To start a YouTube video blog, create a YouTube channel, choose a subject you can return to, record a useful first video with equipment you already have, and upload it through YouTube Studio. You can publish it right away or review it privately first. Start with Shorts or longer videos according to what your idea needs; neither format nor any posting schedule is universally best.
How do I start a YouTube video blog?
- Choose a viewer and a recurring subject. Decide who you want to help or entertain and what your videos will cover. A clear focus helps a new viewer understand what to expect from another installment; it is editorial guidance, not a YouTube eligibility requirement.
- Create a YouTube channel. A Google Account alone is not a public channel: YouTube requires a channel to upload videos, comment, or make playlists. You can set up a personal channel or use the business or other-name option, which can use a Brand Account and support multiple managers or owners. See YouTube’s channel creation instructions.
- Plan one useful first video. A practical structure is a direct opening, the main point or demonstration, and a concise close. Make the video deliver what its title promises rather than trying to cover everything about your subject at once.
- Record with what you have. YouTube’s upload tips say, “There is no need for fancy equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A smartphone can also be used to create Shorts in the YouTube app. Treat extra equipment as optional, not a prerequisite.
- Upload and review. In YouTube Studio, sign in, select Create, then Upload videos, choose your file, and fill in its details. Add an accurate title and description, then choose the visibility setting deliberately. Uploading imports a video file; publishing makes it available to viewers. For a test or review, choose private or unlisted. Follow YouTube’s upload workflow and beginner upload tips.
- Choose a manageable format and process. Use a format you can make consistently without compromising the idea. There is no established universal best format or posting cadence.
- Review results with the right metric. For Shorts, distinguish total views from Engaged views in Analytics; they do not mean the same thing.
What equipment do I need to start vlogging?
Begin with a phone or other recording equipment you already own. YouTube explicitly says fancy equipment is unnecessary, and its Shorts guide describes creating with a smartphone. The official guidance does not make a new camera, microphone, or phone a condition for starting. A tripod or external microphone may suit a particular setup, but they are optional choices rather than platform requirements.

Should I make Shorts or long videos?
Choose by the material, your available filming and editing time, and the metric you want to assess. Shorts suit ideas that work as a concise, self-contained moment; longer videos suit explanations or demonstrations that need more room. YouTube does not identify one format as best for every creator.
| Consideration | Shorts | Longer videos |
|---|---|---|
| Good fit | A short, self-contained idea or moment | A subject needing a fuller explanation or demonstration |
| Creation route | Record in the YouTube app or upload an eligible vertical video | Upload a video file through YouTube Studio |
| Platform details | Up to three minutes; Shorts uploads are limited to a maximum resolution of 1080p, according to YouTube’s current creation guide | No corresponding limit is established by the cited Shorts guide |
| Performance comparison | Consider Engaged views as well as total views | Use analytics appropriate to the video and goal |
YouTube says Shorts can appear in the Shorts Feed, search, the homepage, subscriptions, notifications, and a channel homepage. Its view-count definition changed on March 31, 2025: a view counts when a Short starts or replays, without a minimum watch time. Engaged views remains available in Analytics to compare viewers who chose to keep watching, and YouTube uses Engaged Shorts views for YouTube Partner Program eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing. Check YouTube’s Shorts creation guide for current format details.

How do I upload my first YouTube video?
- Open YouTube Studio and sign in to the channel where you want the video to appear.
- Select Create > Upload videos, then select the video file.
- Enter the video details, including an accurate title and description.
- Choose the visibility setting. Use private or unlisted if you want to review a test upload before making it public.
- Complete the upload flow and publish only when you are ready for viewers to access it.
YouTube treats uploading and publishing as separate actions: uploading imports the file, while publishing makes it available to viewers. The exact interface can change; use the official upload instructions if the labels differ.
How do I handle copyright and originality?
Use original material or material for which you have the necessary rights. Giving credit by itself does not establish permission. Monetization also requires compliance with YouTube’s channel monetization policies, including Community Guidelines, copyright, and advertiser-friendly rules. YouTube identifies non-original reuploads and artificial or fake views as examples of views that do not qualify as valid engaged Shorts views. Review the current channel monetization policies and Shorts monetization policies; rights questions depend on the material and circumstances.

How many subscribers do I need to monetize on YouTube?
YouTube has an earlier-access tier and a higher threshold for Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium revenue. The thresholds below are from YouTube’s eligibility guidance accessed October 3, 2026; availability depends on country or region, policy compliance, and account requirements.
| Monetization access | Threshold |
|---|---|
| Earlier access to fan funding and Shopping features | 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days |
| Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium revenue | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days |
These are separate eligibility levels, not a promise of approval or earnings. You apply from the Earn area in YouTube Studio, and YouTube reviews channels for policy compliance. Potential features include Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, YouTube Premium revenue, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping; availability and terms vary by feature and region. Check YouTube Partner Program eligibility and its monetization features guidance for current requirements. Because YouTube’s feature terms can change, verify the current terms in Studio before relying on a displayed future effective date.

Keeping a YouTube channel live between video blogs
A video blog does not need to be a continuous live stream. If you specifically want uploaded videos to play as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option: it runs the stream from the cloud, supports uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. See StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
