How to Stream a VLC Playlist to YouTube Live from a Raspberry Pi

VLC can sequence playlist items on a Raspberry Pi, but its documented HTTP broadcast is not a verified direct YouTube connection. Here’s how to prepare the pieces and test an RTMPS-compatible encoder setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can use VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) to sequence playlist items on a Raspberry Pi, and YouTube Live can receive an encoder feed over RTMPS. But the official documentation describes those as separate capabilities: VLC’s playlist example broadcasts over HTTP to a local or network client, while YouTube requires a compatible encoder configured with its RTMPS URL and stream key. It does not verify that a Raspberry Pi VLC build can send a VLM playlist directly to YouTube. The steps below prepare and test the documented pieces, then explain where you must verify compatibility for your chosen setup.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS. Desktop includes VLC; Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not include it by default.
  • The media files you want to play and a playlist you have tested locally.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and access to its Live Control Room.
  • An encoder configuration that can accept the playlist output and send it to YouTube over RTMPS. The compatibility of any particular bridge, Pi model, and software combination must be checked on that setup.

The available official documentation does not establish a recommended Pi model, encoding capacity, target bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or guaranteed 24/7 reliability for this workflow. Do not assume a board can transcode your files simply because it can play them.

1. Install VLC and test your files on the Pi

On Raspberry Pi OS Desktop

VLC is included with Raspberry Pi OS Desktop. Open VLC and play each media file you plan to use. Confirm the files are accessible and play as expected before configuring a live stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Raspberry Pi OS Lite

Install the documented VLC packages:

sudo apt install --no-install-recommends vlc-bin vlc-plugin-base

Use cvlc for command-line playback without a graphical interface. Raspberry Pi documentation notes that VLC uses hardware acceleration in Raspberry Pi OS, but that fact alone does not show that a specific Pi can transcode a playlist or deliver a live RTMPS stream at a particular quality. See the Raspberry Pi OS audio and video documentation.

2. Understand what VLC’s VLM playlist example does

VLC’s VLM feature can place multiple inputs on one broadcast channel. In VideoLAN’s documented example, the channel outputs an HTTP MPEG transport stream, uses sout-keep to keep the output from breaking between playlist items, and sets a caching option. The example configuration is:

new channel_1 broadcast enabled
setup channel_1 input "file:///path/to/one.mp3"
setup channel_1 input "file:///path/to/two.mp3"
setup channel_1 output #http{mux=ts,dst=:8090/stream}
setup channel_1 option sout-keep
setup channel_1 option file-caching=1000
control channel_1 play

Save the configuration as playlist.vlm and run the documented command:

vlc --vlm-conf=playlist.vlm

A client on the same network can connect to http://<Pi-address>:8090/stream. Replace <Pi-address> with the Pi’s address on your network. This is a VLC HTTP broadcast example—not a YouTube ingestion address, and not a command proven to deliver a playlist directly to YouTube. Read VideoLAN’s VLM playlist example and its stream-output introduction for the documented behavior.

3. Get YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
  2. Open the stream settings. Use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS stream URL, then copy it into an encoder that supports YouTube’s RTMPS ingest.
  3. Copy the stream key into that encoder’s stream-key field. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in a public post, shared configuration, or screenshot.
  4. Start with a private or otherwise non-public test if you need to check the feed before an event.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Its developer guide specifies port 443 and explains that the server hostname is needed for TLS SNI authentication. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for the exact URL and key shown in your Live Control Room; do not substitute VLC’s local HTTP URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS help page and the RTMPS ingestion guide.

4. Connect the playlist output to a compatible encoder

The remaining step is setup-dependent. You need an encoder arrangement that can take the VLC playlist output as an input and send a valid feed to YouTube using RTMPS. The cited VLC and YouTube documentation does not verify a particular intermediate handoff—such as local HTTP or UDP—or a specific bridge encoder on a Raspberry Pi. Treat any such arrangement as a candidate configuration until you confirm that your selected software accepts the input format, supports RTMPS, and works on your Pi.

Before relying on it, test the complete chain: playlist item changes, continuous output between items, encoder connection, and the resulting stream in YouTube Live Control Room. If the encoder needs to transcode, check that the Pi and chosen software can handle the workload; the documentation cited here does not establish performance for a board or quality setting.

5. Troubleshoot connection and playlist problems

Symptom What to check
YouTube does not connect, or reports an SSL error Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS, that you used the RTMPS URL rather than an RTMP or local VLC URL, and that the URL and host are copied correctly. YouTube’s guidance points to port 443 when needed; preserve the hostname required for TLS SNI.
The encoder cannot open the VLC output Check that the VLM channel is running, the Pi address and port are reachable from the encoder, and the encoder accepts the output format. The documented http://<Pi-address>:8090/stream address is for a client on the network, not YouTube Live.
Playback works, but live output fails or stutters Local playback does not establish that the Pi can transcode or sustain the complete live workflow. Check the selected encoder’s input and processing requirements on the actual board and software versions; no model-specific capacity is established by the cited documentation.
The stream key has been exposed Keep the key private and replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-stream controls if you believe someone else can use it.

Could HLS be an alternative?

YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for encoders that support it, including some cases involving HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. HLS requires TS segments 1–4 seconds long, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. This is an alternative protocol for a compatible encoder, not evidence that VLC on Raspberry Pi supports HLS for this playlist workflow. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the aim is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel without maintaining a Raspberry Pi and encoder chain, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running with your computer off and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card.
