How to Automate 1Password Login in a Browser

Use 1Password’s browser extension to fill saved website logins, connect it to the desktop app for easier unlocking, or use the CLI for scripts.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For website sign-ins, install the 1Password browser extension, save a Login item, then select 1Password’s sign-in prompt—or choose the saved item and use Open & Fill. If you mean unlocking the extension when you unlock the desktop app, connect the two in their settings. Neither method turns off auto-lock or makes your vault stay unlocked indefinitely.

For scripts that need secrets, use 1Password CLI rather than automating a person’s browser login. These are three separate workflows with different security boundaries.

Choose the kind of automation you need

Goal Use What it does
Sign in to websites as a person Browser extension autofill Fills a saved Login item on the site’s sign-in page; some sites sign you in after you select the prompt.
Reduce repeated extension unlocking Desktop-app integration Lets the browser extension unlock when you unlock the 1Password desktop app, where supported and enabled.
Supply secrets to a script or developer command 1Password CLI Loads secrets for command-line workflows; it does not automate a human browser session.

For routine website sign-ins, start with the browser extension workflow below.

Set up autofill for website sign-ins

  1. Install the 1Password extension for your browser and open it. Unlock 1Password in the browser.

1Password’s walkthrough covers saving and filling credentials in the browser: Save and fill passwords in your browser.

Let the desktop app unlock the browser extension

This optional connection is useful if you already unlock the desktop app and want the extension to follow that unlock. It is different from autofilling a website password. The connection article names Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Safari as supported browsers for this integration; availability can depend on the operating system and setup.

  1. Update the 1Password desktop app, browser extension, and browser.

  2. In the desktop app, enable Connect with 1Password in the browser.

  3. In the browser extension settings, enable Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app.

  4. Restart the desktop app and browser after changing the settings, then unlock the desktop app and check whether the extension unlocks too.

For the exact platform-specific steps, see 1Password’s connection troubleshooting guide.

Understand auto-lock and organization controls

Connecting the app and extension does not disable the vault’s security. The extension has its own unlock and auto-lock behavior. 1Password states: “When you quit your browser, 1Password will always lock.” You can configure idle and device-sleep behavior, but available settings may be affected by SSO and organization policy. See Manage your unlock and auto-lock settings.

Signing in with SSO or adding a browser

If your organization uses Unlock with SSO, choose your identity provider’s sign-in option in the browser extension. When you add a new browser or device, 1Password may ask you to approve it from an already linked app or browser and enter a verification code. Do not share that code; 1Password says its employees will never ask you for it. Follow the relevant instructions for SSO sign-in and linking apps and browsers.

For scripts, use 1Password CLI

If your goal is to inject credentials into a build, script, or developer command, use the CLI secret-loading methods rather than trying to drive the browser extension’s interactive sign-in. 1Password documents op run, op read, op inject, and shell plugins for these workflows. Use service accounts with access limited to the vaults the workload needs. The documentation also describes a beta Environment capability for op run; check its stated beta CLI version requirement before relying on that capability in production. Details: Load secrets into scripts.

Troubleshoot when it does not work

Or skip the browser setup

For website screenshots—not 1Password login automation—ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It does not sign in to 1Password or replace the workflows above. Its API can return an image or PDF, and its browser automation features include cookie-banner handling and MCP tools for AI agents.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
