The PC renders the game; SHIELD receives the stream and sends it to the TV. Wired Ethernet for both devices is the most reliable starting point when available.
What you need
- A gaming PC that can run the game and the host software.
- An NVIDIA SHIELD TV with Moonlight installed.
- Sunshine installed and running on the PC. Moonlight’s setup guide, edited February 27, 2025, documents Sunshine as the host option and Moonlight as the client: Moonlight Setup Guide.
- A home network that lets the PC and SHIELD communicate. Ethernet is preferable where practical; see NVIDIA’s legacy network advice below.
- A controller compatible with Moonlight and the game, if you plan to play from the couch. Compatibility depends on the client and individual game.
Sunshine and Moonlight are separate: Sunshine runs on the PC, while Moonlight runs on SHIELD. The TV is the display, not the device doing the game rendering.

Set up Sunshine on the gaming PC
- Open the Moonlight Setup Guide and follow its official Sunshine installation instructions for your PC.
- Start Sunshine. Installation may require a reboot to complete setup and enable controller emulation.
- On first run, create a login for Sunshine’s local settings interface. Keep those credentials available for configuration.
Install Moonlight and pair SHIELD with the PC
- Install and open Moonlight on SHIELD TV.
- Connect SHIELD and the PC to the same home network. For initial setup, keep both on the local network rather than starting with remote internet access.
- Select the PC when it appears in Moonlight. Moonlight displays a pairing PIN.
- Enter the PIN on the PC and accept the pairing prompt. If prompted for host credentials, use the login configured for Sunshine.
Moonlight’s setup instructions cover the discovery and PIN-pairing flow. If the PC does not show up, first confirm both devices are on the same LAN and that the PC’s firewall allows the host traffic. Remote access requires separate networking and security configuration; do not expose ports to the public internet casually.

After pairing, choose an available app in Moonlight and start streaming. Sunshine includes entries such as Steam and Remote Desktop. To launch a game or application that is missing, add its executable or launcher in Sunshine; the setup guide explains adding apps and streaming the desktop.

- Individual game: A direct game entry can make couch use simpler, but some launchers or games need extra configuration.
- Steam: Launch Steam from Moonlight, then use a controller-compatible interface such as Steam Big Picture if available in your Steam setup.
- Desktop session: Use Remote Desktop or the desktop option to open a launcher or application manually. This is flexible, though navigating a desktop from the couch may be less convenient.
A missing game tile does not necessarily mean the game cannot be streamed. Manually added apps may need configuration, and unlike automatically detected entries they may not receive the same handling. NVIDIA’s older GeForce Experience guidance likewise says manually added games are not automatically optimized; those instructions apply to its legacy workflow: NVIDIA: How to Add Games to GameStream.
Choose a network connection and reduce interruptions
NVIDIA’s Recommended SHIELD TV Setup is written for GameStream, NVIDIA’s legacy streaming feature. Its network recommendations are useful practical guidance, not a performance guarantee for every Sunshine and Moonlight installation:

The same NVIDIA page says local GameStream traffic does not require fast internet access; the relevant connection is between devices on the home network. If the router lacks Ethernet ports, a Gigabit switch can provide additional wired connections.
If the stream drops frames or packets, lower the stream bitrate and check the local network before changing many settings at once. NVIDIA says GameStream may reduce resolution when the network cannot sustain the connection; lowering bitrate can also reduce image quality. On the TV, select its Game or Gaming picture mode if available. NVIDIA notes that many TVs offer such a mode for lower input latency, but this is guidance rather than a measured or guaranteed reduction.

Set realistic resolution and HDR expectations
The usable output depends on the PC’s rendering ability and the capabilities of the host software, SHIELD, TV, HDMI input, and network. Start with a mode that all parts of the setup support, then adjust quality if streaming is unstable.
NVIDIA’s specific 4K requirements are for legacy GameStream, not universal Sunshine/Moonlight minimums. Its GameStream 4K requirements say 4K streaming is available to SHIELD TV, recommend a GeForce GTX 1080 or better for most games, list Maxwell- or Pascal-based minimum GPU tiers for some games, call for an Intel Core i5 or better, and strongly recommend wired Ethernet for the PC. The page also specifies SHIELD on the same network by Ethernet and a 4K TV connected to an HDMI 2.0 input. Treat those thresholds as legacy GameStream guidance, not a promise that a given Sunshine/Moonlight setup will reach 4K at a particular frame rate.

NVIDIA’s HDR instructions are also legacy GameStream-specific: they require an HDR-10-capable setup and say GameStream HDR works only for automatically detected games launched from NVIDIA Games, excluding Steam Big Picture and manually added apps. Do not assume these restrictions or capabilities describe current Sunshine/Moonlight behavior.

NVIDIA’s support pages still describe the older GeForce Experience and NVIDIA Games pairing flow. In that route, the PC user enables GameStream in GeForce Experience, then pairs from NVIDIA Games on SHIELD using the same account or a PIN. The steps may not match the software currently installed, and the continued availability of help pages does not establish that GameStream remains available in current NVIDIA software or on every SHIELD installation.

If your PC still exposes the SHIELD/GameStream setting, the legacy route may remain usable. Otherwise, the current setup documented in Moonlight’s guide is Sunshine on the PC and Moonlight on SHIELD. Moonlight’s guide includes both Sunshine and older GeForce Experience instructions, so check which host options actually appear in your installed software rather than assuming the older one is present.

- PC is absent from Moonlight: Verify both devices are on the same home LAN, Sunshine is running, and the PC firewall permits the stream.
- PIN pairing fails: Start again on the local network and follow the on-screen pairing prompt on both devices.
- A game is absent: Add its executable or launcher in Sunshine, or start Steam or a desktop session and launch it there.
- Stream stutters: Prefer Ethernet for both endpoints; if that is not possible, check Wi-Fi signal and congestion, then try a lower bitrate.
- Input feels delayed: Use the TV’s Game/Gaming mode if available, and check controller compatibility with both Moonlight and the game.
