First determine what “empty” means: a zero-length byte slice, a non-empty image that is white, a clipped image, or the wrong page region. Those outcomes point to different causes. Check the capture action, page readiness, selector geometry, image dimensions, and Chrome setup in that order; do not assume one fix applies to every blank screenshot.
Identify the failure before changing code
Log the error from chromedp.Run and the length of the returned bytes. If bytes are present, decode the image and inspect whether it is blank, clipped, or showing the wrong area. Save the output and reduce the case to one URL and one capture action where possible.

- Run returns an error: inspect the error and browser logs; this is a failed capture, not an empty image.
- Byte slice is empty: find where the result is assigned or returned and confirm the capture action ran successfully.
- Bytes decode to a white image: investigate page rendering, loading, and browser mode.
- Image is cut off or shows another region: check capture mode, dimensions, selector bounds, and scroll position.
- Some images or content are missing: wait for those resources or application rendering, rather than only waiting for the page or element to exist.
Reports from chromedp users describe these distinct symptoms; they do not establish one root cause for every case. For example, one report specifically describes a missed image during loading, while others describe blank, clipped, or incorrectly positioned output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the capture action that matches the result you want
chromedp offers different screenshot actions. Screenshot queries an element and captures its clipped area; CaptureScreenshot captures the current viewport; FullScreenshot captures beyond the viewport. A selector-based capture is not interchangeable with a viewport or full-page capture.

- For a single element, use
Screenshotwith a selector that uniquely matches the intended node. - For what is currently visible in Chrome, use
CaptureScreenshot. - For a page extending below the viewport, use
FullScreenshot.
The current implementation documents FullScreenshot as PNG when quality is 100 and JPEG for other quality values. The documented quality range is 0–100; changing quality does not make page content render or resolve a bad selector.
For difficult discrepancies, Chrome DevTools Protocol Monitor can show commands issued by Chrome’s “Capture node screenshot” flow that chromedp does not send. Comparing those commands is an advanced way to investigate a difference, not the first troubleshooting step.
Wait for the content, not just the element
Navigate, wait for the target to be ready, and then verify the content that must appear. WaitVisible or WaitReady can establish that an element exists or is visible; neither proves that every image or asynchronously rendered component inside it has finished loading.

For an image, a useful page-side condition is that the relevant image is complete and has non-zero natural dimensions. For an application-rendered page, wait for a page-specific ready marker or other condition that means the content is actually present. Prefer such checks to an arbitrary sleep, whose duration may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
A 2021 report using chromedp v0.7.6 and Chrome 88.0.4324.182 describes a screenshot missing an image while the page was still loading. Those are the versions in that report, not a claim about current releases; the practical lesson is to test resource readiness when content is absent.
Check selector bounds, viewport, and scroll position
Immediately before an element capture, log how many nodes the selector matches and inspect the target’s bounding rectangle and viewport position. The current chromedp implementation derives a clip rectangle from selected nodes’ client rectangles and rounds the clip dimensions. An incorrect selector, unexpected layout, or changed scroll position can therefore produce a capture that is empty-looking or focused on the wrong region.

A 2021 issue report using chromedp v0.7.3 and Chrome 91.0.4472.77 describes capturing another part of a page after scrolling and raises a coordinate-space mismatch as a suspected cause. That older report is a reason to compare scrolled and unscrolled captures, not proof of a current general defect.

- Log the selected element’s bounds immediately before the screenshot.
- Repeat with the page at its initial scroll position and at the position that reproduces the problem.
- Try capturing a smaller, stable element to determine whether the issue follows the selector or the page’s overall capture extent.
Reduce unusually large capture dimensions
Temporarily remove unusually large emulated viewport dimensions and retry with a normal viewport. If a viewport or small-element capture works while a full-page capture does not, capture size is a stronger lead than selector readiness.
Two 2022 issue reports illustrate why dimensions are worth testing, without defining universal Chrome limits. One author reported blank or cut-off output with a 7086 × 9448 emulated viewport. Another, using chromedp v0.8.1 and Chrome 103.0.5060.134, reported an error for a requested 2880 × 20544 image and said that environment reported max_texture_size_=16384. Do not treat that reported maximum as a limit shared by every Chrome installation.

For a very long document, compare a viewport capture or a smaller region before repeating a full capture. Tiled capture is not a built-in solution established by these reports; use it only if your own implementation provides it.
Compare headless and headed browser runs
chromedp’s project README states that Chrome runs in headless mode by default. Record the Chrome executable and build, OS, chromedp version, browser flags, and whether the run is headed or headless. If possible, repeat the same small capture in both modes while holding the page and dimensions constant.

An open 2024 issue reports a white page in one headless setup that used DisableGPU, but it does not establish that this flag is the cause or that toggling it fixes other cases. Do not blindly add or remove it. The project README also names the chromedp/headless-shell image as a simple option for a headless environment.

A controlled diagnostic sequence
- Record the output shape: save the error, byte length, and decoded result.
- Hold the browser setup constant: note Go, chromedp, Chrome, OS, mode, and flags.
- Check the action and selector: compare element, viewport, and full-page capture as appropriate.
- Wait for the actual content: verify the target image or application-ready condition.
- Reduce the capture area: retry at normal dimensions and with a smaller target.
- Test scrolling and browser mode: vary one factor at a time and retain the output from each run.
Changing one variable at a time makes the comparison interpretable. Historical issue reports involve older versions and different environments; use them to select tests, not to infer a cause without reproducing it.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot rather than a chromedp diagnosis, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; its cleanup steps can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
For a PNG, JPEG, or WebP response, use the API’s format option as documented. This cURL example saves a WebP response; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and available parameters.

What to include in a useful bug report
- Go, chromedp, and Chrome versions, plus the operating system and exact Chrome executable.
- Headless or headed mode and all browser flags.
- The screenshot action, selector if used, viewport dimensions, and current scroll position.
- The page readiness condition and whether the relevant images report complete, non-zero dimensions.
- The returned error, byte length, and whether the image decodes as blank, clipped, or incorrectly positioned.
- A minimal reproduction and saved output, when sharing them is appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does `WaitVisible` guarantee that images inside an element have loaded?
No. It establishes visibility, not completion of every image or asynchronous component. Check the specific resources or an application-ready condition.
Is 16,384 pixels the maximum screenshot dimension for Chrome?
The cited value was reported by one environment in a 2022 issue; it is not established as a universal Chrome limit.
Should I add or remove `DisableGPU` to fix a white screenshot?
Not as a general fix. A 2024 issue describes one headless setup, but does not establish a broadly applicable cause or remedy.
