To stream a 4K 60fps gaming highlights playlist on YouTube Live, play the clips through OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, then set the encoder to 2160p at 60 fps. YouTube’s current recommended H.264 video bitrate for that format is 35 Mbps; use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. Test the playlist and stream health before your scheduled start.
What you need before setting up
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the same computer. Match their architecture: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source can play multiple media items in a playlist and requires VLC. OBS Project: Media Sources
- Local video files for the highlights, arranged in the order you want them shown.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining your chosen ingest bitrate. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and checking stream health rather than relying on an assumed universal speed margin. YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Permission to broadcast every video and audio track in the playlist. Rights to game footage, music, commentary, and other included material depend on your content and licenses; no setup can grant those rights.
Prepare the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Scheduling provides an upcoming watch page that you can promote and may surface in subscribers’ feeds. YouTube: Schedule a live stream
- Set the title, description, visibility, and intended audience for the broadcast in Studio. Verify these details on the event before connecting the encoder.
- Open the encoder setup for the event and copy the server/stream URL and stream key. YouTube uses these to receive the encoder feed. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your event. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder YouTube: Manage live stream settings
Build the highlights playlist in OBS
- Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast. In the Sources dock, select + and add VLC Video.
- In the VLC Video source properties, add the highlight files in the order you want them to play. Choose whether to loop the list or shuffle it. OBS documents looping as on and shuffling as off by default; confirm the selections rather than assuming they match your intended show. OBS Project: Media Sources
- Check that the VLC source is visible in the scene and that playback continues as expected. Listen to the soundtrack in OBS’s audio mixer, check that it is not muted, and preview transitions between clips. If the playlist contains different audio levels, adjust them before going live.
- Use a representative clip with fast motion and typical audio for your test. Confirm that the footage itself is 4K and 60 fps if you intend to deliver a 4K60 input; changing OBS output settings cannot add detail or frames that are absent from the source.
Set OBS for YouTube 4K60
YouTube’s encoder guidance describes ingest settings—the feed YouTube receives from OBS. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers’ devices and network conditions, so a 4K60 input does not guarantee that every viewer will be offered or watch a 4K60 rendition. | Resolution and frame rate | 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, when supported by your source and encoder |
| H.264 video bitrate | 35 Mbps, YouTube’s current recommendation for 4K/2160p at 60 fps |
| AV1 or H.265 video bitrate | 10–40 Mbps, YouTube’s listed range for 4K/2160p at 60 fps; use only if your encoder and computer support the chosen codec |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Connection protocol | RTMPS recommended by YouTube |
In OBS, open Settings → Video to set the base and output resolution and frame rate, and Settings → Output to configure the encoder, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Under Settings → Stream, select YouTube or enter the server and stream key supplied by YouTube Studio, depending on the connection method you use. OBS labels can vary by version and selected encoder; follow the fields available for your encoder and confirm the stream URL and key belong to the intended event.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the scheduled event if possible. YouTube recommends starting it at least 15 minutes before the event so you can inspect the preview and resolve issues. YouTube: Live streaming tips
- For a low-risk check, create a private or unlisted test event. Run the actual playlist long enough to include motion-heavy gameplay and typical audio, then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
- Before the public start, verify the picture, sound, playlist order, loop behavior, resolution, frame rate, and event visibility. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages; if the feed is unstable, reduce the bitrate or troubleshoot the upload and encoder before proceeding.
- Once live, monitor OBS and YouTube Live Control Room for dropped frames, audio problems, or stream-health warnings. A computer specification alone cannot establish whether a particular playlist will encode reliably; the representative test is the practical check.
End the stream and understand the archive
Stop the broadcast from the encoder after the playlist or event is finished, and confirm the live event has ended in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream that reaches or exceeds that duration. YouTube: Archive live streams
If you want viewers sent to a Premiere or another live stream when this broadcast ends, YouTube Live Redirect has eligibility requirements: creators sending a redirect need more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. YouTube: Use Live Redirect

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video source is unavailable or blank | VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC that matches OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), restart OBS, and reopen the source properties. OBS Project: Media Sources |
| Playlist stops after one clip | Looping is disabled, or the playlist was not populated as intended. | Check the VLC Video source’s playlist entries and loop setting; test through the end of a clip before going live. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Wrong event key or server URL, or a key copied incorrectly. | Reopen the intended event’s encoder settings in YouTube Studio and copy its current stream URL and key into OBS. Treat the key as private. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder |
| Stream health warns of instability or buffering | The upload connection or encoder is not sustaining the selected settings. | Check YouTube’s health messages, verify the configured bitrate and CBR settings, and run another test. Lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it; YouTube does not specify one upload-headroom multiplier for every setup. YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions YouTube: Live streaming tips |
| Picture is not 4K60 or viewers see a lower rendition | The source may not be 4K60, the encoder output may differ, or YouTube may deliver another transcoded format for a viewer’s device or connection. | Check source properties and OBS output settings, then inspect the test stream. YouTube’s multi-format transcoding means the ingest format is not a promise that every viewer receives 4K60. YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions |
| Audio is silent or clipped | The source track may be muted, routed incorrectly, or too loud. | Check the OBS mixer and listen to a test broadcast; adjust levels and verify soundtrack playback before the event. |
