Yes. You can play videos with different resolutions in one continuous YouTube Live event by sending YouTube a single encoder feed and having the encoder switch between clips. YouTube transcodes that incoming feed into playback formats for viewers; your source files do not all need identical dimensions. The encoder’s handling of changes in resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, and audio depends on the software, so test the full playlist before broadcasting publicly.
How the continuous stream works
YouTube receives the encoder’s live output, not a sequence of separate uploads. The encoder plays each prerecorded clip in order and sends one feed to the YouTube server URL using the stream key. YouTube then creates multiple playback formats for viewers. As YouTube puts it, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” YouTube’s encoder guidance describes this transcoding; it does not guarantee that every encoder will scale or frame each playlist clip in the same way.

Prepare the clips and playlist
- Order the videos. Build the playlist in the sequence you want viewers to see. Check the duration of each item and whether the encoder is set to repeat the playlist or stop at its end.
- Check format differences. Note each clip’s resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, and audio. Mixed resolutions can work, but different shapes or frame rates may cause changes in framing or motion when the encoder switches sources.
- Choose how clips fit the output canvas. Check the encoder’s playlist and scaling controls. Depending on the software, a clip may be scaled, cropped, or shown with unused space around it. Do not assume automatic letterboxing, seamless transitions, or audio normalization; verify the actual output.
- Check audio continuity. Listen for mismatched loudness, silence, clipping, or abrupt transitions between files. Fix source audio or use the encoder’s documented audio controls before the live event.
Choose a stable encoder output
Use one output resolution and frame rate that your encoder and upload connection can sustain throughout the broadcast. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. Manual selection is available with a custom stream key; use it only when you need a defined output and have confirmed your encoder can maintain it.

These are platform recommendations, not a promise of a particular picture quality or a guarantee that your connection can sustain the feed. Rates depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec, and YouTube’s table can change. Check the current YouTube bitrate and encoder settings for your exact combination before configuring the stream. YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS and says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options for RTMP/RTMPS, with supported combinations depending on setup.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream using YouTube’s encoder setup workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding fields in your encoder. The exact field labels vary by software; YouTube explains these values under live stream settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Anyone who has it may be able to connect an encoder to your channel’s stream. Do not publish it, include it in a screen recording, or share it with people who do not need it.
- Start the encoder feed and wait for the stream preview and status in Live Control Room. Confirm the expected title, visibility, and event settings before making the broadcast public.
Test the whole playlist before going public
Test privately or with an unlisted event before relying on the playlist for a public broadcast. Include at least one clip from each materially different format group—especially changes in resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, or audio format. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream.

| Option | When it fits | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | Standard encoder workflows and typical SDR live streams. | Follow the encoder’s supported settings and YouTube’s current codec and bitrate guidance. |
| HLS | Use cases such as HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP, when the encoder and stream setup support it. | Higher latency than RTMP. YouTube requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range mode. |
See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions before choosing HLS; its ingest requirements are more specific than a typical RTMP setup.
Go live, monitor, and end the event
- Start the encoder and confirm YouTube receives the feed and displays the expected preview.
- Begin the event through Live Control Room when you are ready for viewers. Monitor stream health and the playlist as it runs.
- When finished, end the event using YouTube’s stream controls, then stop the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a stream lasting 12 hours or longer will be archived as one video.
Troubleshooting mixed-resolution playlists
- A clip is cropped, stretched, or surrounded by empty space: The clip’s aspect ratio differs from the encoder canvas or the encoder’s scaling mode. Adjust the fit/fill or scaling setting, or prepare a version with the desired framing, then test again.
- The picture stutters when a high-resolution clip starts: The encoder or upload connection may not sustain the chosen output under that clip’s load. Test the most demanding footage, reduce the outgoing resolution or frame rate, or use a bitrate appropriate to the revised output.
- There is a pause or jump between clips: The encoder’s playlist feature may reopen or reinitialize media with different properties. Check its transition and playlist settings and test every format change; YouTube’s general guidance does not define how third-party playlist software switches files.
- Audio drops out or changes volume: Check whether the clips use different audio tracks, formats, or loudness levels. Normalize or convert source audio if needed, and verify the encoder’s audio configuration across transitions.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the stream URL and key, confirm the encoder is using a protocol and settings supported by that stream, and inspect Live Control Room for the reported issue. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
- Stream health degrades during the event: Check upload stability and encoder load, then lower the output settings to a sustainable level. A speed test and a representative full-sequence test are more useful than relying only on a plan’s advertised download speed.
Copyright and monetization checks
Having permission to play a video on your own channel does not automatically establish that you have rights to broadcast every element in it. Check music, footage, images, and other third-party material before streaming, and review YouTube’s rules for live content and monetization. Repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded material also does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization; YouTube evaluates channels under its applicable policies. Review the current requirements in YouTube Help and use the copyright safety checklist as a preflight aid.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving an encoder computer running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. It streams the uploaded files to YouTube, not from a camera.
