Best Free Tools for Running a Prerecorded YouTube Stream Continuously

OBS Studio can loop one local video or a VLC playlist into YouTube Live. Here’s how to set it up, meet YouTube’s requirements and plan for long-stream limits.

For a free do-it-yourself setup, OBS Studio is the clearest documented choice: use its Media Source to loop one video, or its VLC Video source to rotate through a playlist. Connect OBS to YouTube Live with your stream URL and key. This can keep a prerecorded feed running while your computer and internet connection remain available; it does not guarantee that a particular setup will stay online indefinitely.

Which tool should you use?

Repeat one video file OBS Studio Media Source with Loop enabled. OBS Media Sources documentation Direct and simple for a single local file.
Cycle through several files OBS Studio VLC Video source with a playlist and Loop Playlist enabled. Install VLC separately; a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation Playlist support adds a separate software dependency.
Keep a YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on at home StreamNeo — it loops uploaded videos in the cloud, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. It is a paid service after the free day, and it streams to YouTube only.

The OBS and YouTube documentation establishes these capabilities; it does not provide a reliability benchmark or prove OBS is the only free option.

How to loop a video on YouTube Live with OBS

1. Make sure your channel can go live

Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-stream start guidance. If this is your first live stream, enable live streaming well before you need it: YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

2. Add the video or playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio from the OBS Project.
  2. For one file, add a Media Source to your scene, select the local video, and enable Loop.
  3. For multiple files, install VLC and add a VLC Video source. Build its playlist, enable Loop Playlist, and make sure VLC and OBS have matching architecture: 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

OBS documents both looping options in its Media Sources guide. Keep the source files accessible on the computer while streaming.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one you have already set up.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the URL-and-key workflow.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
  4. Check the YouTube preview and confirm video and audio are working before starting the stream. Monitor stream quality and, if recording locally, verify that the recording file is growing; YouTube recommends these checks in its live-streaming tips.

4. Plan for streams longer than 12 hours

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. Archive live streams explains the limit. Viewer rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, so do not promise viewers a complete rewind or archive for a continuous broadcast; see YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Keep rights and monetization policy in view

  • Clear the rights to both picture and sound. YouTube’s live-stream terms require you to have the rights needed to stream and archive the content, including applicable music rights, and to comply with Community Guidelines and relevant laws.
  • A loop setting does not make content monetizable. YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025, treats repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic for monetization review. The policy applies to live streams as well as uploaded videos and emphasizes original, authentic work that offers viewers creative, educational, or other value. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
  • Do not choose HLS just because the stream is prerecorded. The basic OBS setup does not require it. YouTube supports HLS ingestion, but it has higher latency than RTMP and specific playlist, segment, and transport requirements; use it only when your encoder and workflow require it. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance and Google’s HLS ingestion guide.

Common problems and what to check

  • The loop stops at the end of the file: confirm Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a playlist, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
  • OBS cannot use the VLC source: install VLC separately and match its architecture to OBS. OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • You cannot start a first broadcast yet: check channel verification and whether a live-stream restriction falls within the preceding 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so activate it early. YouTube eligibility guidance and encoder setup cover these requirements.
  • YouTube is not receiving the OBS feed: check that the selected stream’s URL and key are entered correctly in OBS, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before starting.
  • The stream ends or disconnects: OBS looping only repeats the source; it cannot ensure a computer, power supply, or internet connection stays available. Check the local system and connection, and monitor YouTube’s preview and stream quality. A cloud service is an alternative when leaving local equipment running is impractical.
  • The archive is missing part of a long broadcast: do not rely on a complete YouTube archive once a stream exceeds 12 hours. Keep an independent local recording and plan how viewers can find earlier material.

Or let it run in the cloud
