You can run a radio-style YouTube Live channel by sending a continuous program feed from prerecorded audio and visuals through an encoder. Create a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, connect a software or hardware encoder—or a cloud playback service—using its server URL and stream key, then monitor the stream while it runs. YouTube does not provide a dedicated radio mode, and prerecorded content remains subject to copyright rules.
What you need before you go live
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch.
- Audio and visual files you have the necessary rights to use for a YouTube live stream, including any planned replay or archive.
- A playback-and-encoding setup that can keep sending the program feed: software on a computer, a supported hardware encoder, or a suitable cloud service.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the full stream bitrate plus headroom.
Choose how to keep the program playing
The encoder workflow is the same in principle for each option: your playback setup creates the program feed, and the encoder sends it to YouTube. Continuous file playback, scheduling, remote control and recovery features vary, so verify those details for the specific product before relying on it unattended.

For any setup, test the whole chain before treating it as continuous: playback, encoding, internet upload and the YouTube watch page. Backup equipment, alerts and human oversight can reduce interruption risk, but add complexity and possibly cost.

Prepare files and the stream settings
Build a radio-style program
Arrange your recordings and visuals into a playlist or playback sequence suited to the channel. Check that audio levels are consistent and that visuals play as intended. Confirm the playback setup can repeat or advance through files without leaving gaps; the exact controls depend on your encoder or cloud service.

Rights apply to every part of the program: sound recordings, musical compositions, images, video and other assets. A purchase, a “royalty-free” label or a license does not automatically establish that the material is cleared for YouTube Live in the relevant territories and for an archive. Review the rights and any Content ID requirements before broadcasting.
Set a sustainable video and audio feed
- Choose a resolution and bitrate that your encoder and sustained upload connection can support. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings and the encoder’s own documentation for the target you select; higher quality requires more bandwidth.
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube’s advanced audio recommendations specify stereo, 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Leave at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, as recommended by YouTube. Include all outgoing stream traffic when calculating the total.
- Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL; obtain the matching server URL from Live Control Room.
Create and start the YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, confirm that the channel can go live and that it meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Create the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or configure the stream, including its title and visibility. Choose an unlisted or private test where available before making a public launch.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream server URL and stream key. The key functions like a password: do not post or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Select the matching RTMP or RTMPS destination and enter the server URL and key. Load the intended playlist or playback source, then apply the resolution, bitrate, keyframe and audio settings you chose.
- Start sending the program feed. Start playback and tell the encoder to begin streaming. YouTube’s watch page is created after the encoder starts sending. Check Live Control Room’s preview before starting the public broadcast.
- Verify the complete experience. Listen to the preview, check that visuals move and the correct files play, and watch stream health. Test with representative material, not just a static screen or silent clip.
Keep the channel continuous without assuming it is maintenance-free
A 24/7 schedule depends on the full chain staying healthy: source playback, encoder, power, network and YouTube ingest. A local setup can stop if its computer sleeps, restarts, loses internet or exits the playback process. A cloud or hardware setup has its own service, device and network dependencies. Plan how someone will notice and respond to a failure.

- Monitor stream health and the actual YouTube preview, including sound and picture—not only whether the encoder says it is running.
- Test any backup encoder or failover procedure before depending on it. A backup path can reduce outage risk, but does not make a stream interruption-proof.
- If replay access matters, plan broadcast sessions and check the resulting archive in Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer uninterrupted broadcast will be saved as one complete replay.
Copyright applies to prerecorded live programming
Using prerecorded material does not avoid YouTube’s live-stream copyright checks or your responsibility to have the rights needed for the broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even if you hold a license, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to prevent a match from interrupting the live stream. Archived live streams can also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends.

Before launch, confirm that your permissions cover the relevant live use, territory and any replay, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility for the necessary rights, including music licensing rights, on the provider.

Troubleshoot common interruptions
