A steady bitrate does not rule out dropped frames. First check which counter is rising: in OBS, network-dropped frames indicate a connection-path problem, while rendering lag and encoding lag point to separate computer-processing stages. Match the symptom to the stage before changing settings.
What stable bitrate does—and does not—tell you
The bitrate shown by an encoder is a rate measurement, not proof that every frame is reaching YouTube reliably. A connection can have enough average capacity yet suffer brief interruptions or congestion. YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can affect a live stream even when the network can sustain its average bitrate (YouTube Help: latency and streaming).

In OBS, “dropped frames” is not one catch-all diagnosis. OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames, frames missed due to rendering lag, and frames skipped due to encoding lag. Those counters identify different stages, so a stable network bitrate cannot explain or rule out rendering or encoding trouble.

Dropped Frames (Network)
This points to the outbound connection between your streaming computer and YouTube’s ingest server. OBS says network drops mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; severe problems can disconnect the encoder (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Frames missed due to rendering lag
This indicates that the computer may not be rendering or compositing frames quickly enough. Investigate the scene and local rendering load rather than treating the bitrate display as a network diagnosis.
Skipped frames due to encoding lag
This indicates that frames may not be encoded on time. Check encoder errors and CPU load, as YouTube advises when the stream already looks or sounds poor in the encoder (YouTube Help: troubleshoot live streams).

Diagnose the problem in order
- Record the exact counter and its trend. Note your encoder and version, the counter label, and whether it rises during the event. In OBS, inspect the Stats window or the corresponding status display. A rising network counter directs attention to the connection path; rendering and encoding counters direct attention to different processing stages.
- Compare the local output with YouTube’s stream health. Monitor YouTube’s stream health messages. If the stream looks or sounds bad in the encoder, check encoder errors and CPU load, and inspect a local recording for audio or video defects. If the local output looks healthy, investigate the outbound connection (YouTube Help: troubleshoot live streams).
- Check upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Upload capacity can be lower than download capacity, and a shared office network may limit what an individual device can use. A disruption in connectivity can break a stream (YouTube Help: network guidance).
- Assess the connection during the actual stream. A general speed test is useful, but a single result does not establish that the full route to YouTube’s ingest server is stable. If the network-drop counter rises while the average bitrate looks normal, check shared network use and software or hardware that could interfere with traffic. OBS identifies instability and inability to sustain the configured bitrate as possible causes; the counter alone does not identify a particular router, cable, or ISP.
- Compare your settings with YouTube’s current recommendations. YouTube’s guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, and recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS. For H.264, the listed figures are 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended at 1080p60, and 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended at 1080p30. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. Check the current table for your exact configuration (YouTube Help: encoder settings).
- Find out whether the issue affects multiple viewers. If many viewers on different connections report errors, YouTube says an encoder issue may be involved. A report from one viewer may instead reflect that viewer’s local connection. Treat reports as clues alongside encoder metrics, not as a definitive diagnosis (YouTube Help: troubleshoot live streams).
- Change one thing at a time and retest. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the real event, then monitoring stream health during the event. A controlled retest makes it easier to tell whether a change affected the counter (YouTube Help: encoder settings and testing).
Match the symptom to the next check
| What you see | Most relevant next check |
|---|---|
| OBS network-dropped frames increase | Upload headroom, shared network use, connection stability, and the configured bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations. |
| Rendering-lag frames increase | Whether the computer is rendering and compositing the scene on time. |
| Encoding-lag frames increase | Encoder errors and CPU load; confirm the selected configuration is appropriate for the machine. |
| Encoder output is poor and local recording has defects | Local encoder errors and CPU load, as well as the recording’s audio and video. |
| Encoder output is healthy but stream health or viewers show a problem | Outbound connection quality and reports from viewers on different networks. |
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Assuming stable bitrate means stable delivery: average capacity does not rule out intermittent trouble along the route to ingest.
- Treating every OBS frame counter as a network issue: rendering and encoding lag are separate from network drops.
- Using download speed as a proxy for upload headroom: YouTube specifically advises checking upload capacity.
- Changing several settings at once: retest after one change so the effect is interpretable.
- Replacing hardware before locating the fault: a wired connection can be a useful diagnostic test if your setup allows it, but YouTube does not prescribe a new cable as a guaranteed fix. It cannot solve rendering or encoding lag.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate option from diagnosing a live camera or encoder setup. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams the uploaded file as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
