Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the video on your own device first: make sure the player is not paused or seeking, then see whether the picture changes and the audio continues. If you run the channel, check the stream’s status and health in YouTube Live Control Room. These checks answer different questions: your player shows what you are receiving; the owner’s status tools show whether YouTube is receiving the source stream.
Check playback on your device
- Make sure playback is running. Check the YouTube player’s play control and confirm you have not paused or scrubbed to an earlier point. YouTube supports DVR controls on some live streams, so a still frame may mean you are paused or rewinding rather than that the broadcast has ended. YouTube LiveBroadcasts API documentation
- Look and listen for signs of progress. Watch for a changing picture or advancing lecture content, and listen for sound if the lecture includes audio. Picture and audio that continue on your device are the most direct signs that your current playback is advancing.
- If it appears stuck, reopen YouTube. Close and reopen the app or browser, then try the stream again. YouTube recommends basic browser and device checks and trying another supported device if the problem persists. YouTube playback troubleshooting
- Compare another video or device. If other videos also buffer or fail, or the lecture works on another supported device, that is a clue the issue may be local to the first device, browser, or network. It is not a definitive diagnosis: network congestion and other factors can affect live programming. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting and metrics guidance
If you operate the channel, check the source stream
Use YouTube Live Control Room
Open the stream dashboard in YouTube Live Control Room and review the stream’s status and health information. Available metrics can differ depending on the streaming method. This check helps establish whether the source is reaching YouTube; it does not show whether a particular viewer’s device is rendering the stream correctly. Use the API for programmatic monitoring
If you have an API-authorized monitoring setup, retrieve the associated liveStream resource and inspect status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. YouTube defines active as the state in which it is receiving data via the stream; inactive means it is not receiving the stream, and error indicates an error condition. Health values include good, ok, bad, and noData. YouTube LiveStreams API reference
Check broadcast state separately from source-stream state. YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle guidance says to confirm that the bound stream is active before transitioning the broadcast. An active source means data is arriving at YouTube, not that every viewer can play it. YouTube Life of a Broadcast

What each check can and cannot tell you
| Observation | What it supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Picture and audio continue on your device | Your current player appears to be advancing. | That every viewer has uninterrupted playback. |
| The player is paused or the image does not change | Playback may be paused, seeking, stalled, or showing a static frame. | That the source broadcast ended. |
| Live Control Room reports an active, healthy source | YouTube is receiving the source stream and reports its condition. | That a particular viewer’s network, device, or player is rendering it. |
| A viewer or concurrent-viewer count is nonzero | YouTube is reporting some playback or viewer activity. | That your individual player is still advancing. |
| The stream plays on another supported device | The first device, browser, or network may be involved. | A definitive cause without further diagnosis. |
Why viewer counts are not a playback heartbeat
YouTube defines a playback as an instance when a browser or device starts playing a stream, and concurrent viewers as simultaneous viewers. These are aggregate metrics, not a live confirmation that a particular person’s video is still moving on screen. Use your player for your playback and owner-side status tools for source ingestion.
