To have OBS request a stream start when Windows launches it, add OBS’s --startstreaming parameter to a shortcut, then arrange for Windows to launch that shortcut at startup or through Task Scheduler. This can automate OBS’s launch and its request to go live; it does not guarantee that YouTube is receiving a live broadcast. Sign-in, saved OBS settings, and network readiness still matter.
Before you automate OBS
First confirm that OBS is configured for the YouTube stream you intend to resume. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and check the selected service, server, and stream key. OBS’s overview guide describes these stream settings and recommends testing configuration before going live.

- Make sure the correct OBS profile, scene collection, and scene are saved for the channel.
- Confirm the YouTube service and stream key in OBS. Treat the key as a secret; do not put it in a shortcut command or share it.
- Check that the computer can reach the internet after Windows restarts.
OBS’s Launch Parameters documentation lists --startstreaming as a supported automation parameter. Its Windows instructions say to add parameters after obs64.exe in the shortcut’s Target field. For scheduled or automated launches, set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe.

A startup shortcut is the simpler approach when OBS should launch as part of a user’s normal Windows sign-in. The precise Windows startup-folder UI can vary by Windows version and configuration; the essential setup is a shortcut that Windows launches after sign-in.

- Locate OBS. Find the OBS executable, normally named
obs64.exe. Use the installed executable rather than a shortcut to another shortcut. - Create a shortcut. Create a Windows shortcut to
obs64.exe, or edit an existing OBS shortcut. - Add the launch parameter. In the shortcut’s Properties, edit Target. Keep the executable path intact, then add a space and
--startstreamingafter the closing quotation mark. For example:"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Your installation path may differ. - Set the working directory. In the shortcut Properties, set Start in to the directory that contains
obs64.exe, as OBS directs for automated launches. - Put the shortcut in your sign-in startup workflow. Use the Windows startup-folder method appropriate to your Windows version so the shortcut runs when the intended user signs in.
- Test it. Sign out and back in, or perform a controlled reboot, then verify that OBS opens and YouTube reports the broadcast as live.
OBS also lists --minimize-to-tray as a launch parameter. Add it only if you want OBS minimized to the notification area and have enabled the system-tray icon; hiding OBS does not improve stream reliability.
Option 2: Launch OBS with Task Scheduler
Task Scheduler can provide more control over when an OBS launch is triggered than a basic startup shortcut. OBS forum participants have suggested it for restart recovery, but that is community guidance rather than an official Windows guarantee. Windows task settings and unattended sign-in behavior depend on the system configuration; do not assume a task will run before a user signs in unless you have configured and tested that behavior for your setup.

- Create a task to start OBS. In Windows Task Scheduler, create a task with a trigger appropriate to your recovery plan, such as at user sign-in. The exact labels and available trigger choices can differ by Windows version.
- Set the program. For the task action, point to the full path of
obs64.exe. - Pass the parameter separately. In the action’s argument field, enter
--startstreaming. Do not replace the executable path with the parameter. - Set the working directory. Set the task’s Start in or working-directory field to the folder containing
obs64.exe. OBS specifically calls out this setting for scheduled or automated launches. - Choose trigger and sign-in behavior deliberately. Configure the task for the user and timing you actually need, then confirm whether Windows requires that user to be signed in. Windows documentation does not establish universal unattended-account settings or exact current Windows UI paths.
- Run a controlled test. Restart Windows and verify the trigger, OBS launch, selected profile and scene, network connection, and YouTube’s live status separately.
Configure OBS reconnect, but verify the broadcast
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and review Automatically Reconnect. OBS identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting in its overview guide. Its presence is useful if a connection drops, but the available documentation does not establish one universal retry schedule or guarantee that every failure will recover.
There are distinct checkpoints: Windows must trigger the shortcut or task, OBS must open with the intended configuration, and OBS must connect successfully to YouTube. The OBS forum discussion about a 24/7 stream notes that after a power outage, OBS can start before network equipment is ready. If the first connection attempt happens too early, opening OBS is not proof that the stream recovered.

Test the full recovery path
- Choose a maintenance window and let viewers know if the test could interrupt the stream.
- Perform a controlled Windows restart with the startup shortcut or scheduled task enabled.
- Confirm that the intended Windows account signs in or that the configured task trigger runs.
- Confirm OBS opens with the right profile, scene collection, service, and stream key.
- Check that the network is available and OBS shows a successful streaming connection.
- Verify on YouTube that the broadcast is live, rather than relying only on OBS being open.
- If your outage scenario could leave the router or modem starting slowly, repeat the test with network readiness delayed, if you can do so safely.
OBS’s overview recommends testing before going live. A single successful reboot test does not establish that all update, sign-in, or network-failure scenarios will recover.

- OBS opens, but streaming does not start: Confirm the shortcut Target or task arguments include
--startstreamingafter the executable path, then verify the saved Stream settings and stream key. - The task runs but OBS cannot find its files or behaves differently: Set its working directory to the directory containing
obs64.exe, as OBS specifies for automated launches. - OBS starts before the internet is available: This can happen after a power outage when network equipment takes longer to recover. Test the delayed-network case; do not infer successful streaming from the app launch alone.
- The stream drops after starting: Review Settings > Advanced > Automatically Reconnect, then verify the result at YouTube. The setting is not a guarantee of recovery in every failure mode.
- The wrong scene or channel appears: Check the active OBS profile, scene collection, service, and stream key before the next reboot test.
- Nothing launches after an update: Check whether the configured startup or task trigger actually ran and whether the required user sign-in occurred. Windows update timing and unattended-task behavior are not guaranteed by OBS’s launch parameter.
What this method can and cannot automate
The launch parameter tells OBS to request streaming when it starts. It does not control when Windows installs updates or restarts, ensure a user has signed in, delay OBS until the network is ready, or prove that YouTube accepted the stream. Treat automatic relaunch and a confirmed live broadcast as separate outcomes, and retest after changing the OBS install, task, account, or network setup.
