To play an Xbox player with a PlayStation player, first make sure the game supports cross-play between those platforms. Then allow cross-network play on Xbox, review PlayStation privacy and invitation settings, and follow the game’s own friend or invite steps. There is no universal console switch that enables cross-play in every game.
1. Confirm the game supports Xbox–PlayStation cross-play
Console permissions only allow a game to use cross-network play; they cannot add the feature to a title that does not support it. Check the game publisher’s official help page for supported platforms, whether cross-play must be enabled in the game, and how to find or invite a player on another platform. Account linking and matchmaking rules vary by game, so use that title’s instructions rather than assuming one shared process.

Also confirm both players can access the same game version. If online play still does not work after changing permissions, check whether that specific game requires a subscription for online multiplayer. PlayStation notes that some games require PlayStation Plus and directs players to the game’s PlayStation Store listing for details; that is not a universal cross-play requirement. PlayStation’s online multiplayer guidance explains the subscription qualification.

- On the Xbox console, open Settings > General > Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy.
- Open the relevant privacy details and allow You can join cross-network play.
- If the game still cannot connect, check You can join multiplayer games as well. Microsoft lists multiplayer access separately from cross-network play, so allowing one does not necessarily allow the other.
On PC, Microsoft’s Xbox privacy controls use the wording You can play with people outside of Xbox services. The setting names and menus can differ from the console path. See Microsoft’s cross-network play guidance for the platform-specific details.

Voice and text permissions are separate from permission to join cross-network games. Change communication controls only if the problem is voice chat, text, or contact with another player; broadening every privacy permission is not necessary just to enable cross-play.
3. Review PlayStation privacy controls
PS5
Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy, then choose View and Customise Your Privacy Settings. Under Communication and multiplayer, review Get crossplay game invitations if you are not receiving invites. This setting controls whether invitations can reach the account; it is not a system-wide command that forces every game to support cross-play.

PS4
Go to Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings and select the feature you want to change. The PlayStation privacy guide does not identify a universal PS4 cross-play toggle, so check the game’s own settings and support instructions for its cross-play controls.
PlayStation also allows privacy settings to be managed through Account Management online, and says account privacy settings apply across devices. See PlayStation’s privacy settings guide for console and account options.

4. Use the game’s friend and invitation system
Once platform permissions are in place, follow the game publisher’s directions to enable any in-game cross-play option, link an account if required, and search for or invite your friend. The location and name of these controls differ by title; there is no universal Xbox-to-PlayStation friend list or account-linking sequence established across games.
Example: Destiny 2
Bungie’s Destiny 2 Cross Play Guide illustrates how the controls can vary by platform. PlayStation players can opt out through an in-game setting. Xbox players are directed to Settings > General > Online Safety & Family > Privacy & Online Safety > Xbox Privacy > View Details and Customize > Communication and Multiplayer, where You can join cross-network play must be allowed. Bungie also describes a separate Xbox communication permission.

In the same guide, Bungie distinguishes Cross Play from Cross Save: Cross Play lets players form fireteams across supported platforms, while Cross Save concerns access to characters across accounts on different platforms. Enabling one does not mean the other is enabled.

5. Check family and communication restrictions
If the account belongs to a child, family controls may block cross-network play even when the game and console support it. Microsoft says titles must respect Xbox family-member privilege settings; its documented test setup shows child defaults of Block for both You can join multiplayer games and You can join cross-network play. A parent or family organizer may need to review the child account’s permissions. See Microsoft’s XR-045 documentation.

On PlayStation, a family manager, parent, or guardian can manage a child’s privacy settings and choose which settings the child may change. If play works but invites, voice, or text do not, inspect the relevant invitation or communication controls rather than changing unrelated privacy options.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot in this order
- Check game support: verify that the specific title supports play between Xbox and PlayStation, and that both players can access the same version.
- Check Xbox permissions: allow cross-network play and, separately, multiplayer games.
- Check PlayStation privacy: on PS5, review cross-play game invitations; on PS4, look in the game’s settings because the PlayStation guide does not name a universal toggle.
- Check family controls: have the family manager or parent review restrictions on any child account.
- Follow the game’s steps: verify its account-linking, friend-search, cross-play, and invite procedure.
- Check online-play requirements: look up any subscription requirement for that particular game.
