You can test up to three title options for an eligible video in YouTube Studio on a computer. Open the video, select A/B testing in the Title box, choose Title only (or another test type), enter the alternatives and select Done. YouTube compares performance using watch time—not click-through rate alone. The feature requires advanced features and is not available for every video format or audience setting.
Check whether your video can be tested
YouTube’s current Help guidance, reviewed on October 3, 2026, describes this as a desktop-only Studio feature. Before preparing alternatives, check that advanced features are enabled and that the video’s format and audience settings are eligible. YouTube’s eligibility and interface can change; consult its official A/B testing help page if the control is missing.

- Eligible: standard long-form videos and archived live streams.
- Not eligible in their current formats: Shorts, scheduled live streams and Premieres. A Premiere may become eligible after it ends and converts to a long-form video.
- Not eligible: videos marked Made for Kids, mature-audience videos and private videos.
YouTube warns that incorrectly failing to mark age-restricted content when using the tool can result in losing access to the feature. Do not change an audience or age setting merely to make a video eligible; use the correct classification.

Open the test in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, open the video. For a new upload, start with Create and upload the video. For an existing upload, open Content and select the video.
- Find A/B testing. Select A/B testing in the Title box, or use the control under Thumbnail.
- Choose what to compare. Select Title only, Thumbnail only or Title and thumbnail.
- Enter the alternatives. Add up to three options for the selected test. For a title-only test, keep the thumbnail unchanged so the comparison isolates title variations.
- Start the test. Select Done. Check the video’s Details page or Analytics under the Reach tab to review results or manage an active test.
If you change the tested title or thumbnail while the test is running, YouTube says the test stops automatically. To compare again, set up and start a new test.

Choose alternatives that can teach you something
Use options that express meaningfully different ways of presenting the video, while accurately describing what viewers will see. YouTube notes that very similar variations may not create enough difference to identify a winner and can take longer to resolve. It also recommends trying older videos first to reduce the possible impact of testing on overall channel views.
- Keep the promise truthful: do not imply a result, topic or event the video does not deliver.
- Change the framing or emphasis between alternatives rather than making only a cosmetic edit.
- For a title-only test, vary titles while leaving the thumbnail alone; for a combined test, remember that both elements vary together.
- Do not assume every test will declare a winner. Low impressions may leave YouTube without enough evidence to distinguish the options.
How long a test takes
YouTube says a test may take a few days and should complete within two weeks. That is guidance, not a fixed deadline for every video. The number of impressions, how recently the video was published and other factors affect how quickly results become clear. Avoid changing the tested title or thumbnail while waiting, because doing so stops the run.

Read the result using YouTube’s objective
The test is designed to select for watch-time performance, not the highest click-through rate in isolation. YouTube’s stated reasoning is that a title and thumbnail should help viewers understand a video and avoid attracting clicks that waste their time. A title that earns clicks but does not lead to sustained viewing may therefore not be selected.

Use the outcome as evidence about these options and this audience during this run, not as a universal ranking of wording. YouTube notes that results can vary across runs as real-world data and audience composition change.

YouTube describes its own test as concurrent: viewers see variants during the same period. It says third-party tests may instead be sequential and may optimize for click-through rate alone, so their result can differ from a native test based on watch time. This is YouTube’s description of the distinction, not an independent evaluation of every outside tool. If your goal is to understand the result YouTube will use for its native feature, use Studio’s test and interpret its watch-time outcome.

Troubleshooting a missing or stopped test
- You cannot find A/B testing: use YouTube Studio on a computer, confirm advanced features are enabled, and check whether the video’s format and audience settings meet the eligibility rules.
- The video is a Short, scheduled live stream or active Premiere: these formats are not eligible as listed. An ended Premiere may become eligible after it converts to a long-form video; archived live streams can be tested.
- The test stopped: check whether the title or thumbnail was edited during the run. If so, restart the test after choosing the options you want to compare.
- The result is inconclusive or takes longer than expected: YouTube says insufficient impressions or very similar options can prevent a clear result. Review the Reach tab or Details page; there is no guaranteed completion time for an individual test.
- The options performed the same: treat that as a possible outcome, not a tool failure. If no option is identified as the winner, YouTube uses the first submitted option, and you may make a manual choice afterward.
