YouTube delivers the stream to viewers; the VPS runs the playback and encoding process. A still cover image with stereo music is a relatively light workload, but the right VPS size depends on your files, output settings and provider—test before committing to a plan.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled.
- A Linux VPS with reliable sustained outbound connectivity and enough storage and transfer allowance for your media and stream.
- FFmpeg, which reads, encodes and sends the audio/video stream.
- Marathi music and visual assets you own or are properly licensed to stream and archive in the relevant territories.
- A playlist or other playback plan, plus a way to supervise and restart the FFmpeg process.
YouTube does not specify a universal CPU, RAM or VPS price for this workload. Benchmark your actual files and settings, and check the provider’s resource limits, bandwidth allowance and acceptable-use rules before choosing a plan.

Clear music and visual rights first
Make sure your permissions cover livestreaming and any archive, territories where the stream may be available, and the visuals as well as the music. Keep written evidence of your rights. A license does not guarantee that YouTube’s automated checks will let a broadcast continue: YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it. If you have permission for third-party music, ask the rights owner to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist before a long test. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube reviews monetization at the channel level, including for livestreams; permission to play music does not itself make a channel eligible for the YouTube Partner Program. Its policy says collections of songs from different artists may fail reused-content review even when the creator has permission. Original music, curation, commentary, presentation or other meaningful viewer value may help distinguish a channel, but YouTube decides eligibility. Its July 15, 2025 policy update describes repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content.” Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Enable YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Create or schedule a live stream in Studio and locate its stream settings. Copy the server/ingest URL and stream key for the encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Store it in a protected configuration or secret store on the VPS; do not put it in a public script or repository, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Use RTMPS as the starting protocol for an ordinary software-encoder stream. YouTube recommends it, and it encrypts the ingest connection. HLS and DASH support other codecs and higher-resolution cases, but their segment-based delivery has greater latency in YouTube’s protocol comparison.
Choose a starting output and test it
For a first representative test, use H.264 video at 720p30 with constant bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval and 6 Mbps video bitrate. The 6 Mbps figure is YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p30, not a VPS bandwidth plan or a guarantee of quality. Allow additional network headroom for audio, protocol overhead and other traffic, then check the VPS provider’s sustained outbound capacity and transfer limit. YouTube lists current encoder guidance in its recommended live encoder settings.
Use AAC or MP3 audio and test with the actual music and visual you plan to broadcast. If a static image or subtle visual is enough, a higher resolution may add encoding and bandwidth cost without making the listening experience better. Do not assume a lower bitrate or smaller VPS is suitable without checking YouTube’s stream-health feedback and the result on your own files.

Prepare the VPS and media
- Choose a Linux VPS plan only after checking its CPU, memory, storage, sustained outbound bandwidth or transfer allowance, pricing, and rules for continuous streaming. There is no official one-size-fits-all specification for this job.
- Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source for your distribution. The FFmpeg documentation describes its command-line options; the exact command depends on the media formats, whether re-encoding is needed and how you want to display the visual.
- Upload the audio and visual assets to the VPS, or attach storage that remains available to the process. Check available disk space and make a playlist in the order you want tracks to play.
- Confirm that the playlist handles the end of its sequence as intended. Test transitions for gaps, abrupt cuts, silence and mismatched levels; check the output rather than assuming files will loop cleanly.
- Keep a copy of source media and rights records outside the VPS. A VPS disk is not, by itself, a backup plan.
Send a short test stream with FFmpeg
Build the FFmpeg command around your media rather than copying a command that assumes different filenames, codecs or playlist behavior. It must read the intended playlist, produce the chosen audio/video format and settings, and send the output to the YouTube RTMPS ingest URL with the stream key. Keep the key out of shell history, process listings where possible, and logs; use a protected environment or secret mechanism appropriate to your setup.
- Start with a short private or unlisted test in YouTube Studio, using the same playlist, audio, visual and output settings intended for the continuous broadcast.
- Check Studio’s stream-health feedback, confirm that picture and audio arrive, and listen for continuity across track and playlist transitions.
- Watch VPS CPU and memory use while the encoder runs. Check storage, outbound connectivity and the plan’s transfer allowance as well.
- Adjust resolution, encoding settings or media handling if the process struggles. Repeat the test after material changes; a successful short test is useful evidence, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.
FFmpeg is the encoder and muxer; the VPS is the always-on host. YouTube’s encoder recommendations do not prescribe a universal VPS tier, and no configuration can guarantee an uninterrupted stream.

Keep the stream supervised
Run FFmpeg under a service manager or equivalent process supervisor configured to restart it after a process failure. Add useful logs, a basic health check and an alert for failures. A supervisor can detect and restart some local process problems; it cannot prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy, visible stream.

- Check CPU, memory, disk space and outbound connectivity during operation.
- Test recovery after a VPS reboot and after stopping the encoder, so you know whether the service restarts and reconnects as intended.
- Plan maintenance and a recovery procedure. Keep the stream key private and ensure the service can access it without exposing it in logs.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube automatically archives livestreams shorter than 12 hours. Do not rely on a longer continuous broadcast becoming one complete archived video. If retaining a full program matters, keep your own recording or schedule shorter sessions that fit under the threshold, and check the resulting archives in Studio.
