You can stream a prepared Tamil devotional playlist to YouTube Live from a Linux VPS by sending a compatible media file to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest with FFmpeg. A devotional subject does not make a recording free to rebroadcast. Check rights for each recording, performance, arrangement, and image, and confirm that the permission covers live streaming and any archived replay in the territories where viewers may watch. Do not assume that a familiar hymn or bhajan recording is public domain because the underlying composition is old.
YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A detected match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, an interruption, or termination. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid an interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams. No particular Tamil playlist’s rights are established here, so clear the specific recordings before broadcasting.

Prepare the media file and VPS
Use one tested file for the simplest loop
For a predictable first setup, render the playlist into a single local media file containing both the video and audio you want to broadcast. It could use a static devotional visual, but you need rights to that image too. Confirm that the file plays from beginning to end and has the expected audio and video tracks before uploading or copying it to the VPS.
A single file avoids playlist-demuxing complexity in the main command. If you instead feed FFmpeg several files, test the actual files for matching codecs, compatible dimensions and frame rates, timestamps, transitions, and gaps. Concatenating unlike inputs may require a different FFmpeg filter or a prior render.

Check VPS capacity before choosing quality
The VPS needs the media file, an FFmpeg build with RTMPS support, and a sustained outbound connection to YouTube. Choose a bitrate your VPS can maintain rather than relying on a hosting plan label. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and checking performance with representative audio and moving video. Its published bitrate figures are guidance, not a promise that a particular VPS can sustain them.

Create the YouTube stream and protect the key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
- In Stream settings, copy the RTMPS URL. YouTube’s interface exposes it from the lock icon in the Stream URL field; use RTMPS rather than the ordinary RTMP URL.
- Copy the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not put a real key in a public tutorial, repository, screenshot, or support ticket.
- Keep both values private and substitute them locally in the command below. The basic single-process example uses the primary ingest address.
RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection; Google’s ingest guidance specifies port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and the Google RTMPS ingestion guide. FFmpeg documents the RTMPS protocol and real-time pacing for file streaming in its protocol documentation.
Start FFmpeg with a conservative loop command
For a compatible MP4 named devotional-loop.mp4 that contains the intended picture and playlist audio, run this on the VPS, replacing the endpoint and key placeholders with the private values from Live Control Room:

-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR-INGEST-URL/YOUR-STREAM-KEY'-re paces the file in real time, and -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. The command encodes H.264 video at 30 fps with a 60-frame GOP—two seconds at that frame rate—and AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. The FLV muxer is used for the RTMP-family output. This assumes the input has both usable audio and video; an audio-only file needs a different design that supplies video, while a file without audio needs an appropriate audio track or adjusted mapping.

The example’s 5 Mbps video rate is YouTube’s listed minimum for H.264 at 1080p30, not its recommended rate. It may trade quality for bandwidth. Test the command with the actual file and VPS, inspect FFmpeg’s output, and verify the YouTube preview before treating it as ready for an audience. The command is illustrative, not a vendor-certified universal configuration.
Choose bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. For a basic SDR stream, use progressive scan and square pixels. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it must not exceed four seconds. Its SDR guidance lists Rec. 709. For stereo audio, the guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings before broadcast, since platform guidance and interface labels can change.

Match the output to the weakest link among source quality, VPS CPU and outbound capacity, and ingest requirements. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers, so your upload bitrate is not the only quality viewers may receive.

Check the preview, stream health, and process
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for connection errors, encoder errors, or repeated reconnections.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that the preview appears with the expected picture and audio before starting or publicizing the event.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and correct any configuration issue it reports. YouTube recommends testing representative motion and sound and monitoring health while broadcasting.
- For automated monitoring, the LiveStreams API exposes status and health information, including configuration issues. For a manual setup, use Studio’s stream-health display.
For an unattended VPS, a service manager such as systemd can start FFmpeg at boot and restart a failed process. A restart is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted live event: it may resume at an unexpected playlist position, and it does not guarantee the YouTube event remains healthy or the host stays available. Configure monitoring or alerts suited to the stream, and check the YouTube preview after recovery. The exact unit configuration depends on your host and deployment.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube shows no incoming stream: Recheck that you copied the RTMPS URL and key from the correct stream, that the full endpoint is quoted correctly, and that the key is current. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and that the VPS can make outbound connections to the ingest service.
- The stream connects but drops or buffers: The VPS may not sustain the chosen outbound bitrate. Test actual upload capacity while the stream is running; reduce resolution or bitrate if needed. Do not treat a plan’s advertised network speed as proof of sustained capacity.
- Video is missing or malformed: Confirm the input contains a video stream and that it decodes correctly. Check the selected frame rate, dimensions, pixel format, and FFmpeg output. The example expects a suitable video track; it does not generate one.
- Audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync: Verify the input’s audio track and playback, then inspect FFmpeg’s mapping and encoding output. Confirm the stream preview includes audio and that the source file’s audio is synchronized before looping.
- YouTube interrupts the live stream or displays a placeholder: Check for a copyright match and resolve the rights issue with the relevant owner. If you have permission, ask whether the channel must be added to the owner’s Content ID allowlist.
- A process restart does not restore the broadcast as expected: Check both the FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s live status. Restarting the process alone cannot confirm the event recovered; inspect the preview and stream health.
