How to Rotate Videos in a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream Without Restarting It

To change videos without restarting a 24/7 YouTube live stream, switch the active source in the software or hardware encoder sending your feed. Keep the encoder connected to YouTube, and do not select Stop Streaming or End Stream for a content-only change. Check the new video and audio in the encoder output and YouTube preview; whether the switch is seamless depends on your specific setup, so rehearse it first.

Where to change the video

YouTube receives a live feed from your encoder. The encoder—software or standalone hardware—sends that feed using YouTube’s server URL and stream key, so the encoder or its playout system is where you change the program content. YouTube’s documentation describes setting up that connection, but does not provide a universal Studio command for replacing media inside every third-party encoder. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guide.

The method below applies to an encoder-based stream. YouTube also supports webcam and mobile streaming, but those workflows may not offer the same source or playlist controls.

Switch the video while keeping the stream connected

  1. Identify the active encoder. Find the software or hardware that is currently sending the video to YouTube. Confirm it is connected with the intended YouTube server URL and stream key.
  2. Prepare the replacement source. Add or cue the next video in the encoder or playout system using that product’s own controls. Source, scene and playlist steps vary by product and version; check its current documentation rather than assuming a particular menu name.
  3. Switch the encoder’s program output. Make the replacement source active in the encoder while leaving its YouTube connection running. Do not use the encoder’s stop control or YouTube’s End Stream control to make a content-only change. YouTube documents those as ways to stop or end a stream; its live stream settings guide explains the relevant stream controls.
  4. Verify the outgoing feed. Check that the intended picture and audio are present in the encoder’s program output and in YouTube’s preview. If the replacement is black, silent or out of sync, correct it in the encoder before leaving the stream unattended.
  5. Rehearse before relying on it. Test the change with your exact encoder, sources and YouTube setup. YouTube’s documented feed architecture supports changing content at the encoder, but does not guarantee that every source switch will be seamless.

Keep the stream key safe

A stream key allows your encoder to send a feed to the corresponding YouTube stream. Treat it like a credential and do not publish or share it. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the encoder with the new key; otherwise it may no longer be able to send the feed. YouTube’s stream settings documentation covers reusable stream settings and keys.

Choose a workflow for frequent changes

For an occasional change, using the encoder already sending your stream is the simplest route and requires no additional equipment. If you need to rotate many prerecorded videos or make changes without an operator at the encoder, compare tools based on the capabilities your workflow needs:

  • Can you edit a playlist while it is live?
  • Does it support scheduling, monitoring and alerts?
  • What happens after a connection loss, and how does recovery work?
  • Does it run locally or in the cloud, and what does that mean for the equipment and connection you must keep available?
  • What is the total cost for your intended schedule?

These are comparison questions, not guarantees about any particular tool. YouTube’s encoder guide lists optional tools for different workflows, including Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, AJA HELO Plus for scheduled prerecorded-media playback, and Elgato Stream Deck as a programmable controller for live-production shortcuts. None is required just to change a source in an encoder that is already working.
