Capture a website at custom viewport widths
- Open the site in Chrome or Edge. Navigate to the page you want to compare.
- Open DevTools. Press F12, or on Mac press Command + Option + I.
- Enable the device toolbar. Press Ctrl + Shift + M on Windows, or Command + Shift + M on Mac. You can also use the device-toolbar button in DevTools.
- Set the first viewport. Choose a device preset or enter the width and height you need. For sharper output, Screenshot.rocks’ mobile guide suggests a device pixel ratio of 2 or 3. Reload after enabling device mode if the page still appears to use its desktop layout; some sites choose their layout on initial load.
- Capture the page. Open the device toolbar’s three-dot menu and choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture full size screenshot for the scrolling page.
- Repeat for each width. Keep the browser and capture conditions consistent. Label the files with their viewport widths so the differences are easy to compare.
- Optionally style the captures. Import the resulting images into Screenshot.rocks to place them in browser or phone frames, choose a background, annotate, and export.
The widths are yours to choose: use the values relevant to your design review or breakpoint checks. The tool’s published preset dimensions are capture settings, not universal responsive breakpoints.

Can you set a custom width in Screenshot.rocks?
Screenshot.rocks’ documented online URL capture has desktop and mobile presets, but its documentation does not describe an arbitrary viewport-width field in that flow. Use browser device mode when you need exact custom widths, then bring those images into Screenshot.rocks for mockup presentation.

Choose visible-screen or full-page capture
- Visible viewport: Choose Capture screenshot when you need to compare what appears on screen at each width.
- Entire scrolling page: Choose Capture full size screenshot when content below the fold matters. The documented Chrome/Edge device-toolbar route supports full-page capture at a custom width.
When to capture in your own browser
Use browser device mode rather than Screenshot.rocks’ online URL capture when the page requires authentication, is on localhost or a staging environment, blocks automated browsers, or must be shown in a particular interaction state such as an open menu. Screenshot.rocks says its online capture acts as a first-time visitor and takes the first screen; the browser guide says device mode can capture pages you can open, including logged-in pages.
For alternatives within a browser, the official mobile guide also describes Firefox Responsive Design Mode and Safari Responsive Design Mode. Firefox’s camera button saves a phone-sized viewport screenshot. Safari’s guide instructs users to enter Responsive Design Mode and capture the preview with the system screenshot shortcut. For custom-width full-page captures, the guide specifically documents Chrome or Edge’s device toolbar.

Use Screenshot.rocks to present the captures
Screenshot.rocks is best suited to styling screenshots as mockups: add a browser or phone frame, choose a background, annotate, and export. Its homepage says, “Images are processed in your browser and never stored on our servers.” Its screenshot guide separately says the captured page is returned to the browser and is not stored on the server. Those are the vendor’s statements, not a broader security guarantee.

Troubleshooting responsive captures
- The page still looks like desktop: Reload after enabling device mode. Some pages select a layout when they first load.
- The full-page capture is cut off or incomplete: Confirm you chose Capture full size screenshot, not the visible-viewport option. If the page loads content as you scroll, allow it to load before capturing.
- The page is blocked or asks you to sign in: Open it in your own browser and capture in device mode; the online URL capture cannot see pages behind a login and may not work on sites that block automated browsers.
- The output is too small or soft: Check the device pixel ratio setting. Screenshot.rocks’ mobile guide suggests 2 or 3 for a sharper image.
- The comparison is hard to interpret: Capture the same page state at every width, keep the browser conditions consistent, and include the width in each filename.
