First confirm YouTube created an editable archive: it warns that a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a 24/7 lecture needs a recording and segmentation plan rather than relying on YouTube’s archive alone.
Before adding chapters, confirm the recording exists
Chapter entries belong in the description of a video. Open YouTube Studio and verify that the stream archive appears in your content and can be opened for editing. If the archive is missing, description timestamps cannot recover it.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive backup. Because a continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, plan how to record and divide the lecture into manageable segments; this is an operational safeguard, not a separate YouTube chapter rule. During the event, check that your local archive file is growing and monitor audio and video quality, as YouTube’s live-stream tips advise. Verify after the event that the archive is present and editable before you depend on it for chaptering.

Add manual chapters in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select the archived stream.
- Open the video’s details and locate the description field.
- Add timestamp-and-title lines in chronological order. Start with
00:00, include at least three timestamps, and make sure each chapter lasts at least 10 seconds. - Save the video, then open the published video and check that the chapter markers appear and lead to the intended points.
For example, if the recording has topics at the beginning, 18 minutes, and 42 minutes, the description could contain:

42:00 Worked exampleThese meet the basic format only if the video actually reaches each timestamp and the gaps between consecutive chapter starts are at least 10 seconds. The final chapter must also have at least 10 seconds of content. YouTube’s chapter guidance documents the manual requirements. For a 24/7 stream archive, YouTube does not expressly guarantee that every long recording exposes the same editing controls as an ordinary video; check the specific archive.

Manual chapters or automatic chapters?

For a lecture where viewers need reliable navigation to named topics, manual entries provide the predictable labels and points. Automatic chapters can be useful as a convenience, but should not be your only plan. YouTube may also show chapters in transcripts; that does not mean a transcript creates chapter timestamps. A transcript can help you identify topic boundaries, after which you still add the manual description entries.

You can insert markers while a stream is live to note important moments. YouTube documents using those markers on the timeline when creating a highlight in YouTube Editor; it does not say that markers automatically become description chapters. Treat them as notes for later editing, then add timestamp-and-title lines to the archive description if you want chapters. See YouTube’s instructions for creating highlights.

Plan a dependable archive for a continuous lecture
- Separate the recording plan from the chapter plan. Chapters improve navigation only after a usable video exists.
- Choose a capture and segmentation approach. A 24/7 stream is longer than YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive window, so do not assume one uninterrupted archive will be created. Decide how to preserve local recordings and divide the stream into reviewable videos.
- Monitor the backup while streaming. Confirm the local recording is actively growing and that the audio and video remain usable.
- Keep topic notes. Record approximate start times and lecture headings during the event, or use a transcript as an aid afterward. Verify every timestamp against the actual video before publishing.
- Check the finished video. Confirm the archive opens, the description saves, and the chapters appear in the player. YouTube’s generic chapter documentation does not settle every archive-specific case for streams lasting longer than 12 hours.
