To repeat an animated background during a YouTube Live broadcast, add the video file to an OBS scene as a Media Source, turn on Loop, then send OBS’s output to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Test the full scene and its motion before going live; the repeat setting belongs to the video source in OBS, not to YouTube.
Before you set up OBS, check that the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Creators must be at least 16 years old. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility and start activation well before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility information has the current requirements.

Make the animated background loop in OBS
Add the video as a Media Source
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene you plan to stream, or create one in the Scenes panel.
- In the Sources panel, select +, choose Media Source, and create or select a source.
- In the source properties, select the local animated video file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. If the file does not play as expected, check that OBS can open it before continuing.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS restarts the file when playback reaches its end. The loop is therefore controlled by the source in OBS; YouTube receives the resulting live feed. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Frame the background for the stream
Use the OBS preview to position and resize the source so it fills the canvas at the output aspect ratio you intend to send. Check the edges and any text or subjects near them: a file composed for a different aspect ratio may be cropped or leave unused space. OBS documents positioning and resizing scene sources in its Sources guide.
Play through the end of the file and its return to the beginning during your test. Confirm the transition is acceptable, the motion is not cut off by the frame, and any audio in the file is intentional. If you want a silent background, make sure the scene does not send unintended audio.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, and create or select the stream in the Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate service option, and enter the connection details. The exact labels can vary with OBS versions and connection choices.
- Treat the stream key as a password: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Do not publish it or share it; reset it in YouTube Studio if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube explains the encoder connection in its live encoder setup guide and its stream-key guidance.
Use RTMPS where available. YouTube’s published guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 encoders, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Set the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in OBS to values your computer and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s current live encoder settings list bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate; use that table for the output you choose rather than treating a higher setting as automatically better. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewer playback, so prioritize a stable, correctly configured feed.
Test the picture, loop, and connection before going live
- Start the OBS stream and wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear. Check the whole frame, animation, and audio before starting or sharing the broadcast.
- Let the actual animated file reach its end and restart. A still image or a short partial preview will not confirm the loop transition.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and inspect the feed for dropped frames, buffering, unexpected black frames, or audio you did not intend to include.
- Test with the same resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you plan to use. YouTube recommends testing ahead of the event and retaining upload-bandwidth headroom; its streaming tips recommend 20% headroom. A speed test and a live test help establish whether your real connection can sustain the chosen settings. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
For a background broadcast with little or no audience interaction, latency is separate from looping. Lower latency can increase buffering, and YouTube notes that it matters less when you are not interacting with viewers in real time. Choose the latency setting for the kind of broadcast rather than changing it to try to make the video repeat.

Choose an encoder approach that fits the setup
OBS is a computer-software encoder and scene compositor: it can play the local file, apply the loop behavior, and send the composed output to YouTube. YouTube also recognizes standalone hardware encoders. A hardware encoder may suit an existing higher-production setup, but it is not inherently necessary for a single looped background. The choice depends on equipment you already own, desired scene controls, and setup complexity; YouTube does not endorse a specific encoder in its guidance. If you already have a suitable computer and OBS, no additional hardware is required just to repeat the background.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded video to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer or OBS running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. The setup is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live broadcast.

The video plays once and stops
Open the Media Source properties in OBS and check that Loop is enabled on the source that is actually in the active scene. Test through the file’s end again; the repeat control is not a YouTube setting.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Confirm OBS is sending to the correct stream URL and that the stream key matches the selected stream in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS with the replacement. Also check that the channel is eligible for live streaming and that first-time activation has completed.

The feed buffers or reports poor stream health
Lower the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a level the computer and connection can sustain, then test again. Check upload capacity and leave the recommended bandwidth headroom rather than setting OBS to consume nearly all available upload speed. A connection that passes a speed test can still vary during a broadcast, so watch stream health during the actual test.
The animation is cropped, stretched, or leaves blank areas
Reposition and resize the source in the OBS preview, and check the composition against the output canvas’s aspect ratio. If the animation was made for another shape, decide whether to crop edges or preserve the full image with unused space rather than assuming both can be avoided.

The loop has an abrupt visual or audio jump
Review the file’s last and first frames and listen across the restart. OBS restarts the file at its end; the loop control does not create a fade or repair a discontinuity in the media. Edit the video or audio source if a seamless transition is necessary.
The channel cannot start a live stream yet
Check verification and live-streaming restrictions in YouTube Studio, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live activation. Do not wait until the planned broadcast to discover that activation is pending.
Copyright and channel-policy checks still apply
Looping a file does not grant permission to use its animation, music, sound effects, or other included material. Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights or licences needed for every component, and review YouTube’s rules for live streams and channel content. Repeated or reused material can also raise channel-policy and monetization questions; a loop setting is a playback function, not an exception to those rules. Use YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and copyright guidance to assess your specific content and situation.
