You can stream a continuous YouTube playlist from a DigitalOcean Droplet by running an encoder on the Linux server and sending its output to YouTube Live with your stream URL and stream key. YouTube does not broadcast a playlist URL by itself: the encoder must read and send the media. This guide covers the setup, recommended ingest settings, transfer costs, long-stream tradeoffs and checks to run before leaving it unattended.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A Linux DigitalOcean Droplet with enough resources for the encoder workflow and your media. DigitalOcean and YouTube do not publish a universal minimum Droplet size for this task; test your files and settings rather than treating a particular plan as guaranteed.
- Video and audio files you have the right to stream, organized into a playlist or another encoder-readable sequence.
- An encoder that can read that media and send a live feed to YouTube. OBS is one free, open-source option listed by YouTube. FFmpeg or another encoder may suit a server workflow, but playlist syntax and restart behavior depend on your media and configuration.
- A way to keep the encoder process running and monitor it. Configure and validate supervision and recovery for your chosen encoder; there is no one universal setup established for every Droplet and playlist.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Enable live streaming for the channel and allow for the initial activation period if this is the first broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio, go to the Live Control Room, and create or schedule the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not paste it into public examples, logs or shell history; rotate it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Keep the broadcast private or unlisted while testing if you do not want test output publicly visible, then set the intended visibility before the real stream.
Follow the current connection instructions in YouTube’s encoder setup guide. The exact menu labels can change, but the essential connection details are the stream URL and key from the Live Control Room.

Prepare the playlist and encoder on the Droplet
Choose a workflow that fits the files
The encoder needs to read each item in sequence and continuously produce one live output. Confirm that your chosen software supports the playlist format and media codecs you plan to use. A workflow that passes through compatible pre-encoded media can demand less compute than one that decodes and re-encodes it, but compatibility and Droplet load must be tested with your actual files.

In the encoder, enter the YouTube ingest URL and stream key, then choose a protocol and output settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (not exceeding four seconds), and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Its current encoder settings and bitrate guidance also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio.

Pick resolution, frame rate and bitrate according to the source files, desired viewing quality and available outbound capacity. Do not upscale a low-resolution source expecting it to gain detail, and do not assume a Droplet plan can sustain a bitrate without testing.

Test before making the stream continuous
- Start a short encoder session and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
- Confirm that both audio and video are present, in sync and playing the intended playlist items.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback and adjust bitrate or output settings if it reports an issue.
- Observe the encoder and Droplet during the test for errors, resource pressure or interruptions. Validate that your process supervision behaves as expected rather than assuming it will restart the stream correctly.
Plan the session length around YouTube archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours may be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If a YouTube archive matters, end and restart sessions before the 12-hour threshold and check the channel’s archive settings. A single 24/7 session should not be relied on to produce one complete recording.

YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Estimate disk needs from the output encoding and how long you intend to retain recordings; the required space varies with those choices.

Estimate DigitalOcean transfer and server costs
DigitalOcean bills Droplet compute separately from transfer. Each plan includes some outbound transfer, pooled across Droplets at the team level; additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB, while inbound transfer to Droplets is free. Check the allowance and usage in your own account rather than assuming a fixed included amount. See DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation.
For a rough outbound estimate, use the encoder’s sustained bitrate and actual broadcast hours. Convert the resulting data volume to GiB and allow for protocol overhead; the observed billable usage will not be an exact match to a simple bitrate calculation. Monitor team-level usage and billing projections while testing.

Compute charges continue while a Droplet is powered off because its resources remain reserved; DigitalOcean says billing ends when the Droplet is destroyed. Review the current Droplet pricing and billing details for the plan and region you choose. The suitable size depends on whether the encoder re-encodes media and on the workload; there is no established universal size requirement.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive a signal: verify that live streaming is enabled, the correct stream URL and key are configured, and the encoder is running. If the channel is newly enabled, activation may still be pending.
- Stream health reports instability: check the Droplet’s outbound capacity and encoder bitrate, then test a lower setting if needed. Confirm CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and use the YouTube preview and health feedback to judge changes.
- Video works but audio is absent or wrong: verify the source file’s audio track and the encoder’s audio codec and output selection. YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs.
- The playlist stops or skips: inspect the encoder’s playlist and media compatibility settings, then test transitions with the same files outside a public broadcast. Do not assume playlist formats or restart behavior are interchangeable between encoders.
- The Droplet is under heavy load: determine whether the workflow is re-encoding; test compatible pass-through media if appropriate, or adjust the workload and server resources based on measured behavior.
- No complete archive appears: check session duration and archive settings. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be archived, and long streams can have limited or unavailable DVR.
- Transfer charges are higher than expected: compare team-level usage with broadcast hours and bitrate, account for other Droplets sharing the pool, and review the current billing page.
