Complete the dashboard’s supported login and OTP flow in Puppeteer, wait for a dashboard-specific ready signal, then call page.screenshot(). Use fullPage: true for the whole page or capture a particular chart or panel with elementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer’s Page.authenticate() is for HTTP authentication, not a general way to complete an application’s OTP login.
What you need before you start
- Permission to sign in to the dashboard and automate its supported authentication flow.
- The dashboard URL and the selectors for its login fields, OTP field, submit buttons, and a stable element that appears when the dashboard is ready. These vary by application.
- A supported way to obtain the OTP. If it arrives outside the browser, use the account owner’s approved process to enter it; do not bypass the challenge or defeat rate limits.
- A secure place to store credentials and screenshot files. Private dashboards may show confidential information, so do not put secrets in source control or logs, and handle captures according to your organization’s security requirements.
The examples below use placeholder URLs and selectors. Replace them with the values for your application, and verify method signatures against the Puppeteer version installed in your project. The referenced stable API pages identify Puppeteer 25.12.0; the cookie how-to cited below is on the Next documentation path, not a stable-version guarantee.

Sign in, complete OTP, and wait for the dashboard
Use the application’s own login form and supported OTP process. Once authentication succeeds, wait for a stable, dashboard-specific signal—such as a heading, navigation item, or widget that only appears in the authenticated view. A generic navigation wait cannot prove that every dashboard has finished rendering. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigating before capture, but the application must define what “ready” means for its pages (Puppeteer Screenshots guide).

Runnable example
This example assumes an OTP is available to the operator through an authorized channel. It prompts for the code rather than attempting to intercept or bypass OTP delivery. Install Puppeteer in your project, set the environment variables, and adapt the selectors to the site.

}The example waits for a DOM signal, not a universal guarantee that asynchronous charts or data have settled. If the application exposes a more meaningful ready state, wait for it instead. A site may replace elements while rendering; acquire a target element only after its final version is present.
Choose full-page or element capture
Capture the full dashboard
Use Page.screenshot() with fullPage: true when you need the page beyond the current viewport. Puppeteer’s screenshot options also include clipping and output settings such as image type; consult the ScreenshotOptions API reference for the options supported by your installed version.

Use an element handle when only one chart, table, or widget is needed. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view for its screenshot. If the element handle has become detached because the page replaced that node, the call errors; wait for the final element and obtain a fresh handle.

Why Page.authenticate() is not the OTP solution
Page.authenticate({ username, password }) supplies credentials for HTTP authentication. It is not documented as a general application-login or OTP API. The method reference also notes that it enables request interception internally, which can affect performance (Page.authenticate() API reference). For a dashboard’s web form and OTP challenge, automate the application’s supported form flow as shown above.
Cookies and session restoration
Puppeteer provides browser- or context-level cookie operations to get, set, and delete cookies. Cookie attributes include properties such as httpOnly, secure, and sameSite. The page-level setCookie API is deprecated in favor of browser- or context-level APIs in the Page reference.

Cookie restoration is site-specific: Puppeteer’s API documentation does not guarantee that a particular service will accept a copied or restored session cookie, nor is restoring one a way to bypass that service’s OTP policy. Prefer the supported login flow unless the service owner explicitly provides an approved test or session mechanism. The cookie guide is published under Puppeteer’s Next documentation; check the installed version’s API before relying on version-sensitive behavior.

The path option writes the image to the named file. Treat the screenshot and any authenticated browser profile as sensitive data: restrict access, avoid logging their contents or credentials, and retain or delete them according to the dashboard owner’s requirements. Close the browser in a finally block so it is shut down when capture succeeds or an error occurs.
Troubleshooting
The OTP field never appears
The flow may not require OTP on every sign-in, or the field name and step order may differ. Inspect the authorized application flow and update the condition and selectors. Do not assume that every login challenge is a single text input.

The script reaches the page but the screenshot is blank or incomplete
Navigation completion is not the same as application readiness. Wait for a stable element or state specific to the authenticated dashboard, and use the full-page option if content extends below the viewport. If data or charts render asynchronously, identify a reliable application signal for their completion rather than adding an arbitrary delay as a universal fix.
The element screenshot fails with a detached-element error
The page likely replaced the node after the handle was acquired. Wait for the final selector after rendering and acquire a new handle immediately before calling screenshot().

Remove hard-coded secrets, keep credentials in an appropriately protected runtime secret store or environment, and avoid printing them or the OTP. Rotate any credential that has already been exposed.

Page.authenticate() changes loading behavior
That API enables request interception internally and may affect performance. Use it only for HTTP authentication; for an application login, automate the form and OTP workflow instead.
