YouTube.

Set up the YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming: In YouTube Studio, complete the channel verification and live-stream activation steps. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, as described in YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
- Prepare the lesson sequence: Add the files to the playback or playlist workflow in your chosen encoder or service. Check lesson order, transitions, audio, and whether playback restarts at the beginning after the final lesson. YouTube does not prescribe a particular playlist player for this workflow.
- Create or schedule a stream: In YouTube Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one and configure its settings and metadata. Scheduling can make an eligible upcoming stream visible to viewers and let them opt in to reminders. Consult YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance for the current controls.
- Copy the connection details: Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings into the matching server/URL and key fields in the encoder. The key is a credential: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with people who should not control the feed. YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys; reset a key if it is compromised.
- Preview before going live: Start the encoder feed and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public stream. Confirm the right lesson is playing and that picture and sound arrive as expected.
- Start and verify playback: Start the stream in the encoder and, when required by the workflow, start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Check the watch page from another device or network so you know viewers can see and hear it.
YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming. Its setup page explains the connection process and automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Configure bandwidth and test continuity
Use upload speed—not download speed—to judge whether your connection can carry the stream. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity with 20% headroom. Other devices and users sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. YouTube’s streaming tips also emphasize preparation and ongoing checks.
There is no single bitrate, resolution, or codec value established here for every educational stream. Check the current settings YouTube presents for your stream and encoder, then choose settings your source media and sustained upload connection can support. Avoid raising quality beyond what the connection can carry reliably.
- Run a private or otherwise limited test before a public launch, including a complete lesson and at least one playlist transition.
- Simulate a brief network interruption and test what happens if the encoder or playback process stops and restarts.
- Check failover behavior if your setup includes it; do not assume it exists just because a stream is continuous.
- Watch the local archive file, where applicable, to confirm it is growing as expected.
- Monitor audio and video during operation, and verify the stream on watch pages and mobile devices.
Check rights and YouTube’s live-stream rules
You are responsible for having the rights needed to stream the content, including music and other third-party material. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions place that responsibility on the provider and require compliance with applicable laws and YouTube policies.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match may lead to a warning or a placeholder in place of the stream; unresolved issues can interrupt or terminate it. If you have licensed material, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone does not guarantee that automated matching will leave the stream uninterrupted. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Understand archiving and the limits of a continuous stream
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. Treat that as a limit on the documented guidance, not a promise about longer streams or a guarantee that a 24/7 channel will have a permanent archive. If you need recordings, maintain a local archive where practical and check YouTube’s current behavior for the intended event length.
A continuous channel also depends on the encoder or service, its internet connection, the playlist process, and monitoring. YouTube’s documentation explains how to connect and prepare a stream, but does not guarantee that a creator’s broadcast will remain uninterrupted indefinitely.

Troubleshoot common failures
