How to Stream an Esports Tournament with Multiple Cameras

A practical plan for connecting gameplay and camera feeds, switching scenes, managing program audio, and testing an esports tournament stream.

To stream an esports tournament with multiple cameras, plan how each gameplay and camera feed enters your production, switch among them in OBS or a hardware switcher, use one deliberate program-audio path, and test the complete setup before event day. A switcher is optional: a small production can use USB cameras and OBS, while multiple HDMI sources or a dedicated switching operator may justify a hardware switcher.

Plan the views before choosing equipment

Start with the shots the audience needs, then build the source list around them. Depending on the game and event, that list might include:

  • Gameplay capture or an in-game observer feed.
  • A caster or analyst camera.
  • Player or team cameras, if they are available and useful.
  • A venue-wide shot that can serve as a fallback.
  • Graphics, such as score or match information, and any remote feeds.

Give every source one job and a clear label, such as “game observer,” “casters,” or “team wide.” The operator can then choose the next shot according to what viewers need to see, rather than searching through ambiguously named inputs. How many player views are possible, whether a game offers a dedicated observer mode, and whether an event can use player feeds all depend on the game and event permissions; there is no universal camera count or feed requirement.

Choose how to connect and switch the feeds

Approach Typical fit Tradeoff How switching works
USB cameras with OBS Small, desk-based, or otherwise low-complexity production USB bandwidth and computer resources may constrain simultaneous active feeds. Switch between sources and layouts in software; a hardware switcher is not required.
HDMI cameras with capture devices or a switcher Event production with several HDMI sources or a dedicated operator Requires additional hardware, cabling, and setup. A hardware switcher can provide physical switching and monitoring; capture devices can also bring HDMI feeds into production software.
Network or NDI cameras with compatible production software A rig with suitable local network infrastructure Network performance becomes part of the reliability plan. Video travels over the local network and is switched in compatible software or hardware.

These are practical distinctions described in the OBSBOT manufacturer guide, not independent performance tests. With USB cameras, check whether the computer and USB controller can handle the number of active sources. For HDMI cameras, verify that each capture device or switcher supports the cameras’ formats and the output you intend to use. For network feeds, a wired Ethernet connection may be a useful reliability choice where available, but the network still needs to be suitable for the traffic.

One optional hardware example is the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Pro. Check current model specifications against your actual inputs, formats, and camera count before choosing it; no single switcher suits every rig. A smaller setup may be adequately served by OBS alone.

Build scenes and a manageable switching plan

In OBS, add the connected cameras and gameplay feed as sources, then arrange them into scenes that match the shots your show needs. Useful layouts may include a main game view, caster view, picture-in-picture, split screen, and a safe wide shot. OBS supports scene-based switching, so the operator can move between prepared layouts instead of rebuilding each shot live.

Use preview/program or multiview monitoring when your software or switcher provides it: preview the next shot before taking it to the audience. Keep the switching plan simple enough to follow under pressure. If more than one person is operating the show, agree who calls shots and who controls switching or graphics; the necessary staffing depends on the production.

Match frame rates and, where practical, resolution and aspect ratio across feeds. Keep exposure and white balance consistent between cameras so that a cut does not create a distracting change in brightness or color. vMix documentation describes a program output, multiview layouts, and configurable outputs, but available functionality varies by edition; confirm that the edition you use includes the outputs you need in the vMix documentation.

Make audio and synchronization intentional

Choose one primary microphone or mixer bus for the program. Do not automatically combine every camera microphone: disable irrelevant camera audio, set the program levels, and check for audio/video offset. Before the show, make a simple synchronization check on every active angle so that cuts do not introduce a noticeable mismatch.

Connect the program to YouTube and test it

  1. Prepare the YouTube channel in advance. First-time live activation can take time, so confirm access and complete setup before event day. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the live-stream setup.
  2. Enter the stream destination in the encoder. Put the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder or production software. YouTube describes this as the step to start streaming with an encoder.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat the stream key as a credential for the channel’s live feed; do not show it in a screen share or give it to people who do not need it.
  4. Test the whole workflow before the event. Where supported, use a private or unlisted test stream. Check each source, transitions, audio level and sync, platform ingest, dropped frames, and the fallback wide shot. A checklist is not evidence that a particular rig is reliable; test the rig you will actually use.

If you use SRT between an encoder and receiver, OBS documents adding SRT as a media source or custom stream destination. Its guide gives a default latency of 120 ms and says latency should be at least 2.5 times the network round-trip time. Treat that as configuration guidance, not a performance guarantee for your network. See the OBS SRT guide.

Copyright and stream-content checks

Before the tournament, confirm that you have permission to broadcast the game feed, event footage, player cameras, music, and any other third-party material in your program. A live test can reveal technical problems, but it does not establish that the content is cleared for broadcast. YouTube’s live setup requirements and any rights or event permissions are separate questions; check them for the specific channel, game, and event.

Keep camera switching separate from cloud distribution

A cloud multistreaming service can distribute a finished program feed to more than one platform, but it does not decide which camera view is on screen. For example, Castr describes receiving a completed OBS, vMix, or hardware-encoder feed for distribution to Twitch and YouTube. You still need to produce and switch the program feed first. See Castr’s Twitch and YouTube workflow.

Troubleshooting common production problems

  • A camera does not appear: Check its connection and whether the capture device or software recognizes its input. If using several USB feeds, check whether the computer and USB controller can handle them simultaneously.
  • The picture changes size, color, or motion at a cut: Match frame rates and, where practical, resolution and aspect ratio. Review camera exposure and white balance for consistency.
  • Audio drops, doubles, or sounds out of sync: Confirm the intended primary microphone or mixer bus is active, disable unnecessary camera audio, and check levels and synchronization on every active angle.
  • The wrong shot goes live: Use clear source labels, prepare the main layouts in advance, and preview the next shot before switching. Keep the wide shot ready as a fallback.
  • The encoder does not connect to YouTube: Verify that the YouTube Live server URL and stream key are entered in the encoder and that the channel has live access. Check the connection in a test stream before the event.
  • An SRT contribution feed has unsuitable delay: Check the network round-trip time and adjust SRT latency in line with OBS’s guidance; the documented default is not a guarantee for a particular link.
  • The setup works in rehearsal but fails during the show: Rehearse with the same sources and production path planned for the event, including transitions, audio, ingest, dropped-frame checks, and the fallback shot.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded program that should keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a separate option from the tournament’s live camera switching: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, rather than switching live camera feeds. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
