Steam Link lets an Android handheld show and control a game running on your PC; it does not install or run the PC game on the handheld. For the initial pairing, connect both devices to the same network, open Steam on the PC, then follow Steam Link’s on-screen setup.
What you need before you start
- An Android handheld that runs Android 5.0 or newer and can install the Steam Link app. Valve lists support for many Android phones, tablets and TVs; compatibility with a specific gaming handheld depends on its Android version and app support. Valve’s Android support page describes the app as free.
- A PC with Steam installed, turned on, and signed in to your account.
- A local network shared by the PC and handheld for initial discovery and pairing. Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router.
Steam Remote Play sends the game’s video and audio from the PC to the handheld and returns the handheld’s input to the PC. The game continues to run on the computer. Valve’s Steam Remote Play overview explains the streaming setup.

Pair the Android handheld with your PC
- On the PC, open Steam and sign in. Leave the computer on while you play.
- Connect the handheld and PC to the same network. For the first connection, keep both on the same local network so Steam Link can find the computer.
- Install and open Steam Link on the handheld. Follow the app’s on-screen instructions to locate and pair with the PC.
- After the connection is established, choose a game in Steam Link and start playing from the handheld.
Valve’s Android setup instructions give this general workflow rather than separate steps for each handheld model. If the app installs but the built-in controls are not recognized, check the device maker’s documentation or connect a supported controller.

Other input devices may work, but Valve does not list them as officially supported on its Android support page. That list does not certify the built-in controls of every gaming handheld. If considering a phone-style controller such as the Kishi, confirm that the handheld physically fits and supports the required connection before buying one; it is optional, not a requirement for Steam Link.
Improve a choppy or delayed stream
Start with the network path
- Connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet when possible. Valve recommends a wired host connection and identifies wireless interference as a common streaming problem.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the handheld where signal strength permits. It can avoid some congestion on 2.4 GHz, but its shorter range means distance and walls may weaken the connection.
These are Valve’s suggested network settings; they are guidance rather than a guarantee of a particular frame rate or latency.

Use the performance overlay and reduce stream load
Enable Steam’s Remote Play performance overlay on the client to inspect network timing. Valve notes that large spikes in the overlay’s cyan line indicate variable network time and often coincide with stutter or freezes. If the connection cannot sustain the selected quality, try Balanced or Fast streaming quality, or lower the resolution or bandwidth. These changes reduce network load but can make the image less detailed.

- Confirm the PC is on, Steam is open, and you are signed in; check that both devices are on the same local network for initial pairing.
- Check whether firewall software allows Steam Remote Play traffic. Valve lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036, and TCP ports 27036 and 27037.
- Check that router access-point or client isolation is disabled. It can prevent devices on the same Wi-Fi from communicating with one another.
- Public, workplace, school or university, guest, and captive-portal networks commonly block the device-to-device connections Steam Link needs. Do not change settings on a managed network without its administrator’s approval.
These connection checks come from Valve’s Steam Link network troubleshooting guidance. A network that blocks local device communication may not be fixable from the handheld.
