To loop several prerecorded videos on YouTube Live, install VLC alongside OBS Studio, add the files to an OBS VLC Video Source playlist, enable playlist looping, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream and test the result in YouTube Studio before going live.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio and VLC: OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on VLC libraries, so install VLC for the source to be available. Match the architectures; OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when you use 64-bit OBS. OBS: Media Sources
- Video files: Keep the files accessible to the computer running OBS and decide their playback order in advance.
- YouTube live-stream eligibility: Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before a planned broadcast. YouTube: Get started with live streaming YouTube: Live streaming tips
Build and configure the rotating playlist in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene that should show your videos. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Give the source a clear name and confirm.
- In the source properties, add your local video files to the playlist in the order you want them to play. Reorder the items there if needed. The source plays the listed order by default; turn on Shuffle Playlist only if you want a different, randomized order.
- Make sure Loop Playlist is enabled. It is on by default; with it enabled, playback returns to the start of the list when the final item ends.
- Review the source’s visibility behavior. OBS’s default is to stop playback when the source is hidden and restart it when visible. If you switch scenes, choose the continue, pause, or stop behavior that matches your intended broadcast. A source that stops when hidden will not keep progressing through the playlist while it is off-screen.
- Check Audio Track if a file has multiple audio tracks; the default is track 1. Network caching defaults to 400 ms and is relevant if media is network-hosted; local files generally do not require you to change it.
- Look at the OBS preview and confirm the video fits the canvas. Check that audio is audible and that the OBS audio meter responds when the clip plays.
OBS documents these VLC source controls in its Media Sources guide. The guide is dated January 11, 2022, so labels or behavior may differ in later OBS releases.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. If you are scheduling a broadcast, set it up there before the test.
- Copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. The key is the credential an encoder uses to send video to your channel: do not share it or include it in screenshots. Reset it in YouTube if you think it has been exposed. YouTube: Set up your encoder YouTube: Manage your live stream settings
- For the connection protocol, YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Set the encoder’s video and audio options to a format YouTube accepts, then choose a resolution and frame rate your computer and upload connection can sustain.
- Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate guidance rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Its encoder-settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 for video over RTMP/RTMPS, CBR bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, it lists AAC or MP3. YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- YouTube also documents HLS as an option for cases that require its codec or HDR support; HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. For a standard playlist stream, RTMPS is the recommended starting point.
Test, then start the broadcast
- Start streaming from OBS with the actual playlist, not a placeholder scene. Watch more than one transition if possible, and check the picture, motion, audio, and whether the next file starts as expected.
- For a scheduled event, wait for the feed to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm the image and sound there before selecting Go Live.
- During the broadcast, keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s audio/video output. A preview that appears correct at the start does not rule out a later connection or playback problem.
YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health. See its encoder settings and live streaming tips guidance.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing from OBS | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match architectures. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documents that 64-bit VLC is required. Then reopen OBS and check the Sources menu. |
| The playlist stops at the last file | Looping is off. | Open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Videos play in an unexpected order | The playlist order differs from what you intended, or shuffle is enabled. | Reorder the files in the source properties and turn off Shuffle Playlist for listed-order playback. |
| Playback restarts after changing scenes | The source is hidden and uses OBS’s default stop-when-hidden behavior. | Adjust the source’s visibility behavior to continue, pause, or stop as appropriate for your scene workflow. |
| There is no sound or the wrong audio plays | The chosen track may not contain the expected audio, or audio is not reaching the OBS mix. | Check the source’s Audio Track selection (track 1 is the default), then verify the OBS audio meter and monitor the YouTube preview. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The stream URL or key may be missing or incorrect, or the channel may not yet be able to go live. | Recheck the encoder settings against the values shown in YouTube Studio. Confirm channel verification and restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live activation. |
| YouTube preview or stream health shows a problem | The encoder output may not match the selected YouTube settings, or the upload connection may not sustain the chosen output. | Compare OBS’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format with YouTube’s current guidance. Test at a lower supported output if the connection cannot reliably carry the selected bitrate. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Using OBS to loop a file does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Before streaming, confirm you have the rights needed for every video, song, performance, and other included material. YouTube may apply its copyright and live-stream policies to prerecorded content just as it does to other broadcasts. Review YouTube’s current rules and any notices in Studio; do not assume that a video being available online or a playlist being technically playable makes it safe to rebroadcast.
