How to Stream Gameplay VODs to YouTube Live from a Raspberry Pi

Use a Raspberry Pi as a playback and encoder host for a YouTube Live gameplay VOD, with settings and checks to run before streaming.

You can use a Raspberry Pi to play a prerecorded gameplay video into a YouTube Live broadcast: the Pi reads the file, an encoder sends it to YouTube using the channel’s stream URL and private stream key, and viewers watch it as a live stream. The key limitation is that there is no verified, universal Raspberry Pi model or FFmpeg command for every VOD. First check the file, select an output profile, and test the complete workload on your Pi before relying on it.

How the Raspberry Pi-to-YouTube setup works

The path is gameplay VOD file → playback and encoding on the Pi → YouTube Live ingest → live broadcast. The Pi is not capturing gameplay live; it is sending an existing recording to YouTube as a live feed. YouTube requires an encoder connection, a stream server address, and a stream key.

This is a practical DIY route when you want the Pi itself to handle playback and streaming. Raspberry Pi documentation describes FFmpeg/libav network streaming support in its camera workflow, but that does not certify every Pi and FFmpeg build for relaying arbitrary gameplay files. Treat the actual video, audio, model, software, and upload connection as a combined workload to verify.

Before you configure the encoder

Enable YouTube Live in advance

Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the start of an event. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and locate its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, shell history, or support post. YouTube’s encoder setup and API documentation describe the ingest address and stream name/key, which some encoders request separately and others combine.

Inspect the VOD and the Pi

Check the file’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, duration, and whether it contains audio. Decide whether the selected encoder can pass its existing streams through or whether it must transcode them. A file that plays locally is not automatically compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest profile, and copying its streams without checking is not a safe assumption.

Also identify the Pi model, operating system, installed FFmpeg build, available storage, and cooling conditions. Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation describes hardware H.264 encoding when available and an FFmpeg/libav backend for encoding audio and video and saving or streaming output over a network. Those are camera-workflow capabilities, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg workload can use the same acceleration.

The Raspberry Pi documentation says Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Its camera stack’s --low-latency option can reduce encoding latency, with a trade-off in coding efficiency and potentially maximum frame rate; the documentation says it can still achieve 1080p30 in that camera-encoding context. That does not establish Pi 5 as a universal or optimal choice for transcoding gameplay VODs. Playback decoding, audio handling, output profile, cooling, and software build all affect the result. The reviewed documentation establishes no Pi-specific VOD-relay benchmark or universally best model.

Choose a YouTube ingest profile

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use settings the Pi and your upload connection can sustain rather than treating a platform recommendation as a hardware guarantee.

Output profile YouTube-recommended video bitrate YouTube minimum video bitrate
720p30 H.264 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p60 H.264 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p30 H.264 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p60 H.264 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps 4 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s current ingest recommendations, not measured Raspberry Pi performance or a promise that a home connection can sustain the rate. Check upload speed and test at the intended resolution and frame rate. A conservative starting point is 720p30; move to 1080p30 or a higher frame rate only if testing shows that the Pi and connection maintain it without overload or stream-health problems.

Set up and test the broadcast

  1. Prepare the event. In YouTube Studio, enable Live if needed and create or select the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder you intend to use. Choose RTMPS if the encoder offers it, and do not expose the key.
  2. Configure playback and encoding. Select the gameplay file as the source. Configure a YouTube-compatible video codec, constant bitrate, the tested resolution and frame rate, a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Set the video bitrate with YouTube’s table and the tested upload capacity in mind.
  3. Do not assume a one-line FFmpeg recipe. The required FFmpeg arguments depend on the file’s streams, whether they can be passed through or need encoding, the installed FFmpeg build, and the output profile. The official sources do not provide a Pi-specific command for that file-dependent decision. If using a command-line encoder, confirm its input and output mapping and options against the local FFmpeg build, use placeholders while preparing it, and supply the YouTube ingest address and private key only in a secure manner.
  4. Run a representative test. Start the encoder with gameplay that includes typical movement and its expected audio. Watch the Pi for dropped frames or overload and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before a live stream. If the Pi or connection cannot sustain the profile, lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again.
  5. Start the planned broadcast. Once the representative test is stable, start the intended stream from the encoder and monitor stream health. The test should include audio and motion; a static image alone will not reveal all playback or encoding problems.
  6. End and verify the archive. Stop sending from the encoder to end the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; after processing, check the channel’s Live tab in YouTube Studio.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube will not accept the stream: verify that Live is enabled, that you selected the intended stream, and that the encoder has the correct server address and stream key. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may still be pending.
  • The stream starts but reports poor health or drops frames: compare the configured bitrate with actual upload capacity, then reduce the output profile and retest. Check whether the Pi is overloaded; meeting a nominal system requirement does not prove that a particular resolution, frame rate, and encoding workload will run reliably.
  • Video is missing, unsupported, or unstable: re-check the VOD’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoder output. Determine whether the encoder is passing through compatible streams or transcoding them; do not assume direct copying will match YouTube’s accepted profile.
  • Audio is absent or out of sync: confirm that the VOD has an audio stream, that the encoder maps it, and that the output uses AAC or MP3. Test the exact file and software build rather than relying on a short or silent sample.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: treat it as compromised and replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again. Do not repost the replacement in a public command, screenshot, or support message.
