Verify the full destination address and every transaction before sending or signing. A hardware wallet can keep keys offline, but it cannot protect a recovery phrase that someone else obtains.
Choose where to keep everyday funds and savings
A hot wallet runs on an internet-connected phone or computer. It is convenient for payments, but its online exposure makes it a poor place for funds you do not need to spend routinely. Bitcoin.org recommends considering offline storage for savings and describes a practical split: keep a small amount in a hot wallet and store savings offline (Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guide; Bitcoin.org FAQ).

Cold storage keeps private keys offline. A Bitcoin hardware wallet is one way to do this: it can reduce exposure to online and computer threats while still allowing transactions to be approved on a dedicated device. It is not theft-proof, and losing or damaging the device need not mean losing access if you have a usable backup. The backup itself must remain secret and secure.
Choose an arrangement you can operate and recover safely. A more complex setup can reduce some risks but creates more ways to make a backup or recovery mistake. Do not move a large balance into a setup you have not learned to use.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Protect the recovery phrase and make a complete backup
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase or mnemonic, is a sequence of words that can restore a wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the corresponding bitcoins. Bitcoin.org defines it as “a sequence of words from which a wallet can be fully restored” (FAQ; Vocabulary).
- Write the phrase down and keep it securely offline. Do not photograph it, save it in cloud storage, send it in a message, or enter it into a website or chat.
- Never disclose it to someone claiming to be wallet or exchange support. Legitimate support should not need your recovery phrase or private key.
- Keep the written backup protected from discovery, damage, and unauthorized access. Multiple secure physical locations can reduce reliance on one location, but every copy creates another place that must be protected.
Back up the entire wallet according to its software’s instructions. A backup of only the keys currently visible may omit funds, and some wallets require regular backups as new addresses are generated. Many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from one recovery phrase, but do not assume that behavior: check the documentation for your particular wallet (Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guide).

Spot phishing and impersonation before they reach your wallet
Scammers may use fake wallet sites or apps, counterfeit hardware wallets, phishing links, or people posing as support. Treat unexpected messages about a wallet problem, account recovery, or urgent security action as untrusted until independently verified.
- Reach a wallet or exchange through its official website or a trusted bookmark, rather than an unexpected message, sponsored search result, or unverified app listing.
- Verify contact details using the organization’s official site before responding to a support request or phone call.
- Do not give anyone your recovery phrase or private key, and do not install software or grant remote access because someone who contacted you says it is needed to fix your wallet.
- Be wary of recovery services or strangers who promise to retrieve funds in exchange for your phrase, key, or an upfront payment. A person who gets the phrase may take the funds instead.
Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance explains common impersonation and malware risks. If you entered a recovery phrase on a suspicious site or shared it with someone, treat the wallet as compromised; use a trusted, secure device and a new wallet with a new recovery phrase to move any remaining funds as soon as safely possible. Do not reuse the exposed phrase.

Check addresses and transaction approvals
Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, so a mistaken or fraudulent transfer generally cannot be reversed. Before sending, compare the entire receiving address with the address you intended to use; checking only its first or last characters can miss a substituted address. Confirm the amount and recipient before approving.
Before signing a transaction, read what the wallet is asking you to authorize. A malicious website can prompt a transaction that transfers funds. Stop if the recipient, amount, or other transaction details are unexpected, or if you do not understand the approval request. See Bitcoin.org’s explanation of what users need to know about Bitcoin and its scam guidance.

Keep wallet software current and plan for recovery
Install wallet software only from verified sources and keep it and your device’s software updated. Updates can address security issues, but they do not replace a backup or protect a phrase that has already been exposed.

For a higher-value arrangement, multisignature can require multiple independent approvals and reduce dependence on a single device or location. It also adds setup and recovery complexity, so it is not a casual substitute for a well-understood wallet and backup plan.

What to do if you suspect a compromise
- If you exposed the recovery phrase or private key: assume the related wallet may be accessible to someone else. From a trusted device, create a new wallet with a new phrase and move remaining funds to it; never enter the exposed phrase into a supposed recovery service.
- If you clicked a suspicious link or installed an unverified app: stop entering wallet credentials or approving transactions on that device. Use a device and wallet source you trust, and check for unauthorized transactions.
- If you lost a hardware wallet: the device alone is not the backup. Restore access using the wallet’s legitimate recovery process and your securely held backup. If you think the phrase was also exposed, move funds to a newly created wallet.
- If you sent bitcoin to the wrong or fraudulent address: preserve the transaction details and contact the exchange or service involved through verified official channels if applicable. Do not pay strangers who promise guaranteed recovery; Bitcoin transactions cannot simply be reversed.
