How to Stream Multiple Pre-Recorded Videos to YouTube Live with FFmpeg Concat

Stream a playlist of pre-recorded videos to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by choosing between compatible-stream concatenation and a normalized re-encode.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a playlist of pre-recorded videos to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, use the concat demuxer when the files have compatible streams and you want to avoid re-encoding. If the clips differ in ways that need normalizing, use the concat filter and encode a consistent output instead. Then send that output to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, using encoder settings that match the output.

Choose the right FFmpeg concat method

FFmpeg has two relevant approaches, and they solve different problems. The concat demuxer joins compatible inputs at the packet level; it can avoid decoding and re-encoding. The concat filter joins decoded streams, allowing filters and normalization, but requires encoding the result. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the filter route as recommended when re-encoding is needed: FFmpeg FAQ.

Method Use it when Trade-off
Concat demuxer with stream copy Input streams are compatible and no filtering or normalization is needed. Fast and avoids another encode, but incompatible streams or output requirements can make it fail or produce unwanted transitions. Stream copy cannot apply filters.
Concat filter with encoding Inputs differ, or you need to resize, change frame rate, filter, or otherwise normalize the clips. Requires decoding and encoding, adding processing work and potentially some quality loss.

Before choosing, inspect every file and compare its stream layout, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, and audio configuration. Differences in these properties are warning signs that stream-copy concatenation may not be appropriate. Test the actual playlist: neither method guarantees seamless transitions.

FFmpeg documents stream copy as copying packets without decoding or encoding. That avoids an encode generation, but it cannot supply transformations that require decoding and may not work when the output needs information or compatibility the inputs do not provide. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Prepare and connect the playlist

Inspect the source files

  1. Use a media inspector or FFmpeg’s stream information output to check each video’s audio and video streams, codec, dimensions, frame rate, time base, and audio format.
  2. Decide whether the clips are sufficiently compatible for the concat demuxer. If properties differ materially or you need filters, plan to use the concat filter and encode.
  3. Play through the intended sequence locally, especially at clip boundaries, to catch missing audio, unexpected gaps, or other source issues before sending it live.

The exact playlist-file syntax and path-safety behavior can vary with FFmpeg details; consult the documentation for your installed build before preparing the concat input. Do not disable path-safety checks casually. The FFmpeg FAQ explains the demuxer-versus-filter choice.

Create the YouTube ingest destination

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes this workflow in Manage live stream settings.
  2. Configure FFmpeg’s output destination with the ingest URL and key using the syntax required by your chosen protocol and FFmpeg build. Prefer RTMPS: YouTube recommends it, and FFmpeg documents it as streaming over an encrypted connection.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not place a real key in a public command, tutorial, screenshot, or shared log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.

Set output parameters to match YouTube guidance

Select a codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval that YouTube supports for your output. YouTube’s encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS protocols, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Audio requirements and suitable choices depend on the actual output and selected protocol, so use the current platform table rather than assuming all listed options are interchangeable.

Rehearse, start, and monitor the live stream

  1. Before going public, run a test with representative motion and audio from the playlist. A static or silent check cannot reveal all issues in real content.
  2. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and inspect stream health and any messages in Live Control Room.
  3. Check that your upload connection can sustain the video and audio bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend a reliable network, a speed test, and 20% bandwidth headroom; that headroom is platform guidance, not a guarantee for every network.
  4. Watch the playlist through clip boundaries. If transitions fail or playback becomes unstable, reassess input compatibility and move to a normalized, re-encoded concat-filter workflow where appropriate.

See YouTube streaming tips for network preparation and YouTube encoder settings for test and health guidance.

Fix common problems

  • Concat or stream copy fails: Compare stream layouts, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, and audio configurations. If they differ or need changes, normalize with the concat filter and encode rather than treating stream copy as universal.
  • Transitions have gaps or glitches: Test the exact source sequence and inspect the clips around the boundary. Compatibility and source timing matter; do not assume concatenation guarantees seamless joins.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Match the bitrate and other settings to the actual output codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check upload capacity and network stability.
  • The stream does not connect: Verify that the stream URL and key belong to the selected YouTube live stream, and confirm the protocol and destination syntax for your FFmpeg build.
  • The stream key appears in a log or public post: Treat it as compromised and reset it in Live Control Room before continuing.
  • A test looks fine but the real playlist does not: Repeat the test with representative motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the run.
