Schedule JavaScript animation with requestAnimationFrame(), account for hidden-tab throttling, and move canvas rendering to a worker only when main-thread work is the problem. Re-test the same scene on the browsers and devices that will run the stream; no one change guarantees smooth playback on every setup.
Find out what is dropping frames before changing code
A low frame rate identifies a symptom, not its cause. The work may be on the main thread, in rasterization, or in GPU activity. Capture the problem in Chrome DevTools while the representative animated sequence is running, and use the trace to decide what to change. Chrome’s runtime performance guide explains how to record and inspect runtime activity.

- Open Chrome DevTools, select the Performance panel, and record the sequence that exhibits the stutter. Keep the workload and conditions consistent so later recordings can be compared.
- Inspect the FPS chart and Frames track for low-frame-rate periods and dropped or partially presented frames. Chrome’s performance features reference explains the frame categories; a dropped frame is one Chrome cannot render in a reasonable time.
- Examine the main-thread flame chart, animation activity, and GPU or raster activity. Look for work that coincides with the bad frames rather than assuming the CPU or graphics hardware is responsible.
- Record frame duration and dropped-frame severity alongside CPU load, relevant GPU/raster activity, visual fidelity, memory use, and power impact. These measurements let you judge a change beyond a single FPS reading.
Chrome’s charts are diagnostic views, not a guarantee of the stream’s eventual frame rate. Establish a baseline on the intended device and browser before tuning.
Make JavaScript animation follow the browser’s repaint cycle
For animation driven by JavaScript, use requestAnimationFrame() rather than an assumed fixed-rate timer. The browser calls the callback before repaint, and the callback is one-shot: the animation loop must request the next frame itself. Use the callback timestamp or elapsed time to advance the story, not a fixed amount per callback. Displays can refresh at different rates, so fixed-step-per-callback animation may run at different speeds on different screens. See MDN’s requestAnimationFrame() reference.

requestAnimationFrame(animate);This is a scheduling pattern, not a complete animation engine: updateStory and renderStory stand for your own logic. Clamp or otherwise handle unusually large elapsed times if a long pause should not cause the story to jump forward. Validate the intended timing as well as smoothness.
Handle background tabs deliberately
Most browsers pause requestAnimationFrame() callbacks in background tabs or hidden iframes. An always-on requirement for the overall product does not mean a hidden browser page will render at foreground cadence. Decide what the story should do when its document is hidden: pause rendering and work that need not continue, or resume according to the product’s timing rules when it becomes visible.

Listen for visibilitychange and use document.visibilityState to apply that policy. MDN’s Page Visibility API guide describes the event and visibility state. Test both transitions: hiding the page should not leave unnecessary work running, and returning to it should restore the intended animation state.
Move canvas rendering to a worker only when the trace points to the main thread
OffscreenCanvas can separate a DOM canvas element from canvas rendering operations and let those operations run in a worker context. That can help when canvas work is blocking other main-thread tasks. It is not a general remedy for excessive drawing, GPU-bound rendering, or unrelated bottlenecks.

Check support in the browsers and devices the stream must serve, then compare the same scene before and after moving work. Confirm frame timing, main-thread activity, visual output, memory and power behavior. A worker adds an implementation path to maintain; keep it only if measurements show a useful improvement for your deployment.
Reduce avoidable work in animation effects
For suitable effects, simple transforms and opacity can be efficient because browsers may handle them through compositing. But indiscriminately promoting elements to layers or adding GPU hints can consume memory, and the result depends on the animation and browser implementation. - Use a trace to identify the costly effect or drawing work before simplifying it.
- Test transforms or opacity where they preserve the intended visual behavior; do not assume every effect will benefit.
- Avoid blanket layer promotion or GPU hints. Compare resource use and frame outcomes on the target hardware.
Compare changes on the devices that will run the story
Change one bottleneck at a time. Record the baseline and the modified version using the same representative scene and conditions, then compare:
- Frame duration and how often frames are dropped or partially presented.
- Main-thread time and CPU load during that sequence.
- GPU and raster activity when the trace implicates them.
- Story timing and visual fidelity, including what happens after a hidden page becomes visible again.
- Memory and power impact during extended use.
- Behavior across the actual browser and display-refresh matrix.
Common display refresh rates include 60, 75, 120, and 144 Hz; these are examples, not a universal target or a dropped-frame success threshold. The browser’s callback frequency generally follows the display refresh rate, so check that animation progress is time-based rather than tied to a presumed 60 callbacks per second.

Troubleshoot stuttering by matching the symptom to evidence
It stutters in the foreground
Record a DevTools trace during the stutter. If main-thread work coincides with bad frames, reduce or reschedule that work; if canvas rendering is the blocker, test OffscreenCanvas in a worker. If GPU or raster activity is implicated, investigate the drawing workload and effects rather than assuming a faster processor will solve it.
It stutters or stops when the page is hidden
Check whether the document is hidden and whether the browser has paused animation callbacks. Use the visibility policy appropriate to the product instead of expecting a background tab to render like a foreground one.
Animation speed changes across displays
Check whether the animation advances by a fixed amount per callback. Use the callback timestamp or elapsed time so higher-refresh displays do not make the story run faster.
A rendering change helps one machine but not another
Compare traces on the deployment matrix and check memory, power, and visual behavior as well as frame timing. Browser support and implementation vary; retain a specialized path only when it provides a measured benefit on the devices that need it.
