Fix a Missing Rupee Symbol in PHP Browsershot Screenshots

A missing ₹ in a Browsershot capture often calls for checking U+20B9, the computed CSS font, and the fonts available to the actual headless Chrome process.

If the Indian rupee sign appears as a blank, box, or replacement character in a PHP Browsershot screenshot, check the character, the font selected by CSS, and the fonts available to the exact headless Chrome process that takes the screenshot. The intended Indian Rupee Sign is U+20B9 (₹); correct HTML alone does not guarantee that the rendering font can display it.

How Browsershot renders the page

Browsershot uses Puppeteer and headless Chrome to turn HTML into an image or PDF. That makes the runtime environment important: a font installed on your laptop, or available to a different browser, may not be available to the Chrome process launched by your PHP application. Spatie describes this rendering path in its Browsershot repository.

Start by establishing whether this is a character problem or a rendering problem. Do not begin by changing production markup or adding browser flags at random.

Diagnose the missing sign in order

  1. Confirm the character is U+20B9

Inspect the source string or rendered DOM. The Indian Rupee Sign is ₹, Unicode U+20B9; in HTML it can also be written as ₹ or ₹. Do not confuse it with U+20A8 (₨), a different, older generic rupee sign. The Unicode Standard, Version 17.0, identifies U+20B9 as the Indian rupee symbol introduced by the Government of India in 2010.

    • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  2. Make a minimal test with the production rendering path

Render a small page containing ₹ 123 using the same PHP call, service user, container, Chrome executable, and CSS font stack as the failing screenshot. If the sign is still missing, investigate the browser runtime and font coverage before the website’s layout. If it appears, compare the affected page’s CSS and font-loading behavior.

  3. Inspect the computed font and font loading

Check the affected element’s computed font-family in Chrome and inspect whether any web-font request completes before the capture. A CSS family name is only a request: it does not prove that Chrome has loaded that font or that the font includes U+20B9. Use a fallback with verified glyph coverage if needed. Browsershot can inject CSS for diagnosis, but a CSS rule cannot install a font or add a glyph that the font does not contain; see Spatie’s image usage documentation.

    • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  4. Check fonts visible to the actual Chrome process

If the selected font lacks the sign, install or bundle a font that supports U+20B9 in the runtime image, or change the CSS stack to use a verified fallback. The right installation package and command depend on the operating system and container base image; identify those before applying a distro-specific fix. Also check that the application service user can access the font files.

  5. Retest after deployment changes

Run the minimal capture with the same executable and service user as the application. If fonts were added after the browser process started, restart or rebuild the relevant runtime as appropriate, then capture again. Confirm the screenshot itself rather than assuming the CSS change took effect.

Choose a fix that reaches the right font

There are two practical routes, and both require confirming that Chrome selects a font with the needed glyph.

Approach When it fits What to verify
Install a font in the runtime image The application depends on a system font or several pages need consistent coverage. The font includes U+20B9, the Chrome runtime user can access it, and deployment rebuilds preserve it.
Bundle or use a CSS-selected fallback font You want the page or application to explicitly select a known font for the affected text. The font is actually loaded before capture, includes U+20B9, and its license permits the intended deployment and redistribution.

No particular font or operating-system installation command can be recommended without knowing the deployment image and verifying glyph coverage and license terms. Compare options by glyph support, availability to the exact Chrome process, CSS selection, deployment maintainability, and licensing.

What not to mistake for a glyph fix

Spatie’s v4 requirements documentation includes font-render-hinting: none as an example flag for font-rendering issues on some Linux distributions. That concerns rendering behavior; the documentation does not identify it as a way to supply a missing U+20B9 glyph. Use it only when investigating a rendering-quality issue, not as the primary remedy for absent font coverage. See Spatie’s v4 requirements for the documented flag and browser configuration options.

The same requirements page currently states Node 22.0 LTS or higher and Puppeteer 23.0 or higher for Browsershot v4, and documents choosing another Chrome/Chromium executable and passing Chromium arguments. These are package requirements that can change; check the documentation and the versions installed in your project rather than assuming an older deployment matches them.

Troubleshoot common outcomes

  • HTML contains the sign, but the screenshot shows a square or blank. Check computed font selection and whether the selected font has U+20B9. Then verify that font is installed or loaded for the Chrome process that made the capture.
  • The minimal test works, but the website screenshot does not. Compare the affected element’s CSS, font-family and web-font loading timing with the test. Ensure the page has finished loading its font before capture.
  • The sign works locally but not on the server. The two Chrome environments may have different installed fonts, executable paths, users, or container contents. Test through the same server-side Browsershot call.
  • A CSS override changes nothing. Confirm that the selector matches the intended text and that the named font is available and contains U+20B9. CSS cannot create a glyph or make a missing font file available.
  • The result changes after a deployment. Check whether the runtime image or browser executable changed and whether the font installation or bundled asset survived the build. Re-run the minimal test in the deployed environment.

A Browsershot community discussion describes empty boxes across multiple scripts while text remained in the HTML, with missing fonts suggested as a possibility; it does not establish the cause of this particular rupee-symbol failure. Treat it as an example of why font availability is worth checking, not as a diagnosis: Browsershot community discussions.

If you need a screenshot without managing a headless Chrome font environment, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information and PDF capture. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
