Start by copying the intended video’s link from YouTube and checking WhatsApp’s preview setting; if you own the video, you can update its thumbnail in YouTube Studio, but that does not guarantee WhatsApp will show it.
First, identify what is wrong
- No preview appears: Check whether your own WhatsApp account has disabled link previews. That setting affects links you send, not previews of links you receive.
- The preview appears but has the wrong image or title: The sender cannot select a WhatsApp card image for a YouTube page. If you own the video, you can change its YouTube thumbnail, but WhatsApp’s choice and refresh timing are not guaranteed.
- The preview points to the wrong video: Copy the link from the intended video’s own Share menu and verify the URL before sending.
Copy the intended video link from YouTube
- Open the video you want to share in YouTube.
- Choose Share, then Copy link. YouTube also offers an option to share from a particular start time. YouTube Help explains the sharing steps.
- Paste the copied link into the WhatsApp conversation. Check that the video title or URL is the one you intended before sending.
This ensures you share the right destination; it does not force WhatsApp to use a particular preview card.

Check WhatsApp’s link-preview setting if no card appears
WhatsApp’s documented setting is for suppressing previews, not for choosing the image or title in a preview that appears. On the sending account, open Settings (or tap your profile picture), then go to Privacy → Advanced. Turn Disable link previews off if it is enabled. WhatsApp says this setting prevents links sent by that account from generating previews; it is off by default and does not affect previews on links received. If you own the video, update its YouTube thumbnail
Eligible accounts can upload a custom thumbnail or choose a YouTube suggestion in YouTube Studio. YouTube notes that thumbnail changes may take time to appear on YouTube. Its instructions do not promise that WhatsApp will use the selected image or say when a WhatsApp preview will refresh. Follow YouTube Help’s custom-thumbnail instructions if you control the channel.

Why Open Graph tags are not a fix for a YouTube page
Open Graph metadata—such as og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url—is metadata a site owner puts in a page’s document head. The Open Graph protocol describes those fields, and WhatsApp’s developer documentation discusses previews for pages their owners control. You cannot add tags to YouTube’s page as an ordinary sender, so Open Graph advice for your own website will not change a YouTube page’s metadata.
What not to rely on
- Turning off Disable link previews addresses missing cards when the sender has suppressed them; it does not choose a different thumbnail for an existing card.
- Editing a YouTube thumbnail may change what YouTube displays, but no documented guarantee says it will change WhatsApp’s card immediately—or at all.
- The official material does not specify exactly which metadata WhatsApp selects for every YouTube URL, whether client or account variations alter the card, or a dependable cache-refresh interval. Resending the same link, changing URL parameters or repeatedly editing a thumbnail is therefore not a documented fix.
YouTube’s rules about clickable links in video descriptions or comments are separate from WhatsApp previews: URLs in long-form descriptions or comments can be clickable when advanced features are enabled, while URLs in Shorts descriptions or comments are not clickable.
