Not as a class, based on the available evidence. There is no well-supported rule that foldable phones have better or worse 5G performance than conventional slab phones. The exact phone, its regional version, your carrier and local network, and how you hold the device all matter. A current controlled comparison that isolates the form factor has not established a general foldable-versus-slab difference.
What the evidence says about foldable versus slab performance
The most relevant recent antenna study assessed 18 commercial 5G smartphones in Denmark. Gao, Chen, Liu, and Pedersen measured total radiated power (TRP) and total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) across bands and usage scenarios. Their 2024 study reports up to 10 dB of NR-band TRP variation depending on which side of the head was used, and up to 3 dB of TIS variation across hand-only scenarios. Those are findings about the study sample and test conditions—not measurements of a foldable-versus-slab gap. Read the study record from Aalborg University.

The reviewed evidence does not establish that a hinge, folding screen, thicker folded body, or orientation makes foldables systematically better or worse at 5G. Nor does it provide a current matched-pair test that holds the carrier and network conditions constant while comparing a foldable with a slab phone. There is therefore no defensible universal percentage, speed difference, or signal-strength penalty to quote.

Why one phone can perform differently from another
How you hold it
Antenna measurements can change with use position. The 2024 study’s head-side and hand-only results show why a lab result under one orientation should not be treated as a guarantee for every grip or call position. The GSMA’s operator guidance also notes that handset design choices can conflict with antenna radio performance; it describes antenna-performance testing rather than ranking foldables against slab phones. See GSMA TS.24 V7.0.

Carrier, coverage, and obstructions
5G performance depends on the network available where you are, the bands supported by your phone, and radio conditions such as distance and blockage. A 2020 study of early commercial 5G networks in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Atlanta found that line of sight, obstructions, and mobility affected results; hands or the body could block mmWave signals in non-line-of-sight conditions. Those observations explain environmental effects, but the study reflects early 5G deployments and should not be used to predict current speeds or a present-day foldable’s performance. Read the Narayanan et al. field study.
Exact model and regional version
A phone family name alone does not tell you which 5G bands a particular unit supports. As one US-market example, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold5 specification lists both sub-6 and mmWave support and gives a US band list. Samsung cautions that 5G availability and speeds depend on market, carrier, network connection, and other factors. That sheet describes the US Fold5, not every Fold5 regional variant or every foldable. Check Samsung’s US Galaxy Z Fold5 specification.

How to compare two phones fairly
If you want to know whether a specific foldable will work as well as a specific slab phone, compare the exact devices under as similar conditions as possible. A single speed test—or the 5G icon alone—does not isolate antenna performance.

- Confirm the exact variants. Check the model number or regional SKU for each phone, then compare its supported 5G bands with your carrier’s requirements and coverage. Do not assume a band list from one market applies to another.
- Match the setup. Use the same carrier, location, network mode, test server, and approximate test window. Keep the phones in comparable positions and note whether they are in the hand, against the head, or placed freely.
- Repeat and record conditions. Run several tests rather than relying on one result. Note signal conditions and nearby obstructions; network performance can change with location and blockage.
- Separate the outcomes. Record reception and connection reliability separately from download speed, upload speed, and latency. A speed result reflects the phone and network together, not antenna performance alone.
- Check the case and grip if one phone seems worse. Samsung says a cover can affect call reception or data services depending on the network environment. Compare with and without the case as a troubleshooting check; that caveat does not show that cases generally cause problems or that a replacement will improve 5G.
What to check before buying a 5G foldable
For a buying decision, prioritize compatibility with your carrier and region over assumptions about the folding design. Verify the exact model’s 5G bands and carrier support, then consider whether independent measurements use conditions relevant to your typical use—such as hand-held or head-use tests rather than free-space measurements alone. The available sources do not provide a controlled foldable/slab modem comparison, so modem generation and software should be checked for the particular models rather than generalized by form factor.
