For a reliable fade at every clip boundary, combine your clips and fades into one continuous video, then loop that file in OBS Studio. OBS can loop a single Media Source and can loop a VLC playlist, but its built-in Fade is a transition between scenes—not an automatic crossfade between items in a VLC playlist. If you do not need fades, a looping playlist is simpler.
Choose the playback method that fits your fade requirement

OBS scenes can each contain sources, and OBS’s Fade transition changes from one scene to another. That can work if you switch between scenes, but it does not make a VLC playlist fade automatically whenever a file ends. OBS’s documentation covers media sources and VLC playlist properties separately from its scene transitions. Treat the continuous rendered file as the straightforward choice when clip-to-clip fades must happen without an operator advancing scenes.

Prepare the clips and decide how to handle audio
- Confirm you can stream the material. Use video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast. Permission to use a file does not necessarily cover every element in it, such as music.
- Choose the sequence and transitions. In a video editor, arrange the clips, set the fade or crossfade at each boundary, and check that the transition does not cut off important picture or audio. The appropriate duration depends on the material; preview the assembled programme rather than assuming one setting suits every clip.
- Make the end join cleanly to the beginning. If the programme will repeat, inspect the last-to-first boundary as well as the internal clip boundaries. Put an additional transition into the rendered programme if that is the effect you want at the loop point.
- Export and review the file. Check the whole sequence, including sound levels and transitions, before loading it into OBS. The fade workflow is an implementation recommendation based on OBS’s documented source and transition behavior, not a claim that OBS has tested or certified a particular editor or export.
If the clips must remain separate, use VLC Video and manage scene changes separately. You can create scenes for the material and use OBS’s scene Fade when switching between them, but ordinary scene Fade does not automatically detect a playlist item ending. Advancing scenes therefore requires operator control or a separately configured automation mechanism. OBS also documents show/hide transitions for animating a source; those animate source visibility and are not documented as VLC playlist-item crossfades. See the OBS source animation tutorial.

Set up the loop in OBS Studio
Option A: loop one rendered file
- Open OBS and select the scene where the programme should appear.
- Under Sources, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose the rendered video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Confirm the video fits the canvas as intended and that its audio is present. Preview the end-to-start join before going live.

Option B: loop separate files as a VLC playlist
- Install VLC before configuring the source. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: the OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the scene, then under Sources select + and add VLC Video.
- Add the video files to the playlist in the order you want. Leave shuffle off if the sequence matters.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then preview playback and check that all intended files appear.
These settings loop the playlist; they do not establish automatic fades between its files. OBS lists playlist looping and shuffle behavior in its VLC source documentation.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check live access. If this is your first time enabling live streaming on the channel, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before a planned broadcast.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one if you want a planned watch page, promotion, or reminders.
- Copy the ingest details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream, then enter them in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address; keep it private. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Protect or reset the key if needed. Do not share it publicly. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. YouTube explains stream-key management in Manage live stream settings.
- Start and verify the feed. Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check picture and audio, and select Go live when ready. Confirm the result on the YouTube watch page before leaving the setup unattended.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop sending from OBS and end the stream in YouTube Studio as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.
The exact output settings depend on your content and connection; the cited workflow does not prescribe a universal resolution or bitrate. Use an ingest protocol supported by your encoder and chosen stream settings. HLS is not required simply because the video loops: YouTube describes it as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, with higher latency than RTMP and additional segment and rolling-playlist requirements. Check copyright and channel-policy risks
- Make sure you have permission to stream both the picture and audio in each clip. A loop does not change whether the material is authorized.
- Check the stream preview for unexpected black frames, missing audio, or transitions that expose material you did not intend to broadcast.
- Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel rules for your content. This setup guide does not establish that a particular playlist is eligible for monetization or that repeating material satisfies YouTube’s channel policies.
Troubleshooting
