In Streamlabs Talk Studio, choose Portrait Mode before you start a stream or recording. Streamlabs says you cannot switch between portrait and landscape after either has begun. Portrait Mode is a canvas layout setting; you do not need a new phone or webcam just to enable it.
Choose portrait or landscape before you start
Portrait is designed for a vertical viewing context, such as a mobile-first feed. Landscape suits a horizontal presentation. Consider how your host and guests will fit the frame, and whether viewers need displayed nametags: Streamlabs says nametags are not shown in portrait mode. Its Talk Studio help article describes portrait streams and recordings as 9:16.

How to turn on Portrait Mode in Talk Studio
- Open Talk Studio and add yourself to the main canvas. Set up the host and any other on-screen elements you need.
- Find the phone-shaped Portrait Mode icon among the video layouts, next to the layouts control.
- Select Portrait Mode before going live or recording. Check that the canvas is composed vertically and that the host and guests are framed as intended.
- Start the stream or recording only after checking the orientation. Streamlabs says the orientation cannot be switched after the session starts.
Streamlabs describes Portrait Mode as supported on all devices. Screen and video sharing are supported in the portrait workflow. Its help article says live streams record in a 9:16 ratio; displayed nametags do not appear in portrait mode.

Portrait streaming to Instagram from a browser
Streamlabs’ Instagram browser-streaming guide describes portrait output as 9:16 (1080 × 1920p). The guide, last updated August 11, 2025, states that Instagram Live eligibility requires a public account with at least 1,000 followers. Treat that as Streamlabs’ stated requirement, not a guarantee of current eligibility: check Instagram’s current rules and your account’s access before planning a broadcast.

Instagram destination setup can vary. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting page for custom RTMP says to select Portrait Mode before choosing Go Live, noting that the display otherwise defaults to vertical mode in that setup. The page also discusses third-party RTMP key arrangements and says Instagram does not officially support live broadcasting directly on its platform. Those details should not be taken as universal current behavior; destination availability and account settings can change. Confirm the options available in your Talk Studio account before going live.
Check your browser and upload connection
Streamlabs’ Talk Studio getting-started article lists a stable internet connection, Chrome or Safari, and at least 5 Mbps upload among its setup requirements. It gives these upload estimates:

These are Streamlabs’ stated requirements and recommendations, not a promise that a connection meeting them will produce a particular result. Connection stability and other conditions can still affect a session.
Troubleshoot portrait setup problems
- The stream or recording started in the wrong orientation: Talk Studio does not let you switch orientation after starting. End the session and select the intended layout before beginning a new one.
- The canvas is not vertical before you start: Find the phone-shaped Portrait Mode icon beside the layouts control, select it, and verify the canvas before going live or recording.
- Nametags are missing: Streamlabs says displayed nametags are not shown in portrait mode. Decide whether that matters to the presentation before starting.
- Instagram’s live option is unavailable: Check Instagram’s current eligibility rules and the access shown for your account. Streamlabs’ August 11, 2025 guide states a public account and 1,000 followers threshold, but platform rules and account access may change.
- A custom RTMP Instagram setup appears in the wrong mode: Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance says to press Portrait Mode before Go Live in that setup. Check the destination and options available in your own account rather than assuming all Instagram configurations behave the same way.
- The session is unstable: Check that you are using Chrome or Safari and compare your upload connection with Streamlabs’ resolution-specific estimates above. Meeting an estimate does not guarantee a stable stream.
