For a prerecorded program sent through an encoder to YouTube Live, use YouTube’s live ingest bitrate recommendations—not its separate settings for video files uploaded to YouTube. Choose the target for your ingest codec, resolution and frame rate, then confirm your upload connection can sustain it with headroom. For H.264, the starting points include 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 8 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60.
Use the live ingest table for a live feed
A prerecorded video becomes a live ingest feed when an encoder plays it and sends it to YouTube Live. Select bitrate settings for that live workflow. YouTube’s recommendations for encoding a file before uploading it are a different table for a different process; for example, the upload-file recommendation for H.264 at 1080p is not the live encoder target.

The encoder bitrate is the feed sent to YouTube, not a promise that every viewer will receive video at that bitrate. YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for playback. The recommendations below are official live ingest starting points, not a special 24/7 preset.

Recommended live bitrate by resolution, frame rate and codec
Use the row matching the video resolution and frame rate you intend to send. The two codec columns differ, so make sure you know whether your encoder is sending H.264 or AV1/H.265.

YouTube also publishes minimum settings; those are floors, not the recommended targets in the table. Its minimums range from 0.4 Mbps for H.264 at 480p30 to 14 Mbps at 2160p60, and from 0.3 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 360p30 or 480p30 to 10 Mbps at 2160p60. When your connection can reliably support it, use the recommended target rather than treating a minimum as the desired quality setting.
Choose a target that your setup can sustain
Match the source and output
Start with the resolution and frame rate you actually plan to send. Sending a 1080p30 program at a 1080p60 setting does not create additional source detail; it can increase bandwidth use without improving the original footage. YouTube’s guidance is to choose the highest resolution and bitrate your setup supports, but the network must be able to hold that rate steadily.

Confirm the ingest codec
H.264 and AV1/H.265 have different recommended bitrates at the same resolution and frame rate. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 as supported video codecs. Use the column for the codec actually selected in your encoder, rather than assuming the H.264 value applies to every codec.
Consider the footage, then test it
Motion and image detail can affect how a particular encoder looks at a given bitrate. YouTube’s table does not specify a bitrate discount for low-motion footage, so do not apply an arbitrary reduction just because the program is prerecorded. Test a representative segment: include the most detailed or fast-moving scenes, as well as ordinary material from the loop.

Leave upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube Help says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Treat that as operational guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or a formula specific to 24/7 broadcasts.
- Measure under realistic conditions. Check outbound upload capacity when the connection is being used as it will be during the stream, not only under ideal conditions.
- Reserve the headroom. As a practical application of YouTube’s 20% recommendation, keep the stream’s total bitrate below the capacity available to it, with room for normal variation.
- Account for other traffic. Other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. If more than one live output uses the connection, count their combined bitrates.
- Watch for sustained stability. A brief speed-test result does not establish that an upload link will remain steady all day. Test the complete playback-to-encoder-to-network chain over a representative period and monitor stream health once live.
Set the encoder and validate the stream
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not longer than four seconds). For audio, it recommends AAC or MP3. RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP and is YouTube’s recommended protocol.

- Integrated Graphics: AMD Radeon Vega Graphics (CPU Integration) enables you to play 1080P mainstream games at quality frame rates
- Memory and Storage: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM paired with 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD for fast multitasking and quick data access
- Power Supply: 550W 80PLUS Bronze certified power supply ensures stable and energy-efficient operation
- Choose the output format. Set resolution, frame rate and codec to match the row you selected in the live ingest table.
- Set video bitrate and rate control. Enter the recommended bitrate for that codec and format, and use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Set keyframes and audio. Use a two-second keyframe interval, never exceeding four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio.
- Connect using RTMPS where available. Use the stream key and ingest details supplied for your YouTube Live stream; keep the key private.
- Test before the broadcast. YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the planned stream. Check that playback, audio, and stream health are sound before relying on the setup.
- Monitor messages and stream health. Review YouTube’s warnings during operation and correct bitrate or connection problems rather than assuming an initially successful connection will remain healthy.
Latency is a separate choice from bitrate. YouTube notes that lower latency can lead to more playback buffering and is less important when there is no audience interaction. A prerecorded continuous program may not need the lowest latency option; changing latency does not change the bitrate recommendation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon bitrate and reliability problems
Stream health reports insufficient or unstable bandwidth
The target may be too close to the upload connection’s real capacity, or other network use may be competing with the encoder. Recheck sustained outbound capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, reduce the target to a supported resolution or bitrate if necessary, and retest.

The selected codec and table column do not match
Using the H.264 recommendation for an AV1 or H.265 feed (or vice versa) means you are not following the recommendation for the codec being sent. Verify the encoder’s actual output codec and use the corresponding column.
The picture looks poor despite using the recommended number
Confirm that the source itself has the resolution and frame rate you selected, then inspect representative high-motion and detailed segments. The table is an ingest recommendation, not a guarantee of a particular visual result for every source or encoder.
The feed breaks during an extended run
A bitrate setting alone cannot prevent interruptions. Check the full playback, encoder and network chain, review YouTube’s stream-health messages, and test over a representative period. The cited YouTube guidance recommends testing and monitoring; it does not specify a separate 24/7 bitrate formula or promise uninterrupted operation.
